Chapter 37(The Strange Figure)

Chapter 37(The Strange Figure)
Kaelenya's pov

The room was quiet when I came back, but my mind would not rest. I sat on the edge of the bed and the woman’s words played again and again in my head. Be careful… they are coming for you. Her voice stuck to me like a shadow that would not let go. Who was she? How did she move so fast? One second her fingers were on my arm and the next she was gone like smoke in the air. No scent left behind, and not even a sound. Wolves should not move that quick without someone seeing, but she was just gone and it made no sense. Was she even a wolf, or something else.

I pressed my hand to my stomach and felt the faint warmth under my skin. Maybe she mistook me for someone else. But even if it was actually me, who would want to harm someone as insignificant as me... Someone like me, with nothing to offer.

The door creaked and the guard’s voice broke the quiet. “Luna,” he said, stiff and careful. “The Alpha is here.”

I stood up very fast and smoothed the folds of my dress even though it did not need it. My heart skipped a beat. Roman never came into my room, without a reason. When the door opened his presence filled the room as usual. He stepped inside tall and his sharp eyes looked at every corner before they stopped on me

“How was your outing?” His voice was deep and steady.

Typical Roman. He only showed the smallest flick of care when he remembered that I carried his child. I forced a small smile even though my chest still raced. “It was… good,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm

“Good,” he replied. It was just one word but it carried a command and a warning all at once. His eyes dropped for a heartbeat to my stomach and then back to my face. “Make sure this one stays.”

Before I could say a single thing he turned and left. The door closed with a heavy sound that felt like a final order. I just stood there, staring at the closed. Did I purposely terminate the first one? Is the life of the child in my hands, I'm I a witch who eats her children?...Why would he make such comment. I collapsed on the bed, and closed my eyes, trying to calm my nerves and get some peace.

Night came really quick, but I couldn't sleep. When I finally did it wasn't peaceful. It was from one nightmare to the next. I turned and tossed, gripping my sheets really tight. It was like someone was behind me. I could hear soft footsteps at first then louder then closer. I ran really fast, when I gathered the courage to turn my head, the figure had no face, it was just…darkness.

I woke with a sharp cry and sat up quickly. My breath broke into small gasps. Sweat stuck to my skin though the night air was cool. My heart beat so hard it made my ribs ache. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and pressed my feet to the floor trying to steady myself. The room felt smaller than before, and the walls leaned in like they wanted to swallow me.

What kind of dream is this, I whispered to myself, while trying to catch my breath. I needed something to calm me down. I flung the blanket off my legs, and slowly crossed to the window hoping the moonlight might calm the storm inside me

As I pulled the curtain, the night outside was still and the courtyard lay quiet under a silver sky. Everywhere was so peaceful, my eyes moved from one building to the next, as I tried to slow my breath. Suddenly, something caught my eyes and I stopped.

There was a figure standing at the far edge of the garden. Half hidden in the deep shadows. It wasn't a guard I could tell. It stared straight into my eyes. My eyes widened in shock, and I could feel my heart pounding. I couldn't get the exact face of the person, all I knew was that it was dressed in black.

A chill ran down my back and slid into my bones. I blinked twice, and the figure did not move. It just…watched me. My hands pressed against the window frame but I could not pull my eyes away. The night felt thick and slow like the air itself was holding its breath. My mouth opened, I wanted to scream, to call the guard positioned at the door, but I couldn't…it was like my throat was locked. The figure stayed there quiet and patient like it had all the time in the world, then it's lips curved into a smile, and then it disappeared…. vanished, just like that. I quickly closed the curtain and turned back to my bed.

My hands were trembling, my palms wet and sweaty, I managed to sit down on the bed and immediately, held my stomach with both hands. I whispered without thinking. “Please be safe.” My voice sounded small and broken in the quiet room. Suddenly, the warning of the woman in the market, echoed again in my head. Be careful… they are coming for you. I hugged my arms around my belly and rocked a little as if the motion could build a wall around us.

Something wasn't right, in one day I have had three nerve wrecking experience. What exactly is all this. I took a deep breath, and curled myself in the blanket.

The night stretched on and the moon slid across the sky. I kept praying for morning to come, but it wasn't forth coming. Who do I even tell I saw a figure outside my window. Is it Janet, what can she do? Roman on the other hand won't even take me serious at all, or should I tell him?...No, I shook my head, I doubt he would want to hear about anything that concerns me. Would he even believe me?
