Chapter 37 Sophia's Challenge
LISA'S POV
What Emma just said left me speechless, it was hard to comprehend the fact that Sophia was planning to challenge me for the Alpha position. If she won then Moonstone Pack would be hers and everything my father had built would crumble into nothing.
"That is impossible," I said immediately, looking between Emma and Nathan. "Sophia is not pack. She has no standing to challenge me for leadership."
But Elder Catherine arrived within the hour and scattered that hope with. She settled into the chair across from my desk and folded her hands in her lap with the patience of someone delivering news they knew would hurt.
"Ancient pack law allows challenges from any wolf with Alpha blood who has legitimate grievance against current leadership," Catherine explained gently. "Sophia has Alpha lineage through Silver Creek Pack before it dissolved years ago. Her bloodline is documented and verified so her grievance is unfortunately valid under traditional law."
"What grievance?" I demanded, my voice sharper than I intended. "She has been exiled. She has no connection to this pack anymore."
Catherine's expression was sympathetic but firm. "Your weakened mate bond with the Beta creates huge instability in pack leadership structure. Sophia is claiming she can provide stronger and a more unified command. Legally, she has grounds to challenge based on that instability."
Everything I had feared, every consequence I had worried about when suppressing the mate bond, was coming true in the worst possible way and within a short time too.
The challenge was formally delivered three days later with ceremony that made it impossible to ignore or dismiss. Sophia appeared at pack borders with legal representatives from neutral territories, wolves trained in ancient law who cited precedents and procedures and they came prepared as if they have been carefullly planning this for months. She stood at the boundary line radiating confidence and her smile was pure calculated venom.
She knew exactly what she was doing. This was not impulsive revenge, this was a strategy executed with patience and intelligence.
I had two choices laid before me. Accept the challenge and risk everything I had built or step down voluntarily and hand Moonstone Pack to Sophia without a fight.
Neither option was acceptable but pack law gave me no alternatives.
Ryan returned to the pack immediately when Daniel contacted him against my wishes. He burst into my office where I sat with Daniel and Nathan reviewing legal documents that offered no solutions or loopholes. The door slammed open hard enough to hit the wall and Ryan stood in the doorway breathing hard like he had run the entire way.
"This is my fault," Ryan said immediately, his voice laced with guilt. "Sophia is using our broken bond as ammunition against you. I will stand before the entire pack and take full responsibility. I will make it absolutely clear that the instability comes from my failures, not yours."
The offer touched something deep in my chest, some part of me that still responded to Ryan trying to protect me despite everything broken between us. But the gesture changed nothing about our reality.
"Taking blame does not fix the facts, Ryan," I said quietly, hating how defeated I sounded even to my own ears. "The bond is weak. Leadership is compromised making Sophia have legitimate grounds regardless of whose fault it is or who takes responsibility."
Nathan had been silent all through, his analytical mind clearly working through possibilities and strategies. When he finally spoke, his voice carried careful consideration.
"What if Lisa does not fight this challenge alone?" Nathan asked, looking between all of us. "Pack law allows the Alpha to name a champion in certain circumstances. Someone fights on her behalf, representing her strength and leadership."
Daniel straightened in his chair, the truth of what Nathan said sent fear showing across his face. "That is true. If the grievance involves personal combat capability or matters where the Alpha's physical strength is questioned, a champion is permitted under ancient law. We could argue that Sophia's challenge is really about physical dominance rather than actual leadership competence."
"Who would serve as champion?" Ryan asked and I heard possession and jealousy in his tone despite everything fractured between us. "The champion needs to be someone whose victory would carry undisputable weight. Someone strong enough to defeat Sophia and credible enough that the pack accepts the outcome."
Before anyone could volunteer, before Ryan could offer himself or Nathan could step forward, commotion erupted at the pack house entrance. Loud voices passed through the walls and footsteps approached rapidly down the corridor outside my office. The sound of multiple people moving like they had somewhat urgent to be.
Adrian appeared in my doorway unannounced and unexpected, his presence commanded attention from everyone in the room. He wore travel clothes dusty from the road and his expression carried determination mixed with genuine concern. Behind him stood two of his pack warriors who had clearly accompanied him on the journey from Western Pack territory.
"I heard about the challenge," Adrian said, his eyes finding mine and holding steady with intensity that made my breath catch. "News travels fast between allied packs, especially when it involves potential leadership changes. I came as soon as I learned what Sophia was attempting."
"Adrian, you shouldn’t have traveled all this way," I started to say, feeling guilty that he had dropped everything to come here.
"I am offering myself as your champion, Lisa," Adrian stated clearly. "As Alpha of Western Pack and your ally, my victory would show that your leadership has support beyond your own territory. It would prove to everyone that other Alphas recognize your strength and capability."
The strategy sounded intelligent, I must admit. Adrian was powerful, exceptionally well trained in combat, and his status as Alpha gave him credibility that would be difficult for anyone to dispute. If he fought as my champion and won, it would not only defeat Sophia's challenge but also strengthen my political position considerably.
But the moment Adrian finished speaking, Ryan went completely rigid beside me. Every muscle in his body tensed and a low growl rumbled from deep in his chest, audible to everyone present in the sudden silence. His eyes flashed as his wolf rose dangerously close to the surface and the sound that came from him was pure territorial fury and possessive rage.
For the first time in weeks, I felt the mate bond flare between Ryan and me with intensity that stole my breath and made my heart stutter. The connection I had been deliberately suppressing, that had faded to barely perceptible pull, suddenly roared to life fueled by Ryan's jealous response to another Alpha offering to fight for me.
