Chapter 99 – Whispers Beneath the Moonlight
The night air outside the Reynolds mansion was cool and fragrant with blooming jasmine. Moonlight streamed through the open balcony doors, painting soft silver trails across the floor. Inside, Elena lay half-asleep, nestled in the warmth of Kian’s embrace.
His arm was heavy across her waist, his breathing slow and even. She could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her palm. For the first time in a long while, she felt utterly safe.
But peace, as she had learned, was a fragile thing.
A faint vibration buzzed against the nightstand. Kian’s phone. He didn’t stir, so Elena reached out instinctively, half intending to silence it. But the name flashing across the screen froze her blood.
“Ivy.”
Her hand trembled slightly. That name—one she hadn’t heard in months. Ivy Lang, the elegant socialite who had once been Kian’s rumored fiancée before Elena re-entered his life. A woman who had tried, more than once, to wedge herself between them under the guise of friendship.
Elena stared at the screen until it stopped vibrating. She told herself not to overthink, but sleep refused to come afterward.
When Kian woke early the next morning, she was already sitting by the window, a cup of tea untouched beside her.
He frowned slightly, walking toward her. “You’re awake early. Couldn’t sleep?”
Her gaze met his. Calm, steady—but there was a shadow beneath her eyes. “Someone called you last night.”
He froze mid-step. “Who?”
“Ivy.”
Silence. The kind that stretched and thickened until it almost hurt to breathe.
Kian exhaled slowly, moving to crouch before her. “Elena, look at me.”
She did.
“I didn’t answer because there’s nothing between us anymore. She’s been trying to reach me about a business project I turned down last month. I thought she’d stopped.”
“Then why call at midnight?” Her voice was soft, not accusing, but full of quiet pain.
He reached for her hand. “Because she doesn’t know when to quit. And I didn’t want you dragged into that mess again.”
Elena’s lips trembled. “You promised me, Kian. No secrets. No past ghosts hiding in the dark.”
He closed his eyes briefly, guilt flickering across his features. “You’re right. I should’ve told you she reached out again. I’m sorry.”
Her heart softened immediately—he was never one to lie to her. Yet, the ache in her chest didn’t fade completely. “Then promise me this—if she calls again, I’ll be the first to know.”
He lifted her hand and kissed it reverently. “I promise, Elena. No one and nothing will ever come between us again.”
But fate had other plans.
\---
That afternoon, Kian had to leave for an emergency meeting at the Reynolds Corporation headquarters. The board was restless, and the tension surrounding a major merger had reached boiling point.
Elena, left alone, tried to distract herself with household matters. But by evening, a message arrived that made her heart stop.
Unknown Number: “Mrs. Reynolds, we need to talk. It’s about your husband. 9 p.m., La Vienne Café. Come alone.”
Elena’s instincts screamed that it was a trap. Yet, her curiosity and worry overpowered reason. She sent Kian a text—“Are you still at the office?”—and when he didn’t reply immediately, she made a decision she might regret.
\---
La Vienne Café was dimly lit, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. Elena entered wearing a simple coat and scarf, her heart thudding.
Then she saw her.
Ivy Lang, in a crimson dress, her beauty sharp and calculated. She smiled faintly as Elena approached.
“Elena Reynolds,” Ivy greeted smoothly. “Still as radiant as ever. I was almost afraid you wouldn’t come.”
Elena’s expression was calm but cold. “You called me. Make it quick.”
Ivy tilted her head, swirling her coffee. “You deserve to know what kind of man you’re married to.”
Elena stiffened. “Careful with your words, Ivy.”
“Oh, I’m being generous,” Ivy said, her tone honeyed but venomous. “Kian and I go way back. There are things about his business dealings you’ve never seen. You think he’s the perfect husband, but tell me—has he ever told you about Project Seraph?”
Elena frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Ivy smiled, her eyes glinting with satisfaction. “A secret merger—one that could destroy several smaller companies. Including one owned by your late father.”
Elena’s blood ran cold. “You’re lying.”
“I’m not.” Ivy slid an envelope across the table. “Here’s proof. You can decide for yourself whether your perfect husband is still the man you think he is.”
Elena hesitated. Every instinct told her not to touch it. Yet, her hand reached out.
Before she could open it, a familiar, commanding voice cut through the air.
“That’s enough, Ivy.”
Elena’s head snapped up. Kian stood at the café entrance, dressed in his black suit, eyes blazing with fury.
Ivy froze, her confident mask cracking. “Kian—”
“I told you never to approach my wife again.”
He strode forward, taking Elena by the wrist and pulling her gently but firmly to his side. “And you,” he said coldly, “will regret using my name to spread lies.”
Ivy’s lips twisted. “Truth or lies, she’ll find out sooner or later. You can’t protect her from everything.”
“I don’t need to,” he said darkly. “Because she trusts me. And that’s something you could never buy or break.”
Kian turned, his arm around Elena, and led her out into the night without another word.
\---
Back in the car, the tension was thick. Elena stared out the window, the envelope still clutched in her hand.
Kian sighed, his voice softer now. “You shouldn’t have come alone. What if something had happened to you?”
“I was worried,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “You didn’t reply to my message. And when I saw her name again… I panicked.”
He reached over, gently taking the envelope from her. “Do you trust me?”
Her eyes met his. “With my heart.”
He opened the envelope right there. Inside were fake documents—poorly forged, intended to mislead. He tossed them onto the dashboard with a look of disgust.
“She was desperate,” he said. “Project Seraph was a legitimate rescue deal. I saved those companies. Your father’s legacy among them.”
Tears welled in Elena’s eyes. “Then why—why go to such lengths to hurt us?”
Kian cupped her face tenderly. “Because she’s still obsessed with what she lost. And she knows she’ll never have what we share.”
Elena leaned into his touch, her voice barely a whisper. “You’re my home, Kian. I don’t care what anyone says. I believe in you.”
He kissed her deeply, his hands trembling slightly against her skin. “And I’ll spend the rest of my life proving you’re right.”
\---
That night, when they returned home, Kian didn’t let her out of his sight. The danger wasn’t just external—it was emotional. And he refused to let fear poison their bond.
As they stood on the balcony again, the moon glowing above them, Elena slipped her hand into his.
“Promise me,” she whispered, “that no matter what happens next, we’ll always face it together.”
Kian turned her gently to face him. “Always.” His voice was steady, his eyes unwavering. “Even if the world turns against us, I’ll choose you again and again.”
She smiled through her tears. “Then that’s enough for me.”
And under that silver moonlight, their hearts spoke the same silent vow—
No lies. No fear. No past could ever undo what love had already sealed.
