Chapter 39 Personal Challenge
LISA'S POV
I announced my decision at a mandatory pack meeting with every member of Moonstone gathered in the main hall. The room was congested and the air felt thick with anticipation as everyone waited to hear who I had chosen as champion.
"I will face Sophia personally without a champion," I said clearly, my Alpha voice carrying to every corner of the hall.
The reaction was just what I had expected. Ryan, Nathan, Adrian, and Daniel all protested at once, their voices overlapping in a chorus of objection that made my head pound. It was an unnecessary risk, they argued. I had nothing to prove. Using a champion was strategic, not weakness.
But I was firm and I raised my hand for silence. "I have spent my whole life with people fighting my battles or deciding I was too weak to fight them myself. The elders sent me away to the human city because they deemed me unfit for pack life. Ryan stood silent when I needed him to speak. Sophia claims I am an unstable Alpha who cannot lead effectively. If I hide behind a champion now, I am proving them all right."
I looked around the hall, meeting the eyes of pack members who had followed me, trusted me, believed in my leadership. "I will face Sophia myself and I win or lose on my own merit. That is my decision as your Alpha."
Elder Catherine stood from where she had been sitting with the other elders. "I support Alpha Lisa's decision," she said, though worry was clear in her aged features. "Sometimes the only way to silence doubt is through personal action. Lisa has earned the right to defend her position herself."
The vote was called and despite the protests from those closest to me, the pack supported my choice. They believed in me even when the people I loved struggled to let me take this risk.
The next three days passed in a blur of serious preparation that left my body aching but my mind sharp. Daniel trained me in combat, he pushed me harder than he ever had before. We spent hours in the training yard running through techniques and strategies until my muscles screamed and sweat soaked through my clothes.
"Sophia fights dirty," Daniel reminded me as he swept my legs and sent me crashing to the ground for the tenth time that morning. "She will use every advantage including psychological warfare. Do not let her get in your head."
Emma helped me to analyze Sophia's fighting style from what we had observed before, we pointed out patterns and weaknesses that I could exploit.
"One of Sophia's tactics is that she uses speed instead of her strength," Emma explained, spreading papers across the table in my office. "She will try to wear you down with quick strikes rather than committing to power moves. Just ensure you make her fight in close combat, then your strength can become your advantage."
Thanks to Nathan, I was able to focus more on getting ready for the challenge as he handled the pack duties during my preparation. He managed pack business so well, never complaining about the additional workload or making me feel guilty for the burden I had placed on him.
And Ryan kept his distance but I could feel him watching constantly. I caught glimpses of him observing my training sessions from windows or doorways, his expression haunted.
The night before the challenge, sleep didn't come. I lay in bed staring at the ceiling for hours before finally giving up and pulling on clothes suitable for walking the pack grounds. The night air was cool against my overheated skin and the silence was broken only by distant sounds of nocturnal animals and guards on patrol.
I walked aimlessly, trying to clear my head and gather the confidence I would need tomorrow. My path eventually led me to the training grounds where a single figure moved through combat drills.
Ryan was running through attack sequences alone, his body flowing through movements with practiced grace. He had not noticed my approach and I stood at the edge of the training area watching him work through techniques that were probably meant to distract him from worry.
For a long moment we just looked at each other across the distance. The mate bond stretched between us, visible only to ourselves, carrying emotions neither of us had spoken aloud in weeks.
Ryan broke the silence first. "I know you do not want my help with the challenge. I respect that decision even though it terrifies me. But I need to say this before tomorrow."
I waited, my heart pounding against my ribs.
"Watching you become the Alpha you are now has been the greatest honor of my life," Ryan said, his voice rough with emotion. "I failed you three years ago when I chose silence over defending you. I have failed you repeatedly since then with poor choices and weakness around Sophia. But you have never failed yourself or this pack. Tomorrow, you will prove that to everyone who ever doubted you."
The words softened me a little that the anger and hurt I had been holding suddenly felt lighter.
I was still angry at Ryan and the trust between us was still shattered but something changed.
I crossed the distance between us before I could second guess the impulse. Ryan's eyes widened as I approached but he did not move, he just watched me close the gap with an expression that held hope and fear in equal measure.
For the first time in weeks, I let myself feel the mate bond fully instead of suppressing it. The connection flooded through me with intensity that stole my breath and I realized it was not as weak as I thought. The bond was still there, still strong, just buried under layers of hurt and anger I had been using as protection.
I kissed Ryan desperately, pouring weeks of confusion and longing into the contact. He responded in the same way, his arms coming around me and pulling me close against his body. We clung to each other knowing tomorrow brought uncertainty neither of us could control.
We did not talk or make promises or even discuss what this meant for our broken relationship. Some moments do not require words.
