Chapter 25 Message from Allies

Chapter 25 Message from Allies
Kian's POV

“Three packs are wavering. The Council is making offers they can't refuse.” I read the letter that arrived sealed with a personal sigil of an ally pack. I opened it in my study, alone, and read the words that confirmed my worst fears.

I called an immediate council meeting with key figures who were present at the castle. Alexander arrived first, his expression grim.

"How bad is this?" I asked.

"Very bad," Alexander said, not bothering with pleasantries. "The Council has sent representatives to every pack that's part of our alliance. They're offering territorial deals, trade agreements, magical support. Things that the packs have been asking for since this all started."

"What do they want in return?"

"Neutrality, primarily," Alexander said. "They're telling the packs that if they withdraw from the alliance, the Council will leave them alone. They won't be attacked. They won't be pressured. They'll be allowed to go about their business undisturbed."

"And if they refuse the offer?"

Alexander's jaw tightened. "Then the Council has implied that those packs will be considered enemies of the Council. And the Council is making it clear that they have the military capability to enforce it"

I felt the weight of that threat settle over me like a shroud. The Council wasn't just fighting me and Lana. They were fighting the idea of the alliance itself. They were using fear and incentive to scatter the very structure that made us strong.

"Which three packs are wavering?" I asked.

"Crimson Ridge, Storm's Edge, and North Mountain," Alexander said. "Crimson Ridge's alpha is afraid that staying with us will get his warriors killed for a cause that isn't his. Storm's Edge's alpha is sick. The healers are saying he has less than a year to live. The Council offered him extended life and better healers in exchange for withdrawing. North Mountain's territory has been suffering from drought. The Council offered to break the drought in exchange for neutrality."

All three were tempting offers. All three played on legitimate pack concerns. And all three represented strategic losses that we could not afford.

"We need to make counter-offers," I said, standing and beginning to pace. "What do we have that the Council doesn't?"

"Trust," Sera said from the doorway, where she'd apparently been waiting. "We have trust. The Council's offering material things, but we're offering something deeper. We're offering partnership instead of indirect slavery"

"That's not going to help Storm's Edge's alpha live longer," Alexander said flatly. "That's not going to break a drought in North Mountain's territory. The Council is offering concrete solutions to real problems."

"Then we find concrete solutions," I said. "Alexander, send word to our healers. I want everything we have on life extension therapy sent to Storm's Edge's alpha. Tell him it's a gift from allies, not payment. Tell him that we stand together because we choose to, not because we have to."

"And the drought?" Alexander asked.

I paused, thinking. "That's harder. Environmental magic isn't my specialty. But Nyx…"

"I can handle that."

I turned to find Nyx standing in the shadows of my study, her violet eyes glowing softly. I hadn't heard her arrive, which meant she'd been listening for some time.

"I can break the drought in North Mountain's territory," Nyx continued. "It will take time and energy, but it's possible. Tell the alpha that I will personally ensure that his territory receives rain within the next moon cycle."

"The Council won't be able to match that," Alexander said slowly. "They don't have access to ancient beings. They can't do what you can."

"Exactly," Nyx said. "Let them know that the Eclipse Wolf's allies have access to power that predates their entire civilization. Let them understand that choosing to stand with you comes with advantages they cannot find elsewhere."

It was good strategy. It was also probably necessary. But I could feel the pressure mounting, the weight of keeping the alliance together while the Council worked to tear it apart.

That's when Sera took a deep breath. "There's something else you need to know," she said, and her voice was very small. "Something I found out this morning."

We all turned to look at her.

"My family pack is considering the Council's offer," she said quietly. "My estranged mother sent me a letter. She's asking me to come home, to tell them what I know about the Eclipse Wolf's capabilities so they can negotiate better terms with the Council."

The words hung in the air like a weapon.

"What did you tell her?" I asked carefully.

"That I was not going to consider it," Sera said, and I could see the firmness in her eyes. "You gave me a new family after I was considered broken by my family. Meeting Lana, seeing what the Council was willing to do to suppress her won't make me change my decision, but I still wouldn't wish for my family's destruction”

"What do you need?" I asked.

Sera considered the question carefully. "I need to know that standing with you is worth what I'm sacrificing. I need to know that when this is over, if we win, that there will still be a place for me here. That I won't be cast aside as no longer useful and that my family will be safe"

"There will always be a place for you here, There always have been." I said, and I meant every word. "You've proven yourself. You've earned trust. That doesn't disappear just because your loyalty is tested."

"Convince me," she said. "Not just with words. Show me what we're fighting for beyond survival and revenge."

I looked at Sera, then at Nyx, then back at Sera.

"You have my words," I said.
