Chapter 114 An unexpected meeting
I left the office around noon to check on the new game River said he wanted. I figured he had gone out of the phase of asking me to get new games for him, only for Brion to call an hour ago, letting me know my son had a demand for a new game, one I was forced to go out to check. Why? I was trying to be the best mum ever. Which was why I opted to go check on it myself instead of sending Brion, who would have been more than eager to go on the errand.
I strode down the aisle, checking the games on the cases until I got to the one that looked exactly like the picture Brion sent, only for me to realize it wasn't the same. The one on the shelf was the old version. After checking through the others with no success, I walked over to the cashier.
"Excuse me. Do you have this in your store?" I showed her the picture on my phone. "My son wants this model, but I can't seem to find it here."
And their shop is said to be the largest toy store in the country. Not seeing it here made me want to doubt what I heard because it didn't seem like that to me now.
"Oh, that's the recent model." She passed my phone to me back to me, smiling. "It's still in the testing period. They have released only a handful of it, which is why we don't have it here," she explained. "Oh, I see." It clarified why the largest shop didn't have it. "Do you, by chance, know how I can get one of the few they released?"
She looked thoughtfully at my question before shaking her head. "I'm afraid not. Why don't you wait until it's released to purchase it for your son?"
"I see." I felt disappointed at the thought of telling my son I couldn't get the toys he wanted because they had not yet released it.
"Why don't you leave your number here? I will let you know the moment they release it. You will be among the first to buy it. This way your son will feel it's special," she suggested, trying to make me feel better, and she succeeded.
Thanking her, I wrote my number down for her to call when the product arrived before I left. It was almost 3, and I needed to be in the office to wait for Lilith's arrival.
I had just stepped out of the shop when I collided with someone. I staggered, almost falling to my butt, but I righted myself at the last moment. Whirling around, I glared at the person who knocked into me, only for my mouth to open in shock at the sight of the last person I thought I would meet in France, not with the news of them leaving the country for good.
"Dieudonne?" I blinked, my eyes sizing him up from his head to his toe, noting how much he changed. The last time I saw him was on the day I got married to Dashiell, and he was standing next to our mum with a goofy smile on his face, thinking of how much they got from the union.
"Nova?" He looked equally shocked to see me. Rubbing his eyes, he looked at me with a confused expression on his face, as if he were staring at a ghost. "God, Nova. You have changed so much!" He gave me another appraisal, his gaze lingering on my face a tad bit longer.
"I can say the same about you." I gave him a pointed look. Dieudonne had changed a lot since the last time I saw him, back when he looked like a little young master. Now, he looked so bad, I wondered about the last time he got a haircut. I didn't ask him that, though. It was none of my business.
"How have you been? Mum -"
"I'm sorry, I have some things to do." I looked at my wristwatch, acting serious as I forced a smile on my face. "I will be on my way."
Before he could stop me, to tell me more about his mother, and how they had been looking for me. I walked over to my car and made to get in, but he was faster.
"Nova!" He rushed after me before I could enter my car, standing next to it with his eyes wide. "Why do you seem to be in a hurry?" He looked at me with a frown. "I haven't finished what I was telling you. Mum is worried about you, and so is Dad. They have tried contacting you for a while now," he said, acting like we were normal siblings. We were not the typical siblings and would never be, not when they saw me as a walking pocket full of money and not a human. They never treated me like I mattered, so why should I?
"And why are they looking for me? Short on cash? I bet." My tone was hard, and I knew he could tell I was pissed at him.
"That's not true." He rubbed the back of his neck, nervously looking at me as he bit his lower lip. "We were worried about you, and have been trying to reach out to you. We contacted your husband, but he said -"
"Dashiell isn't my husband anymore. We separated five years ago. Get your facts straight!" I gritted out through clenched teeth, offended by his words.
"But..." He frowned, his gaze thoughtful. "Mother claimed she saw you two in a video during his company's gala. Obviously, you are back together. Why are you lying?"
"I'm not." I closed the distance between us, so I was standing so close that our noses almost brushed. "I have nothing to do with Dashiell, likewise you. Return home and tell your parents not to look for me. I don't know who they are, and don't bloody care to do so."
I opened my car and got in, ignoring the stunned man who was looking shocked as he watched me leave, probably telling himself he mistook someone for me and became the Nova he knew would never raise her voice on her brother, and would never talk back even when she wanted to.
The joke's on them now, though. That Nova was long gone, replaced by one who wants nothing but to make those who caused me pain feel the same way I felt.
