Chapter 29 (The Visitor)
Chapter 29 (The Visitor)
Kaelenya’s pov
The night felt long and heavy, filled with loneliness. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the small light that flickered in the corner of my room. My thoughts drifted where they always went when the world around me grew too quiet…back to the life I once dreamed of.
I used to picture something so simple. A gentle life. I wanted to marry the man I loved, not a stranger chosen by tradition. We would have three children…two boys and a girl. I even had their names planned, whispered only to myself. I would work in the pack library, surrounded by books, with the smell of paper and ink soft around me. I would help young wolves find stories that gave them hope.
Now those dreams felt like fragile glass, broken and scattered. My life belonged to the Alpha, to rules I did not make.
A sudden knock pulled me out of my thoughts. I blinked and turned toward the door, staring as Janet walked in with her hands casually tucked in her apron.
“Luna?” She greeted and bowed. “You have a visitor.”
“A visitor?” I frowned. “Isn’t it too late for a visitor?”
“She says it’s important,” Janet answered softly.
My eyes rolled as I wondered who it could be and what could be so important to drag someone out by this time. “Who is that?” I asked.
“Miss Elena,” She replied.
“Elena!” My eyes moved from one corner to the next, “Who is that?”
“Lady Margaret’s daughter.”
“She has a daughter?... and why would her daughter be looking for me?”
Janet didn't say a word, she just stood there, smiling as usual.
I hesitated. It was late, and I wasn't in the mood to smile and act happy to anyone. Still, a small spark of curiosity stirred inside me. “Let her in,” I finally said.
The door opened with a quiet creak. Janet stepped aside, and a young woman in her late twenties entered, carrying a small bag.
For a moment I couldn’t place her face, though it tugged at a corner of my memory. Beautiful hair, calm eyes, a gentle grace in the way she moved. Then it clicked.
“I remember you,” I said, leaning forward. “Where have I… ah, yes. Alpha Noah’s party. You were there, weren’t you?”
The girl smiled and nodded. “Yes, I was. My name is Elena.”
The girl Roman was lost staring at, at the party.
“Elena,” I repeated softly. “Of course. What brings you here?”
She lifted the bag in her hands. “My mother, Lady Margaret, asked me to bring you these. She just returned from a trip and thought you might like them.”
A small warmth spread in my chest. I wasn’t used to receiving gifts. “That’s very kind of her,” I said, accepting the bag. The fabric felt soft and smelled faintly of lavender. “Please thank her for me.”
“I will,” Elena said with a gentle smile. She glanced around the room, then back at me. “May I sit?”
“Of course,” I said, motioning to the chair near the small table. “It’s nice to have company.”
She sat gracefully, folding her hands in her lap. For a moment we simply looked at each other, the quiet between us oddly comforting.
Then she turned to me and cleared her throat, “I hope you don't mind if I ask a question?”
“Of course not,” I replied smiling.
“Do you ever feel lonely,” Elena asked softly, “being here so much? You rarely step outside?”
The question surprised me, though her voice held no judgment…only concern. “Sometimes,” I admitted after a pause. “At first, it was a little different from what I'm used to, but lately… I think I’ve grown used to it.”
“That sounds nice,” she said. Her eyes were steady, kind. “But I think you should be coming out more often, at least to see your pack members and admire how beautiful the pack is.”
A small smile escaped my lips. “I will try to start doing that.”
“I heard you aren't from this pack?” She asked
The question sent a pang through me. I looked at her for a second, wondering if these were innocent questions or something more “No I'm not.”
Elena watched me quietly, her face unreadable. “So what attracted you to our pack?.”
This girl is obviously here to interrogate me, why the interest in my life. What exactly is she trying to do.
I met her eyes, surprised by her question . “Alpha Roman.”
She gave a small smile. “Oh….nice”
The room became quiet, but the discussion quickly picked up again. For a while we spoke of smaller things…books we loved, the changing weather, the sound of the wolves that sometimes howled beyond the walls. Her voice carried a softness that eased the tightness in my chest. It felt strange to share pieces of myself with someone I barely knew, but also safe in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time.
After a pause, I tilted my head, curiosity breaking through. “You and the Alpha,” I said carefully. “You guys seemed really… close the other night at the party?”
Her eyes lowered for a second, the smallest shadow crossing her face. Then she looked back at me and gave a quiet nod. “We used to be,” she said simply.
Something in the way she said it…soft, like they had something so deep, it lingered in the air between us.
I held her gaze for a heartbeat, trying to read the meaning behind her words. But shedidn't say anymore words, she just stared at the open space…lost in thoughts.
As the silence settled, my thoughts turned inward again. There is obviously a deep story between the both of them. And seeing her reaction now and Roman’s face at the party when he saw her, it isn't a closed chapter, there is still something waiting patiently to resurface. And her coming here today wasn't just to see me.
I forced a small smile, as I stared at her. What is your agenda, why are you here, I thought to myself. Why this niceness. People are never nice to me, and definitely not someone as pretty and well exposed as this.
