Isabela

The night air was thick as Gabriel and I stood on the balcony of his study, overlooking the city below. The lights twinkled like scattered stars, but the serene view did little to ease the tension coiled in my chest. The meeting with Alves had been successful, but it felt like a prelude to something darker.

Gabriel’s phone buzzed, breaking the heavy silence. He glanced at the screen, his jaw tightening. Without a word, he stepped inside to take the call, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The weight of the past few weeks settled heavily on my shoulders. Despite our progress, the danger seemed to grow more palpable with every step forward.

When Gabriel returned, his expression was grim. “André knows.”

I turned sharply. “Knows what?”

“About Alves. He’s already sent people to look for him. Laura’s team is moving him to a secure location tonight, but it’s only a matter of time before André retaliates.”

Fear spiked through me, but I forced myself to stay calm. “What does that mean for us?”

Gabriel’s gaze softened as he approached me, placing his hands gently on my shoulders. “It means we need to be prepared for anything. He’ll come after everyone involved in this.”

I swallowed hard, nodding. “We’ll handle it. We have to.”

The next morning brought no relief. Gabriel’s security team reported increased surveillance around the house, a clear sign that André’s reach was closing in. I found myself pacing the living room, unable to shake the sense of impending doom.

Gabriel entered, his presence commanding even in moments of uncertainty. “Isabela, I need you to listen to me,” he said, his tone firm but kind. “We’re tightening security, but you need to stay inside unless absolutely necessary. Clara will be here to help with Miguel, and I’ll have someone with you at all times if you leave.”

I bristled at the implication of being confined, but I understood the necessity. “I’m not a prisoner, Gabriel. I can take care of myself.”

“I know you can,” he said, his expression softening. “But this isn’t just about you. It’s about Miguel. I can’t risk losing either of you.”

The sincerity in his voice tempered my frustration. I nodded reluctantly, knowing he was right.

Later that day, Laura arrived with updates. She spread a series of documents across the dining table, her usual calm demeanor replaced with a hint of urgency.

“These are the names of André’s known associates,” she explained, pointing to the highlighted entries. “We’ve started cross-referencing them with the information Alves provided. A few of them are already on the authorities’ radar, but there’s one name that stands out.”

Gabriel leaned over the table, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the list. “Who?”

“Raul Ferreira,” Laura said, tapping the name with her pen. “He’s a key player in André’s financial operations. If we can tie him to the transfers Alves provided, it’ll solidify our case.”

“And where is he now?” Gabriel asked.

Laura hesitated. “We’re working on tracking him. He’s been careful, but we have a lead on one of his properties. It’s risky, but if we can intercept him, we might be able to secure more evidence.”

Gabriel straightened, his determination evident. “Then we’ll find him.”

That evening, I found myself alone in the garden, the cool breeze offering a brief reprieve from the suffocating tension. Gabriel’s words from earlier lingered in my mind. He was doing everything he could to protect us, but the weight of it all was beginning to show.

I heard his footsteps before I saw him. He approached quietly, his expression softer than it had been all day.

“You needed some air?” he asked, stopping beside me.

I nodded. “It’s hard to breathe sometimes, with everything happening.”

Gabriel’s gaze shifted to the horizon, his jaw tightening. “I hate that this is your reality right now. If I could take it all away, I would.”

“I know,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “But we’re in this together, remember?”

He turned to me, his eyes searching mine. “I won’t let anything happen to you or Miguel. I swear it.”

The intensity of his words sent a shiver through me. Without thinking, I reached out, taking his hand in mine. “I believe you, Gabriel. And I trust you.”

For a moment, the world around us seemed to pause. The chaos, the fear, the uncertainty—all of it faded, leaving only the connection between us.

As the night deepened, Gabriel received a call that set everything into motion. Raul Ferreira had been located, and Gabriel’s team was already making plans to intercept him. The tension in the house skyrocketed as preparations began.

Gabriel pulled me aside before leaving. “Stay here. No matter what happens, stay inside and keep Miguel safe.”

I nodded, my heart pounding. “Be careful.”

He leaned in, his forehead resting briefly against mine. “I will. I promise.”

As he walked out the door, a sense of foreboding settled over me. The lines we had drawn were about to be tested, and I could only hope we were ready for what lay ahead.
