The atmosphere was heavy, almost stagnant that morning in the penthouse, as if the air hung weighty over all things. The very air seemed to be brimming with secrets, too heavy worthily to be breathed freely as last night's encounter had taken quite a beat. I stepped out of the bedroom into an ominous yet dreamlike sense-of-waiting while the painful rebuke played in my mind.
Caspian's voice was raw; his words cut like blades, and I had seen something else glimmering beneath all that fury, but it was a fear - not for his life, nor for his empire. It should have soothed me into some kind of reassurance, but instead, it's left me dancing on razor's edge. Expectant and swollen, I pushed through the door and stepped into the kitchen.
He was already in the kitchen, leaning against the counter. He looked like a man who had not slept. His shirt rumpled, the buttons open at the top, and an almost disheveled look of his dark hair made him even more intense. Gone was the slick, impenetrable CEO I had met initially. He was just... Caspian. And that frightened me more than anything.
On hearing me, he looked up, his piercing gray eyes locking with mine in an intensity that had my breath caught. Neither one of us spoke for a moment. It was loaded space between us, layered with all we had both said-and not said.
"We need to talk about this," he said finally, his voice low and controlled.
I hesitated, hanging onto the kitchen island as though it could anchor me. "About what?"
"About last night," he said to me, though his intonation suggested it was about far more than that.
I slowly nodded, feeling my chest tighten as I moved to sit at the counter. The marble was cool against my hands, the absolute opposite of the heat coming from his gaze.
Caspian stood, his stringy frame tense. His fists were clenched on the counter, his knuckles white. I could guess he was trying to hold it together, but the tension in his jaw gave him away.
"I owe you the truth," he began very low now, almost in a rough voice. "About Alexander. About everything."
"Alexander," I repeated, testing the weight of the name on my tongue. "Your former right-hand man."
For a moment, he stared at the floor, then returned his wandering eyes to me once more. "We began together years ago. He was a person I trust trusted completely. A person I thought I could depend on. But somewhere along the way, things changed. He figured he'd worked too hard to take just that."
Bitterness was splattered around in his voice and some unshed tears lay behind that rough mask.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" I asked softly, steadier than I ever intended to be.
Caspian pressed his lips together. "It's because I didn't want you to get involved ," he admitted. "Alexander doesn't just want want my company's downfall, he's targeting me. And now... he's targeting you."
The air seems to have been drawn from the room for a moment, replaced by a crushing sense of dread "What do you mean by that?"
He stood up to his full height as if the world changed him, blood rushing toward his cheeks. "These warnings, these messages. They're not just threats, Lily. He is trying to tell me that he can get to you; he's not afraid to destroy anything that gives my life meaning.".
The weight of his words made me struggle to find the right words. "What happens now?"
Caspian eyes softened, and for a moment his mask slipped . "Now, I fight back now but I can't do so while worrying about your safety."
A part of me wanted to resist, to tell him that I wasn't some fragile flower that needed protection from the world. But a part of me, the one who had seen that pain in his eyes last night, knew.
"You don't have to keep me away from this," I said. "I can help you with this, Caspian. I need to be a part of it."
He shook his head, a venomous sneer spreading across his features. "You don't understand, Lily. Alexander is not merely an angry ex-employee. He' dangerous. And I don't think I can afford to lose you."
"My heart curled up at his wretched temper," I said, but I was not going to back down. "You won't lose me," I said stubbornly. "But if you keep pushing me away, you'll lose yourself."
His gaze snapped to mine, and I worried I'd overstepped for a moment. Then he sighed, crouching against the counter. "You're right," he growled. "I've been so caught up in keeping you safe that I never saw how much I was closing you out. That ends now."
There was innocence to his words, innocence that made me experience the wall surrounding me disappear.
"Do you mean that?" I whispered.
He came in close, his face unclad in a way I'd never experienced before. "I do," he whispered. "And I'll prove it to you."
His passion-charged temperature chilled my spine, but before I had a chance to respond before his phone vibrated on the counter. He raised an eyebrow at the screen, and the deepening shadow darkened further on his face.
"What is it this time?" I asked, my anxiety twisted into my stomach.
"Another threat," he said, showing me his screen. The text was short and sinister: You can't keep her safe forever.
My heartbeat stopped, but I remained composed. "It's Alexander," I said.
Caspian clenched his jaw. "He's threatening me. Scaring me into backing off."
"Don't give him the satisfaction, then," I said fiercely. "We'll see it through. We'll get past this. Together."
His eyes softened, and for a moment, the tightening around his mouth softened too. "You're amazing, you know that?" he said, pushing a strand of hair behind my ear.
I flushed but did not look away. "I am just doing what anyone would do."
"No," he said. "You're doing what no one else has ever done for me."
The blaze of his voice engulfed me, and in the moment, I knew how much he had been left to bear by himself. "Caspian."
I didn't have a moment to respond because he moved in tight and pressed his forehead into mine. The sensation was wrapping around me like a thick warm blanket.
"I swear to you, Lily," was his whisper, his voice shaking. "I will do everything I can to keep you safe. To keep us.".
And those words cut into my heart because they held in them the sincere substance of him speaking. But I checked the tears from my eyes. "We will make it through," I promised him, my voice steady in spite of the storm brewing inside me. "Together."
