Chapter 45(The Alpha Has Gone Mad)
Chapter 45(The Alpha Has Gone Mad)
Roman’s POV
I closed my eyes, but sleep wouldn't just come. I kept turning and tossing, gripping my sheets for some sort of control, but no matter how tight I held it, it still couldn't calm my nerves. My mind kept replaying the letter sent by the lone wolf.
I got up from my bed, pacing the room…who the hell could this be. I shook my head violently. And whoever it is, had the mind to threaten me directly…Hahaha ... .These people must think I scare easily.
I turned to the table, picked up the cup of wine, and gulped down my throat. How dare them…Me Roman, this is war, and I must win. When I catch this person, he/she would wish they didn't take this path.
I walked back to the bed, and lay down, staring at the ceiling and visualizing how I would tear whoever this is into two. When I eventually managed to close my eyes, It was from one nightmare to the other. I saw a wolf running after me. Its teeth shone in the dark, and its eyes burned red. It chased me through the trees really fast. I tried running, but fell, and the wolf came closer to me with a silver knife. It raised it high to pierce me, but I woke up with a shout, panting really hard.
I sat up right on my bed in the dark, my heart pounding so hard in my chest. I poured another drink. My hands shook, as I poured it, causing the cup to spill. “Damn it,” I muttered. My voice sounded weak…Gosh I hate this feeling. I'm not supposed to be afraid, I'm not supposed to be weak, I am Roman…the strongest of them all, nobody comes close.
By morning, my head hurt so bad, but my mind was active, I knew exactly what I needed to do.
“Joshua”. I called, and he came fast, bowing. His eyes stayed on me.
“Alpha?” He greeted me.
I rose to my feet, my hands pressed hard on the table. “Joshua, go into town….Arrest anyone who looks suspicious. Anyone who looks like they might be hiding something. Bring them here.”
He blinked, his mouth opened. “Alpha… everyone?”
“Yes. Everyone.” My voice was hard.
He looked uneasy. “This will cause fear.”
My eyes opened wide in anger, “How dare you…how dare you question my order.”
“I'm sorry Alpha,” Joshua apologized. “I only said it because, the …”
“I do not care,” I snapped, cutting him off. The words cut the air. “I must know who is behind this. I must find the truth… Nobody makes a fool out of me.” I stood up pacing the room, my hand pulling my hair hard. “The lone wolf is not a ghost, it's someone in this pack…and I…must find whoever this is.”
Joshua bowed, but his eyes still questioned me. That made my blood burn.
“Listen to me,” I said, lower now. “Watch the Elders also. All of them. It could be any of them. Marcus. Even Stephen. Do you understand me?”
Joshua paused, and my fists clenched. “Do you hear me, Joshua?”
At last, he bowed deep. “I hear you, Alpha. It will be done.”
He left the room immediately , and the door shut. The silence came back, heavy and cold this time around. I walked to the empty chair in front of me, and sat down. My hands rubbed over my face, and my head bang with a crazy headache
Maybe I was going too far with my decision, but I didn't care. Nobody threatens me in my own pack.
I stood and walked to the window. The sun rose slowly, and I could see some pack members moving below in small shadows in the light. They were carrying food ... .talking and laughing.
Any one of them could be the Lone Wolf. Any one of them could be the hand waiting to strike.
I touched the glass, and my breath fogged it. My voice was low, and broken. “I will find you,” I whispered. “Before you find me.”
My hand curled tight into a fist. My chest burned with anger, and maybe fear. But no matter how shaken I was, I would not rest until the Lone Wolf was mine.
Elder Miri’s pov
The room was dark, only a single lamp burned, and the air smelled of old wood and smoke. The elders sat in a circle, their faces hard, and their voices low.
I looked at them. Their eyes were filled with fear mixed with anger.
“It is enough,” Elder Bako said, his voice rough. “Roman is arresting people at random. Isn't that madness?”
Elder Venn nodded. “That man has gone crazy…maybe his drinking has taken another level. What exactly is he even looking for, why the mass arrest?
My chest was tight, but I forced my voice steady. “He is no longer fit to lead. If this continues, the pack will turn against us all.”
Elder Othar leaned forward, his hands on his knees. His eyes glowed in the dim light. “Then what do you suggest? You know Roman won't give up his title without a fight. And Stephen has shown no interest in the title either.”
I swallowed, my mouth dry. “We must invite Stephen. Speak with him in private….convince him. He still has power, and he is ambitious. The pack listens to him. If anyone can move against Roman, it is him.”
The room grew quiet, everyone thinking about the suggestions.
Elder Lucas shook his head. “That will bring war. And you know we aren't built for war. Remember Roman is very strong with lots of connections. What if Stephen rejects the idea, and even tells Roman we are plotting against him…you know they are very close.”
“Better war than madness,” I said sharply. My voice cut through the silence. “At this point, I don't care, let us try first. If we close our mouths, one day Roman will kill us. It's better we die fighting. Look around you. Roman’s mind breaks more each day.”
Elder Othar’s lips twisted. He looked at me long, then spoke. “Even if we turn to Stephen, it may not be enough. Do not forget…the Luna is with child. If she bears a son, everything changes, Roman becomes really untouchable.”
His words hit me hard. For a moment, the room was heavy with silence.
I leaned in. “Then we must act fast, at least before she gives birth. Before the child is born. If not, we will never be free of Roman’s bloodline. We will never take back control.”
Some of the elders shifted in their seats. Elder Bako 's hands trembled. Elder Venn stared at the floor, and no one spoke.
I let my voice drop to a whisper. “Think of the pack. Think of our people. If Roman falls deeper into madness, he will destroy us all. We must choose. Delay no longer, and call Stephen.”
Their eyes moved from one person to another, I could see fear, and hunger in their faces.
No matter what it took, something must be done, Roman must step down.
