Chapter Eighty-Four: The Calm Before the Next Storm

The days that followed Lucinda’s expulsion from the Hartley estate were both quiet and tense. Though peace had returned to the household, the air was filled with an eerie calm, as if the family was collectively holding its breath, waiting to see what would come next.

Elena took every moment she could to bask in Solara’s presence. The child had become more animated, her giggles echoing through the halls, her eyes sparkling every time Kian walked into the room. In those moments, Elena would pause and marvel at how such innocence could survive so much chaos.

But beneath the joy, she remained vigilant.

She spent her mornings reviewing company reports with Kian and the legal team. Lucinda’s departure had shaken the trust board. Several other extended family members had quietly reached out to express their loyalty to Kian and Elena, knowing now who truly held power in the family.

At breakfast one morning, Kian placed a file on the table between them. “We received confirmation from the private investigators,” he said, voice low. “Adriana is in Switzerland. She’s been trying to access a bank account that Lucinda set up for her.”

Elena didn’t even blink. “Should we act now?”

“No. Not yet,” Kian replied. “We need her to believe she’s safe. That way, she’ll get comfortable—and make mistakes.”

Elena nodded. “I want her to come back. I want her to look me in the eyes when she sees what Solara has grown into—a child protected by love and power, not schemes.”

Kian smiled, though his eyes remained serious. “You’ve changed, Elena.”

She tilted her head. “Am I colder?”

“No,” he said softly. “You’re stronger.”

Later that day, Elena received a call from an unexpected number. When she answered, a familiar voice came through—Anna, her old college friend and once one of her biggest supporters.

“Elena! You’re on every magazine cover this month,” Anna said with a laugh. “The media’s calling you the Iron Velvet of the Hartleys.”

Elena chuckled. “That sounds a little dramatic.”

“You used to cry over chemistry quizzes. Now you’re dismantling empires.”

“I guess motherhood changed everything.”

Anna hesitated. “I saw the interviews… and the leaks. People online are saying Adriana might return. Are you safe?”

There was a long pause.

Elena responded, her voice firm. “Safer than ever.”

Anna’s voice softened. “If you ever want to escape all of that, just come stay with me for a few days. No boardrooms, no scandals. Just ice cream and old rom-coms.”

Elena smiled, touched. “Thank you, Anna. I might take you up on that.”

That night, while Elena and Kian were putting Solara to sleep, one of the family’s security guards came to the door with a grim expression.

“There’s something you need to see.”

He led them downstairs to the family’s private security room. On the screen was a live feed from one of the gates at the far end of the estate.

A package.

Unmarked. Left anonymously.

Kian frowned. “When did this arrive?”

“Fifteen minutes ago. The courier wore a motorcycle helmet and never spoke.”

Kian signaled the guards to retrieve the package under full protocol. A few minutes later, it was brought into the estate’s security safe room, scanned, and examined.

Inside was a single item: a framed photograph.

It was a picture of Solara—taken from a distance. Likely from a public park visit a week prior.

Elena’s heart thudded.

On the back of the photo were three words, scrawled in familiar handwriting:

“She’s mine too.”

Adriana.

Elena’s fingers clenched around the edge of the frame, and for a moment, the calm she had carefully cultivated began to fracture.

Kian stepped beside her, his jaw locked. “She’s getting bolder.”

“She wants to remind us she’s watching,” Elena whispered. “She thinks she can scare me.”

Kian reached out and took her hand. “She doesn’t know what you’ve become.”

The next morning, Elena called a meeting—not just with legal advisors, but also with child psychologists and public relations specialists.

“We’re preparing for a custody war,” she told them.

One of the PR experts asked carefully, “Do you want to take this public? We could preempt her—control the narrative.”

“No,” Elena said. “Not yet. This isn’t about image. This is about protection. We’ll do this quietly… and thoroughly.”

Kian agreed. “Adriana plays with noise. We’ll win with silence.”

As the meeting ended, Elena stared out the window of the estate, Solara’s laughter floating up from the garden below.

“She’s mine too,” Adriana had said.

But Adriana was wrong.

Solara belonged to no one. She wasn’t a pawn or a prize. She was a future—one that Elena would shield with everything she had.

And in the distance, behind the clouds, a new storm gathered.
