Isabela

The silence after André’s fall was deafening. Even as the echoes of gunfire faded into nothing, the weight of what we’d just survived lingered heavily in the air. I glanced at Gabriel, whose hands still gripped the weapon tightly. His chest rose and fell with labored breaths, but his expression remained unreadable.

“Gabriel,” I whispered, touching his arm gently. “It’s over.”

His head tilted slightly, as if he hadn’t heard me at first. Then, with a slow exhale, he lowered the gun. It clattered softly against the floor, and his hand came up to rub his face, wiping away the sweat and tension etched into his features.

“Over,” he repeated, the word hollow. His voice carried no triumph, only exhaustion.

I stepped closer, wrapping my arms around him. For a moment, he didn’t move. Then, slowly, his arms came around me, holding me as if I were the only thing tethering him to reality.

“You’re safe,” he murmured, his breath warm against my temple. “That’s all that matters.”

“We’re both safe,” I corrected softly. “We made it through.”

His hold tightened, and I felt the subtle tremor in his body. Gabriel Castellano, the man who seemed unshakable, was unraveling in my arms. It was both humbling and heartbreaking.

The rest of the team moved quickly, securing the scene and ensuring there were no lingering threats. Laura appeared in the doorway, her face a mixture of relief and urgency.

“We need to get out of here,” she said, gesturing to the vehicles waiting outside. “Law enforcement will be swarming the docks soon. We can’t risk being here when they arrive.”

Gabriel straightened, his composure returning as if a switch had been flipped. He nodded curtly. “Make sure everything is cleaned up. No traces left behind.”

Laura gave a sharp nod before disappearing to relay his orders. Gabriel turned to me, his eyes scanning my face.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I nodded, though my legs felt shaky. “I’m fine. Just… ready to go home.”

The word “home” hung between us, heavy with unspoken meaning. Gabriel’s gaze softened, and for a moment, I thought he might say something. But instead, he reached for my hand, intertwining our fingers as he led me outside.

The ride back to the estate was quiet. Miguel’s innocent laughter and Clara’s comforting presence awaited us, and the thought of them brought a flicker of peace to my restless mind. Gabriel sat beside me, his posture relaxed but his eyes far away. I knew he was replaying the events, analyzing every decision, every outcome.

When we pulled into the estate, the familiar sight of the sprawling grounds brought a wave of relief. Clara met us at the door, her worry melting into a smile as she saw us.

“You’re back,” she said, pulling me into a brief hug before turning to Gabriel. “Miguel’s been asking for you both all night.”

Gabriel’s lips twitched into a faint smile. “Then let’s not keep him waiting.”

Miguel’s little feet padded down the hallway before we even reached the living room. He launched himself into Gabriel’s arms, chattering excitedly about the stories Clara had read to him.

“Papa, you missed it! The dragon was so big!” Miguel exclaimed, his hands gesturing wildly.

Gabriel chuckled, lifting him effortlessly. “I’ll have to hear all about it tomorrow.”

I watched them, my heart swelling at the sight. For all the danger and chaos we had faced, this moment made it all worth it.

The house grew quiet as the night wore on. Miguel had fallen asleep in Gabriel’s arms, and Clara had retired to her room. I found myself in the kitchen, staring out the window at the moonlit gardens. My thoughts were a tangled mess of relief, fear, and hope.

Gabriel entered, his presence grounding me. He leaned against the counter, studying me silently for a moment before speaking.

“You’re thinking too much,” he said gently.

I sighed, turning to face him. “It’s hard not to. Everything feels so fragile. Like one wrong move could break it all.”

He stepped closer, his hands resting lightly on my arms. “We’re stronger than you think, Isabela. Together, we can handle whatever comes next.”

“And what does come next?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Gabriel’s expression turned serious, his eyes holding mine. “We rebuild. We strengthen our defenses. And we make sure no one can ever threaten what we’ve built again.”

There was a conviction in his voice that sent a shiver down my spine. Gabriel Castellano was a man who didn’t make empty promises.

The following days were a blur of activity. Gabriel’s team worked tirelessly to consolidate their hold over André’s dismantled empire, while Laura coordinated efforts to track any remnants of his operation. I threw myself into helping where I could, determined to contribute rather than stand on the sidelines.

But as the days stretched into a week, a sense of normalcy began to return. Miguel’s laughter filled the halls again, and the estate’s once-tense atmosphere softened. Gabriel and I found moments of quiet in the chaos, sharing meals and stolen glances that spoke volumes.

One evening, as we sat by the fireplace after putting Miguel to bed, Gabriel reached for my hand.

“I’ve been thinking,” he began, his tone uncharacteristically hesitant.

I raised an eyebrow, curious. “That sounds dangerous.”

He chuckled softly, but his expression quickly turned serious. “We’ve been through hell together, Isabela. And through it all, you’ve stood by me. I don’t take that for granted.”

My heart raced as he spoke, his words weaving their way into the cracks of my guarded heart.

“I want to build a future with you,” he continued, his voice steady. “A real future. No more running, no more secrets. Just us.”

Tears welled in my eyes as I nodded. “I want that too.”

Gabriel’s hand tightened around mine, and in that moment, the weight of our shared struggles felt lighter. Together, we were ready to face whatever the future held.
