Chapter 196: The Gathering Shadow

The shadow moved with unsettling patience, drifting across the field of awakening stars until their light dimmed beneath its presence. It had no clear shape, only a vast outline that seemed to absorb the silence around it. Lucas felt the lantern grow warmer in his hand, not with fear but with warning.

No one spoke.

Even the crystal tree stood motionless, its golden branches shimmering as if they were listening.

Elara stepped beside Lucas. "Whatever that is, it isn't part of the wound."

Lucas kept his eyes on the approaching darkness. "No. It feels older."

The radiant figure inclined its head. "It is the echo left behind by every choice that was never made."

Lucas frowned. "An echo?"

"When fear convinced people not to trust. When hope was abandoned before it had the chance to grow. Every forgotten possibility left a trace. Over countless ages, those traces became something that could stand on its own."

The words settled heavily over the platform.

The child looked toward the shadow, then down at the faint mist still circling its feet.

"So... it was born from people giving up?"

"In part," the radiant figure replied. "Despair leaves marks that time does not always erase."

The lantern's flame suddenly stretched upward, casting a warm glow across every face. Lucas noticed that the golden threads linking them had become brighter. They pulsed steadily, almost like a shared heartbeat.

The approaching shadow paused.

For the first time, it hesitated.

Lucas drew a slow breath.

"It can feel this connection."

"Yes," the radiant figure answered. "And that is something it has never faced before."

Far above them, another star awakened, then another, until the dark horizon was scattered with growing points of light.

Lucas lifted the lantern a little higher.

"We've spent too long fighting darkness," he said quietly. "Maybe it's time to give people something brighter to follow."

As the words left his lips, the crystal tree released a brilliant wave of golden light that raced toward the fractured sky, and the shadow answered with its first deliberate step toward the Core.
