Chapter 26 - An Apology

(FREYA'S POV).

"So, he deliberately asked you to take care of me?" I asked without showing the effect of surprise. Although I still couldn't believe what I was hearing. I never thought I would get sympathy from her.

Seriously.

I can't guess what's in his heart.

"Uhuh, he did," Aiden said. He focused his attention on the highway.

I continued to watch him. "Aiden," I called out.

"Yes, Fey?" He glanced at me, but immediately returned his gaze to the front.

"I have a question."

"About Dev?"

"No."

"About me?" he chuckled, teasing me. And I chuckled along.

"I'm serious, Aiden..."

"Okay, let me hear it."

"It's just if... if you have a girlfriend and she suddenly turns against you without you knowing why. What do you think you've done wrong?"

"What?" he gasped.

"It's just a parable. Just answer it," I protested. I snorted as he looked at me with raised eyebrows.

"Mm," he mumbled, touching his chin with his gaze focused on the road. "There are two things on my mind," he finally answered.

"What?" I asked impatiently.

"First, she has a revenge. Second, she's sick of me."

I paused.

Revenge?

sick?

But Devan didn't even want to divorce me. If he was sick of me, shouldn't he not have married me? It's not like he's sick with our relationship but like...

Revenge?

I squeezed the hem of my clothes. My throat suddenly felt dry. I swallowed with difficulty. I shouldn't have asked Aiden something like this. But somehow, his answer made me feel uneasy and scared. Making me fall into a fear I never wanted to feel.

"Fey? Are you okay?" I gasped, feeling Aiden's hand touch my arm.

"Oh, yes."

"Are you sure? You're suddenly quiet." He frowned.

"Yes. I'm fine." I smiled. Trying to act normal. "I think I'm sleepy. I couldn't sleep last night."

"Then go to sleep. I'll wake you up when we get home," he muttered.

"Um, thanks."

I used that as an excuse to stop this conversation. I didn't want someone to realize the looseness of the relationship between us. It hurt, but I didn't want to disappoint Devan's family. They've been so good to me. Like a real family.

I tried to close my eyes. When I blinked, I saw Aiden glancing at me. Making sure that I was asleep. And I tried to sleep again. Sleepiness was starting to set in. I don't know how long I pretended to sleep until everything was completely dark. No sound, no disturbance. Sleeping peacefully like a baby.

"Fey...."

"Freya...."

I gasped. I lifted my head and saw Aiden trying to wake me up. I tried to gather what life I had left. Blinking repeatedly and yawning as the sleepiness lingered.

"Sorry, did I startle you?"

I shook my head. I tried to sit up properly. I saw that my body was already wrapped in his jacket. Then naturally, I gave it back to him.

"Has it been a while?" I asked.

"No, just a few minutes ago."

"Oh," I muttered. I watched Aiden get out of the car and open the door for me.

"Need help?" he made sure I was awake with my eyes wide open. He even made sure my head didn't hit the top of the car with his hands that quickly covered it.

"Nope. And please … I'm not a kid, Aiden," I tease. He chuckles, closes the door, and starts walking with me.

As we walk into the house, I'm a little worried that Aiden's mom will see my arms and neck. She'll think something is wrong. I need to be able to stay calm when she asks me about it later.

"Mom is not at home. She's going to grandma's for the next two days."

"Grandma?" I looked at him in surprise. "Is she okay?"

"She's fine. Just a routine visit." Aiden smiled.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

"Fey, I'm in my room. Need to do some work. If you need anything, call me or Aunt Emma," Aiden looked at me.

"Um, thank you." I nodded. I smiled at him as he walked away. I followed behind him, climbing the stairs to the second floor. He turned left, and I went straight, heading towards Devan's room.

I let out a long sigh as I entered his room. Devan's distinctive smell immediately greeted my nose. The vibes of a Devan Harrison Haven. Everything was black, gray, and white. Several displays of his photos, and paintings that he bought at fantastic prices.

My gaze fell on a frame on the bedside table. A photo of the two of us. The photo of when Devan proposed to me. My heart slices. Hurt with a tightness in my chest. I can still feel the happiness of that time. When Devan knelt before me with the ring in his hand.

At that time we were really like a couple in love. He always spoiled me with all his attention and affection. Even I was always grateful to meet and be loved by someone like him.

I smiled wryly. Remembering that made me feel like sowing salt on a wound that hadn't dried up yet. At that moment I felt my cell phone buzzing.

I checked it. Jason's name popped up, making me cringe. The memory of the incident some time ago flashed back in my head. And I felt goosebumps.

"How dare you call me?" I snapped the moment I received his call. I didn't care about manners or any boundaries because he broke them first.

"Freya..."

"Don't call my name!" I shouted, "Are you out of your mind to do that to me? Why are you so bad at treating me like that?" I cursed at him with anger on my face.

"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry about that time," he breathed heavily.

"And you're just doing it now?" I mocked him.

"I did, but you never took my call," he defended.

I fell silent. In an instant, my memories began to return. Yesterday I was too tired and sad to think about my cell phone. I was even just on the bed with no zest for life.

"Freya?"

"What?!" I snapped.

"Can we meet? I want to apologize in person."

"Don't you dare play me again, Jason! I won't believe a word you say," I warned.

"Please. I'm for real this time. I won't do anything bad to you."

"Oh, I guess you forgot what you did to me the other day!" I shouted in annoyance. My eyes glared at the floor. I was such a fool to trust him, to be betrayed, that I had to get a punishment that I didn't even deserve.

I should have said all that out loud to Jason, but I couldn't do it. I took a deep breath. Trying to end the call.

"I know I was wrong..."

"That's enough, Jason. I'm tired."

"Freya, Please! Give me a chance to apologize."

"I accept it. You already did. So stop doing something futile because I'll never deal with you again. Not again, Jason." I swallowed hard. Sitting on the edge of the bed.

"I'll go to your house."

I suddenly stiffened. My eyes widened. "Are you crazy?!" I shouted.

"Not really. I'm sure Devan is not home. Meet me outside or I'll come to you."

"You're crazy," I pleaded, "Hust do it. You won't find me there!"

I pulled the phone away from my ear. I was hitting the red button on the screen repeatedly in annoyance until the call with Jason ended.

He must be crazy. Really, really crazy.
