Chapter 85: The Bonfire Confession 2

Chapter 85: The Bonfire Confession 2
Their lips met softly at first, a gentle exploration after years apart. Then Leonard's arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against him, and the kiss deepened into something that spoke of longing and promise and homecoming.

Laura's hands tangled in Leonard's hair, and she kissed him with all the love and fear and hope she'd been carrying. He tasted like coffee and mint, and his arms around her felt like safety and adventure combined.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing hard, Laura saw that Leonard's eyes were bright with tears that matched her own.

"I've wanted to do that since the moment you walked into my office for your interview," Leonard admitted.

"You have a funny way of showing it," Laura teased. "The impossible assignments, the public criticism..."

"Were all desperate attempts to keep you at a distance because I knew the moment I let you close, I'd be lost." Leonard kissed her forehead, her cheeks, the corner of her mouth. "Turns out I was lost anyway."

They sat by the fire for hours, talking about everything—their fears, their hopes, how they'd navigate working together while dating. They made promises about communication and honesty, about not letting old wounds poison new growth.

"I should probably tell you," Leonard said as the fire burned low, "that my mother is going to be insufferably pleased about this. She's been dropping hints about you since the charity gala."

"Your mother knows?"

"My entire family knows. Apparently I've been obvious about my feelings for months." Leonard pulled Laura closer against his side. "Everyone knew except us, apparently."

Laura laughed, feeling lighter than she had in years. "Jane's going to claim credit for this. She's been meddling since day one."

"Let her claim credit. I don't care who helped us get here, as long as we're finally here."

They sat in comfortable silence, watching the fire die to embers. Laura felt Leonard's steady heartbeat against her back, and thought about how many times they'd almost reached this point only to have something interrupt. But they were here now, finally, with nothing left between them but possibility.

"Laura?" Leonard said quietly.

"Yeah?"

"Thank you for being brave enough to try again."

"Thank you for waiting for me to catch up," Laura replied.

As they prepared to leave, Leonard pulled Laura back for one more kiss—deeper this time, a promise of everything they were building together. When they finally separated, both were smiling.

"So what happens now?" Laura asked as they walked back to his car.

"Now we figure out how to tell the office we're together without causing chaos," Leonard said. "And we start building the relationship we should have had four years ago."

"Think we can handle it?"

Leonard opened the car door for her, then leaned in for another quick kiss. "With you? I think I can handle anything."

As they drove back to the city, Laura's phone buzzed with a text from Jane: "Did you finally tell him???"

Laura smiled and typed back: "We told each other."

Jane's response was immediate: "FINALLY. About damn time. Dinner this weekend so I can get all the details?"

Laura showed the message to Leonard, who laughed. "Tell her yes. And tell her thanks for the meddling."

Laura sent the message, then set her phone aside and reached for Leonard's hand. He laced their fingers together without taking his eyes off the road, and Laura felt something settle in her chest, a rightness that had been missing since their breakup.

They were really doing this. Building something new from the ashes of what they'd lost. And for the first time in four years, Laura felt truly hopeful about her future.

A future that, finally, included Leonard Conti exactly where he belonged, beside her, holding her hand, promising to catch her when she fell.
