Chapter 80

Chapter 80
Eloise's POV

These three women were important parts of the capital's social network. Getting them to like me had taken years of careful work, strategic favors, and perfectly timed sharing of useful gossip. Now they were my allies and, more importantly, my sources of information.

I put on my warm welcome face and walked to the drawing room.

"Ladies!" I said as I entered. "So wonderful to see you all."

"Eloise, darling," Mrs. Pemberton stood up to hug me. "You look absolutely gorgeous today."

"You're so sweet," I replied graciously. "Please, sit. I had Margaret get some special pastries from that new French baker."

For the next two hours, we did the delicate dance of high-society conversation. Every comment had hidden meanings, every story was carefully chosen to share specific information. I learned about Lord Pemberton's money troubles, Lady Hawthorne's daughter's inappropriate boyfriend, and Mrs. Blackwell's husband's political plans.

More importantly, I shared strategic details about my upcoming charity gala, subtly emphasizing the quality of guests who would attend. By the time they left, all three women were even more eager to be connected to my social events.

"You've really outdone yourself this time," Lady Hawthorne said as they got ready to leave. "The Stewart family is so lucky to have you."

"How sweet of you to say," I murmured, but inside I was triumphant. My reputation was getting stronger every day. Soon, no social event in the capital would be complete without me being involved.

After I saw them out, I went back to my sitting room feeling deeply satisfied. The morning's work had been highly productive. Information gathered, relationships strengthened, influence expanded.

Lunch was quiet with just me and Saskia. This girl had been unusually withdrawn lately, but I figured it was just normal teenage moodiness. She'd always been the easiest of Juan's kids to handle - quiet, obedient, never questioning me.

"You seem thoughtful today," I said, cutting my poached salmon into precise pieces. "Is something bothering you?"

Saskia looked up briefly, her dark eyes unreadable. "Just thinking about some things."

"What kind of things? Maybe I can help."

"Old memories, mostly," she said quietly. "Things from when I was younger."

A small warning bell went off in my head, but I kept my voice gentle. "Childhood memories can be confusing sometimes. Our minds don't always remember things clearly, especially from when we were very young."

Saskia nodded but didn't say anything else. I decided not to push it. The girl had been scared into silence for ten years - a few vague thoughts about the past weren't going to suddenly make her brave.

The afternoon was all about final preparations for the charity gala. I met with the head chef to approve the menu, reviewed the flower arrangements with the decorator, and confirmed the music program with the orchestra leader. Every detail had to be perfect.

At four o'clock, I heard a carriage outside and looked out to see Sophia coming back from one of her mysterious trips. She'd been going out a lot lately, saying she wanted to "explore the city" and "make new friends." I wasn't worried - what kind of useful connections could a country girl possibly make?

As evening came, the family gathered for dinner. This daily ritual was another performance for me, keeping up the fake harmony that kept our household stable. Not for emotional reasons, but for practical ones. A peaceful family environment helped my long-term plans.

"How was everyone's day?" Juan asked in his usual way.

"Very productive," I replied, then told him about my social meetings and event preparations. I made sure to emphasize how my efforts made the whole Stewart family look good.

"The Duchess's attendance alone will get us significant positive attention," I concluded. "People will remember this event for years."

"Your social skills continue to be one of our family's greatest strengths," Juan acknowledged.

Again, that word - strengths. Not love, not affection, but value. That was the foundation of our whole relationship, and it was perfect for me.

After dinner, Juan and I went to his study to discuss household finances and future social obligations. These conversations were where I proved my worth most clearly, offering insights into which events to attend, which families to cultivate, which social investments would pay off best.

"The Ashford wedding next month will be important," I noted, looking at my social calendar. "Three other big families will be there - perfect opportunity to strengthen multiple relationships at once."

Juan nodded approvingly. "Your strategic thinking about these matters has been incredibly valuable to our family's standing."

There was that word again. Valuable. Each time he used it, I felt more secure in my position.

By ten o'clock, I was back in my bedroom, getting ready for sleep. I sat at my vanity again, taking off my jewelry and carefully applying night cream to keep my skin looking good. The woman in the mirror looked satisfied, accomplished.

I thought about the day's successes - the productive meeting with my social allies, Juan's continued appreciation for my contributions, Zaid's upcoming integration into the family business. Everything was going exactly as I'd planned.

Nia was dead, eliminating the last real threat to my secrets. The fake Sophia seemed completely resigned to her situation. Saskia stayed properly scared. My social position grew stronger every day.

"Tomorrow will be even better," I told my reflection, then smiled with deep contentment.

I got into my luxurious bed and settled in for the night. Outside, I could hear the distant sounds of the city - carriages on cobblestones, faint music from late-night parties, night birds calling. But here in my room, everything was perfectly controlled, perfectly peaceful.

Fifteen years of careful planning and patient manipulation had brought me to this moment. I was no longer the desperate young woman who'd married for survival. I was Eloise Stewart, one of the most influential women in the capital, secure in my power and confident in my future.

I closed my eyes and let sleep take me, dreaming of my influence continuing to grow and my control becoming even stronger. Everything was going according to plan.
