Chapter 84 The Ritual Begins
DANIEL'S POV
Viktor had us arranged in a circle like pieces on a chessboard he had been playing for twenty years. Lisa was in the center still chained and bleeding from where the silver cuffs cut into her skin. I stood at one point of the circle. Ryan at another. Adrian at the third. Emma knelt at the fourth point and I did not understand what she represented but Viktor seemed to think it mattered.
Rogues surrounded us chanting in a language I did not recognize. Old words that sounded like they came from somewhere ancient and violent. Viktor moved between us orchestrating everything like a conductor leading an orchestra toward its final crescendo.
"The ritual of ascension." Viktor's voice carried over the chanting and he sounded almost reverent. "Silver wolf blood for power. Mate's sacrifice for bond breaking. Brother's witness for legitimacy. Essence of the ancient for transformation. Combined properly they create something new. An Alpha who can command both pack and rogue without resistance or challenge."
He moved to Lisa first and pulled out a knife that looked ceremonial. The blade was silver and curved and when he cut her arm she hissed in pain but did not scream. Blood dripped into a bowl that one of the rogues held beneath the wound. I tried to lunge forward but my chains held me back and two rogues grabbed my shoulders to keep me still.
Viktor moved to Ryan next and I saw my brother's face go blank with the kind of acceptance that terrified me. "Your turn, Beta. The mate's willing sacrifice. You do not have to die for the ritual to work. Just give up your wolf. Become human for her. Let the pack bond sever completely and permanently."
Ryan did not hesitate even for a second. "Do it."
"No!" Lisa screamed and yanked against her chains hard enough that blood ran faster down her arms. "Ryan, don't do this. Please. I need you to stay who you are."
But Viktor was already cutting into the place where Ryan's mate mark used to be before he severed the bond. He chanted words in that same language while drawing out something I could see glowing beneath Ryan's skin. Power or essence or whatever made him a wolf. Ryan convulsed and the sound he made was barely human. His back arched and his eyes rolled back and I watched my brother collapse to his knees.
The wolf essence drained from him into another ceremonial bowl and the liquid inside glowed with sick yellow light. Ryan was not dead but when he finally stopped shaking I could see the change. His eyes were different. Duller. Human. The wolf was gone and it was not coming back. The sacrifice had been made and accepted.
Viktor moved to Adrian and his smile was the kind that came before bad news. "The essence you brought. It is not quite authentic, is it? Did you really think I would not notice the difference between real ancient silver wolf essence and some diluted copy?"
Adrian's face gave nothing away but I saw his jaw tighten slightly. Viktor laughed and the sound echoed off the stone walls. "I can tell just by looking at it. You think I have not spent decades studying this? The real thing has weight and presence that cannot be faked. This is diluted and weakened by at least half. But it will do for what I need."
He opened the vial Adrian had brought and poured the silvery liquid into the bowls with Lisa's blood and Ryan's wolf essence. The mixture started glowing immediately but the light was wrong. Pulsing with energy that looked sick and unstable. Viktor raised the combined bowl over his head like an offering to gods that did not exist.
"And now the final component that makes everything complete." He turned to look at me directly and his eyes were Daniel's eyes staring back from a stranger's face. "The witness must choose. Daniel Marcus, firstborn of Alpha Marcus, brother to the silver wolf. You choose who lives and who dies. Your sister and her baby? Or everyone else in this room. The ritual requires death to seal the power transfer. I am generous enough to let you pick whose death it will be."
I looked at Lisa and saw her shaking her head at me. Looked at Emma who was crying silently with terror in her eyes. Looked at Ryan barely conscious on the floor after losing everything that made him who he was. Looked at Adrian who had somehow become an ally in all this chaos. Looked at my sister pregnant and terrified and still trusting me to make the right choice even when there was no right choice to make.
"Take me." The words came out steady even though my heart was pounding. "I am the firstborn. My blood started all of this mess when Dad sold me to you twenty years ago. Let me end it the same way. Kill me and complete your ritual but let them go free."
Viktor looked at me for a long moment like he was trying to decide if I was serious. "That is not how this works. You do not get to be the hero who saves everyone with a noble sacrifice."
The compound shuddered suddenly and the sound of explosions came from outside. Multiple blasts coordinated and close enough to shake dust from the ceiling. Viktor's head snapped toward the door and his expression shifted from confident to furious in seconds.
"What is happening out there?"
Marcus Krane's voice boomed through loudspeakers I had not noticed before. "VIKTOR! Your compound is surrounded on all sides. We have fifty warriors, three allied packs, and Council authorization to use lethal force. Release the hostages immediately or we level this entire place with you inside it."
Viktor's face twisted with rage that made him look inhuman. He yelled to his rogues in that ancient language and I caught enough words to understand the command. "Kill them. Kill them all right now."
