Confessions & Broken Pacts
Confessions & Broken Pacts
Isabella’s POV
The sunlight that filtered through the study windows felt thin and sterile, a stark contrast to the languid warmth I had fallen into. I woke slowly, the soft cushions of the couch still imprinted against my skin, a quiet ache in my core reminding me of the intimate, desperate session with Julien just hours before. My first thought was a question: where was he? He had put me to rest, kissed my forehead, and disappeared.
I found him in the hallway outside his study, a phone pressed to his ear, his jaw clenched as he spoke in a low, sharp tone. He was in full "Fortress Mode," and he had clearly decided his partner's place was in the fortress, not on the front lines. The moment he hung up, he turned, his eyes softening the instant they landed on me.
"You're awake," he said, moving to me, his hand coming to rest on my belly in that new, possessive way. "You should be resting."
I crossed my arms over my chest, a playful defiance in my stance. "You think you can drug me with good sex and then run off to fight our wars alone?"
He smirked, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "It seemed like a good strategy at the time. You needed to rest. We both did."
"I am not a damsel to be left behind, Julien," I said, my voice low. "This is my fight, too. You told me we were in this together, and I meant it. You are not going to sideline me."
His expression became guarded. "This isn't a game, Bella. I've seen what they can do. I'm not risking you. Not now. Not ever."
I stepped closer, my fingers tracing the line of his jaw. The scent of his cologne was a familiar anchor. "I know. And I’m not asking you to risk me. I’m asking you to trust me. My mind is my strongest weapon. I am the one who understands these people from the outside looking in. I am the one who can see the cracks in their plan because I've seen the same cracks in myself. We are a team, Julien. A united front."
He held my gaze, a silent battle playing out between his protective instincts and his deep-seated need for control. I knew he wouldn’t budge easily. So I played my final card. I leaned in, my lips brushing his ear, my voice dropping to a seductive whisper. "Besides," I murmured, "if you take me with you, I can show you how grateful I am for trusting me. In a way that you can't refuse."
He stiffened, the air between us crackling with unspoken heat. He knew I meant it. His possessive nature, his raw desire for me, it was his greatest weakness and my greatest strength. He looked at me for a long moment, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face.
"Fine," he growled, the word a delicious surrender. "But you do exactly what I tell you, when I tell you."
The air in the interrogation room was a sterile, unforgiving kind of cold, smelling of bleach and old ambition. It was one of the many unused studies on the third floor of the mansion, a room of polished mahogany and high, arched windows that now felt more like a cage than a workspace. Julien and I sat across a vast, empty desk from Leyla, who was a ghost of her former, glittering self. Her hands were clasped in her lap, knuckles white, and her perfectly manicured nails were chipped. The defiance that had once been her signature was gone, replaced by a defeated weariness.
She looked at me, a flicker of her old malice returning. "So, the little princess is here to gloat?" she sneered. "Have you come to see your victory up close?"
Julien’s cold voice cut through the air, so sharp it could draw blood. "She's here because you have information we need, and she is the only person here with the patience to listen to a narcissist's pity party." He didn’t even look at her. His gaze remained fixed on me, a silent, powerful anchor.
Leyla’s chin lifted slightly, a flicker of her old pride returning before it vanished just as quickly. "You think I'll just confess everything to you?"
"You already have," I replied, leaning forward just enough to show my intent. "By being here. By trying to ruin me. I just want to understand why. Was it all for Julien?"
Her facade shattered. Her shoulders slumped, and a single, perfect tear traced a path down her cheek, leaving a faint shimmer on her pale skin. "He was all I ever wanted. All I ever planned for," she whispered, her voice a fragile thing. "But you… you had him without even trying. He looked at you, he protected you, he touched you… the way he never did me. And you didn’t even want him at first. You just stumbled into his life, and you took everything I spent my life fighting for."
I felt a cold pity for her. A woman who had built her entire existence around a man’s unattainable affection. It was a kind of madness, a desperation that was both sad and terrifying.
"Was it just about Julien, Leyla? Or was it more?" I pressed, my voice softer now, almost like a confessor.
She sniffled, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand. "He… he promised me… a new life. A partnership. That he would make sure I was taken care of, that I could finally be something more than just a model, a pretty face. He said my art would be seen. All I had to do was follow his plan."
"His?" I asked, the word a simple key. I knew the lock was about to break.
She looked up, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and regret. "Julien’s father. He… he told me Julien was too soft. That he was weak because of his obsession with you. He said Julien needed to be broken so he could be rebuilt into the man his father wanted him to be. He told me you were just the instrument. That once you were gone, Julien would be better. Stronger. He promised me the world."
My heart sank. The pieces clicked together with a sickening finality. Leyla wasn’t the mastermind. She was just another pawn in the old man's game, a disposable tool. A small, insignificant piece in a much larger, much more dangerous game.
"And Stracy?" I pressed, my voice now laced with ice. "What was her part in this?"
Leyla's gaze fell. Her breath hitched, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of genuine fear. "She's my sister. We… we grew up together, and we were always so different. I was always the dreamer, the fighter. She… she was the planner. The silent one. She was the one who was supposed to get close to you. She was the one who was supposed to make sure you were eliminated without a trace." She shuddered, and a dark shadow crossed her face. "She's not like me. I just wanted to be with Julien. She wants to see his whole world burn to the ground. She hates him… for what his father did to our family."
The truth was a bitter pill to swallow. I rose, feeling a new kind of disgust for this broken woman. She was a victim, yes, but she was also a willing participant in a twisted game of power and revenge. She had made a choice, and that choice had cost her everything.
"What are you going to do?" Leyla asked, her voice small, fragile.
"That's not up to me," I said, a flicker of compassion in my eyes. "But I can tell you this: the man you worked for? He doesn't play fair. And neither do we." I turned and walked out, Julien right behind me, the door closing with a quiet thud.
The hallway was sterile and empty. But the world inside me was a roiling storm of information. I had the answers I needed. The enemy wasn't just Julien's father. It was a woman named Stracy, driven by a deep, generational hatred, fueled by a desire for a vengeance that was far more powerful than money or control.
My hand went to my stomach, a protective instinct. We were not just fighting for an empire. We were fighting for our lives, for the life of our unborn child, for the future we had so carefully built together. And now, armed with the truth, we could finally fight back. My mind was already forming new plans, new strategies. We had a new enemy. And we were going to make sure she regretted the day she ever crossed us.
