Chapter 46(Roman My Enemy)
Chapter 46(Roman My Enemy)
Stephen's pov
“Beta Stephen,” a guard called from the door. “You have a message.”
My eyes narrowed, “Who could be sending me a message this late. “Come in,” I ordered.
He came in, bowed and handed me a letter.
I took it from him, “Who sent it this?”
“A guard from the elders quarters.” He replied.
I nodded my head and dismissed him, while I opened the letter. It was a short note that said: The elders wish to see you tonight.
I frowned when I read it. The elders do not often agree on things, but for them to come together and summon me, that means this is serious.
I paced my room, with my index finger tapping my lips, but why call me in secret? What exactly is the issue? My first thought went to Roman. Has he finally lost his mind? Do they want him gone?
I picked up my coat, put it on, and walked out of my chambers to the location in the letter. The air outside was so heavy, I looked at the sky, cleared my throat and walked into the tiny room.
My eyes scanned everywhere, I wondered how long they had been meeting here secretly.
The elders sat in a circle, and they all looked at me as I walked in. Their eyes were sharp, and cold. Elder Miri stood, “Welcome Beta Stephen.” She greeted me.
I cleared my throat, “Elder Miri…why have I been summoned here?” I asked.
“Stephen,” she continued, “ I know you have heard about the mass arrest going on in the pack.”
I swallowed hard, “Yes I have.”
“And you see nothing wrong with it?” She asked
“It's the Alpha’s order, and he has a reason for everything he does.”
“What could be the reason for such a cruel act…nothing justifies this,” Elder Bako snapped.
My eyes moved from one elder to the next, marking the faces present. Elder Marcus wasn't here. Of course he wouldn't be here, I whispered to myself. He’s never involved in things like this.
“You still haven't told me why I'm here,” I said, taking a seat.
Elder Miri leaned forward. “We need you, Stephen. Roman is tearing this pack apart. And if we don't do something really fast, we won't have a pack left. Everybody is afraid for their lives.”
My eyes narrowed as I placed my elbow on the table. “You need me for what?”
“We need you to contest for the title, to take it over from Roman.”
Her words hit me hard, and my eyes widened in surprise. “What?” I shouted, slamming my fist on the table. The wood rang, and the room shook a little. My voice filled the chamber. “You want me to go against my own brother? To betray him!” How dare you.” I roared.
Some elders jumped back in fear. Good. Let them be afraid. I cannot act like I'm interested in this discussion. One thing I have learnt over the years is that Roman has spies everywhere. I'm sure one of these elders seated here is his spy, and I cannot implicate myself.
But now that I know the elders are going to back me up, I just need to secretly pick out the ones I can work with. But for now in this meeting. I have to act like the most loyal and supportive brother.
I glared at them hard. My words were hard and filled with power “Never.” I screamed. “Never bring this up again. Do you hear me? Roman is Alpha. I will not hear talk like this ever again, else….” I stood up, my eyes piercing into theirs one after another.
They nodded fast, and mumbled sorry. I turned and walked out, slamming the door behind me. My boots sounded loud on the floor as I went out.
As I stepped out, my lips curled into a faint smile. Finally, everyone is now looking up to me. The next step is to marry Elena. That will give me more respect and power to move.
I clenched my jaw, and tightened my fist. Soon, brother. Soon… it will all be mine.
Later that day I decided to go see Elder Marcus for an answer regarding Elena. His room smells of old books and incense. My eyes scanned the room as I waited for him patiently.
“Stephen,” he greeted me as he walked in.
“Good evening Elder Marcus,” I greeted back.
“How have you been?” He asked as he sat down opposite me.
My lips curled into a smile, “I have been good.” I responded.
“Elder Marcus,” I said, “I came regarding what we discussed last time. You know about marrying Elena.”
Marcus watched me. He did not move much. Then he shook his head.
“I’m sorry Stephen, but she refused. She says her heart belongs to someone else. And you know I can't force her, so it's a no from us. We are really sorry.”
His words stung me really bad. My face went hard. “Someone else? Who?” I asked.
He met my eyes steady. He did not flinch. “I don't know, she wouldn't say.”
Deep down in my heart, I knew it was Roman, it has always been Roman. That irritating pest, that takes everything from me.
I stood up slowly, and I kept my face calm, but inside my blood boiled. “Very well,” I said quietly. “If that’s the case, it's fine…you can't force love.”
“Thank you for understanding,” Marcus said, standing up, and walking me to the door. “I'm very positive you would find someone really good.”
I forced a smile, nodded and walked out, with a very heavy heart.
As I stood outside, I turned one last time and looked at Elder Marcus's house. “I promise you, I will marry that daughter of yours…infact she will beg me to marry her…it's a promise.” I whispered to myself as I continued walking.
And as for Roman, I will make him shed tears of blood…he thinks he is all that, I will show him that he's just a pathetic, spineless tormentated alcoholic.
This is no longer only about power, this is now personal. This is vengeance for everything he took away from me. I will make sure
he begs me for mercy. Everyone who has ever looked down on me…I will show them who I truly am.
