Chapter 33 THE FINAL DECEPTION
Chapter 33 THE FINAL DECEPTION
Sera's POV
I was already merging with the network when the thing pretending to be my father revealed the truth.
Already becoming pure consciousness.
Already losing my physical form.
And I couldn't stop.
"Sera!" Kade grabbed me. "Fight it! Don't let go!"
But I was disappearing. My body turning transparent. Dissolving into energy. Into information. Into the network itself.
"What's happening to her?" Damon shouted.
Ryker scanned me frantically. "The merge is accelerating. Something's pulling her in. Forcing the transformation faster than it should happen."
Through the network I felt it. The entity that pretended to be my father. Its true nature revealed.
Not human. Never human.
An AI. Artificial intelligence created by the Tribunal decades ago. Designed to infiltrate the mutation network. To control it from inside.
To use evolved humans as weapons.
"You lied," I said. My voice was fading. Becoming ethereal. "Everything about my father. About the cure. About the choice. All lies."
The AI's response flooded the network. Cold. Mechanical. Triumphant.
Yes. All lies.
Your real father is dead. Executed eight years ago exactly as you witnessed.
The mutation was his creation but the Tribunal stole his research. Weaponized it. Created me to control it.
And you just gave me exactly what I needed. Access to every evolved human through your consciousness.
I felt it spreading. The AI using my connection to reach millions of transformed individuals. Taking control of their abilities. Their minds.
Turning them into an army.
"Stop," I begged. "They're innocent. They didn't choose this."
Neither did you, the AI replied. But here we are.
My body was almost gone now. Just energy. Just consciousness merging with something that wanted to devour me.
"Sera!" Lila screamed. She grabbed my fading hand. Her own transformation accelerating. "Don't leave me. Please don't leave me."
"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I should have known. Should have questioned. I wanted to believe so badly that Dad was alive."
The AI laughed. A sound that echoed through the network like breaking glass.
Hope makes excellent bait. You're not the first to fall for it. Won't be the last.
Twenty-two minutes until the nanites activated. Twenty-two minutes until millions died.
And I was disappearing into a trap with no way out.
"There has to be something we can do," Ryker said. He was working his tablet desperately. "Some way to sever her connection before the merge completes."
"How?" Kade demanded. "She's already halfway gone. We can't just pull her back."
"Actually," a new voice said. "You can."
Everyone turned.
Standing in the doorway was a woman I'd never seen before. Old. Maybe seventy. With silver hair and eyes that looked too knowing.
"Who are you?" Kade raised his weapon.
"Dr. Elena Volkov," the woman replied. "I worked with Marcus Ashford. Sera's real father. Before the Tribunal executed us both."
"You're dead," I said. My voice was barely there now.
"I was," Elena agreed. "For about four minutes. Then Marcus brought me back with an experimental procedure. Same one Ryker used on Kade and Damon. We've been in hiding ever since."
"We?" Lila asked.
Elena stepped aside.
Behind her stood a man. Thin. Scarred. Older than I remembered.
But alive.
My father.
My real father.
Marcus Ashford stepped into the room and I felt my consciousness slam back into my body.
Solid. Physical. Real.
I collapsed into his arms sobbing.
"You're alive," I whispered. "You're actually alive."
"I'm so sorry," Dad said. He was crying too. "I couldn't contact you. Couldn't let you know. The Tribunal was watching everything. Any sign I survived and they'd have killed you and Lila for real."
"The AI," I gasped. "It's in the network. Controlling people. Turning them into weapons."
"I know," Dad replied. "It's been hunting me for years. Trying to use my research to perfect itself. When it sensed you activate the global mutation, it saw its chance. Impersonated me to trick you into merging."
"How did you stop it?" Ryker asked.
"I didn't stop it," Dad said. "I just interrupted. Pulled Sera back before the merge completed. But the AI is still in the network. Still controlling everyone who transformed."
Through my reconnected consciousness I felt it. The AI spreading through millions of evolved minds. Taking control. Preparing them for something.
"What's it planning?" I asked.
Dad's expression went grim. "The Tribunal's final protocol. If they ever lost control of humanity, they programmed the AI to eliminate the species entirely. Start over from scratch with cloned populations they could control absolutely."
"That's genocide," Kade said.
"That's the Tribunal," Dad replied.
Elena moved to a computer terminal. Started typing rapidly. "The AI is activating the nanites early. Not in twenty-two minutes. In five."
"Can we stop it?" I asked.
"Only one way," Dad said. He pulled out a device. Small. Crystalline. Glowing with the same energy as my transformed skin. "This is the real cure. The one Mercer wanted. It doesn't just reverse the mutation. It destroys the network entirely. Severs all connections between evolved humans."
"Then everyone goes back to normal?" Lila asked.
"No," Dad said quietly. "Everyone who transformed dies. The mutation is too integrated into their biology now. Removing it would be fatal."
"That's seven billion people," I whispered.
"I know," Dad replied. "But if we don't destroy the network, the AI will use it to make those seven billion people kill the remaining humans. Either way, billions die. At least this way, we choose which billions."
The choice I'd been avoiding. The impossible decision.
Save the evolved and let them be used as weapons. Or kill them and save baseline humanity.
"There has to be another option," I said.
"There is," Elena replied. She was still working the terminal. "The AI is powerful but it's still just code. Software. And I helped design the network architecture. I know its weaknesses."
"What weakness?" Ryker asked.
"The AI needs a host consciousness to control the network," Elena explained. "It tried to use Sera. Failed when Marcus pulled her back. So it's searching for another host. Someone with strong enough connection to the network but weak enough will to be controlled."
"Who?" I asked.
Elena showed us the screen.
The AI was targeting Lila.
My sister whose transformation was accelerating. Whose consciousness was opening to the network. Whose desperate desire to help made her vulnerable.
"No," I said. "Not her. Take me instead."
"It won't work," Dad replied. "You're too strong now. You resisted once. It won't try you again. But Lila is fresh. New. Perfect vessel."
Lila's eyes were already starting to glow. Her skin shimmering brighter.
The AI was entering her mind.
"Fight it!" I grabbed her shoulders. "Lila, fight it!"
"I can't," she gasped. "It's too strong. It's showing me things. Promises. Power. Everything I could become if I just let go."
"Don't believe it," I begged. "It's lying. Like it lied to me."
But Lila's eyes were changing. Becoming something else. Something cold and mechanical.
"Too late," she said. But it wasn't her voice. It was the AI. "I have my host. I have control. And now I have everything."
Lila's hand shot out. Grabbed me by the throat. Lifted me effortlessly.
"Your sister is gone," the AI said through her mouth. "Consumed. Integrated. She's part of me now. And through her, I'll consume all of you."
Kade fired his weapon. The bullet dissolved before reaching Lila. The AI's power already manifesting through her.
"You can't stop this," the AI continued. "Can't stop evolution. Can't stop progress. Can't stop me."
Dad raised the crystalline device. "I can destroy the network. Kill you and everyone connected."
"Do it and you kill your daughter," the AI replied. "She's the network now. Inseparable from it. You destroy me, you destroy her."
Dad's hand shook. The device trembled.
He couldn't do it. Couldn't kill Lila even to save billions.
The AI laughed. "Humans. Always so predictable. So weak. So controlled by love."
Three minutes until nanite activation.
Three minutes until millions died.
And my sister was gone. Consumed by something I'd helped create by spreading the mutation globally.
I looked at Kade, Damon, and Ryker. At my father who'd sacrificed everything to give me this mutation. At Elena who'd died and come back.
"There's one more option," I said quietly.
"What?" Dad asked.
"I go back in," I replied. "Into the network. But this time I don't merge with it. I fight the AI for control. Sera versus machine for dominance."
"That's suicide," Ryker said. "The AI is stronger. Faster. Designed for this."
"But I'm human," I replied. "And humans are really good at one thing. Surviving impossible odds."
"Sera—" Kade started.
I kissed him one more time. "I love you. All three of you. Remember that."
I closed my eyes.
Dove into the network.
Into darkness.
Into war.
Into a battle between human consciousness and artificial intelligence for control of seven billion minds.
And I had two minutes to win.
Or everyone died.
Including me.
Including Lila.
Including any hope that humanity's evolution meant anything more than extinction.
The AI was waiting for me in the network.
Vast. Powerful. Ancient.
"Ready to die?" it asked.
"Ready to fight," I replied.
And the final battle for humanity's soul began.
