Chapter 24
Chapter 24
DIANA THORTON
I inhale shakily and hug myself tightly as I stare out the window. It is dark and probably one the morning. Alex had returned from work about two hours ago to hit me with something I confusingly can't decide on.
Legal documents that state that I give La'Belle full rights to the patent in exchange for credit and compensation. I'm at crossroads because one way means that I get more money to eventually run away with my baby, and the other means that I will have to give up on that particular idea. It was one of the things I wanted to put in for the competition and while I have other backup ideas, it just didn't feel right to give it up to an undeserving jerk like Alexander.
In the end, I need the money more, and getting credit is a bonus that will make it easier for me to get investors in the future. I didn't want to make an impulse decision which was why I told him that I would give him an answer in the morning.
I sigh as I pull up in front of the table absentmindedly reaching for the jug of water. It's empty. I sigh again. Megan had told me that I could call her for anything I needed but doing that at this time of the night would make her hatred for me grow stronger.
She already hates me and I don't even know why. She might not say it, but the cold sound of her voice and face makes it evident. Or maybe, Alexander grew on her.
I leave my room to head to the kitchen. The house is indeed enormous and lonely. I really can't spend my entire day locked up in here.
I can't believe I used to envy those who live in mansions.
I walk down the long hallway and come across a door slightly ajar. It's Alexander's room. I can see him through the opening of the door. He's shirtless and looks...regular...harmless and just human. Sadly, all that changes the moment he opens his eyes and mouth.
I close the door tightly before heading to the kitchen for water.
*************"
It's a beautiful morning with the sun shining in it's glorious pride. I'm dressed in this exquisite floral slip dress as I race slowly down the hallway feeling extremely at peace. For the first time in a long time, I actually feel happy. I'm about to step into my room when I can't seem to find the door knob. It's like it didn't come with one. I turned to my right and all that seemed so bright became dark and the darkness was coming for me. Slowly seeping towards where I'm standing. I try to break the door open before the darkness engulfs me. I used my hands, and legs and even tried to look for any strong object, all to no avail.
"Megan!!!" I hear a voice scream out loud.
The voice was loud enough to jolt me out of my own nightmare. I wake up, panting, and hyperventilating. It's a dream. I touch my tummy and look around- it is still dark.
I pick up my phone to check the time - resisting the temptation to open Caroline and Celeste's text messages. It's a little after three in the morning.
I hear Alexander's voice echo into my room. It's deserted at this time of the night so sounds don't get filtered.
I tighten the drawstrings of my robe before heading outside to know what's wrong.
The atmosphere is tense as I take my place behind Megan who is standing beside the door frame of Alexander's room. Her head is hanging low. Alexander must have said some hurtful words to her.
"You're fired," He said, coldly.
My eyes bulge out open in shock. What did she do and who fires their worker by this time?
"I really didn't close the door, sir. I will leave first thing in the morning"
The door? The realization dawned on me. I closed his door and she's getting fired for it. I can't let that happen especially when it was me who did it.
"She didn't close the door," I say weakly as my voice almost fails me.
"I did" I added.
"You closed the door?" He asks again
"I was on my way to get water when I saw it open and figured it wasn't intentional of you to leave it open" I defensively say.
"Leave," He says to Megan and she leaves.
Before I know what's happening, Alexander grabs my hand and drags me into his suite before shutting the door.
My back is against the wall and he's only a kiss away from me. His eyes are searching for mine and the whole action made my body awaken.
"Were you spying on me? Looking for more dirt to use against me?" He says.
"No..I..simply closed...the door in goodwill" I stutter
I finally let my eyes land on his and for a few seconds, we stayed silent while looking at each other's eyes.
He is irritatingly handsome, even when he's angry. The hotness and tension make me want to kiss him badly.
"Get one thing straight, Ms. Thorton, don't ever cross the line. ever. again" His cold voice vanishes my sexual thoughts and fills them with contempt.
"Got it"
He lets me go and I head straight to my bedroom. I hope Megan is no longer fired. For someone who already hates me, I didn't want to give her another reason.
I run a hand through my hair, a sense of inexplicable confusion washing over me. He was going to fire her simply because he thought she closed the door to his room.
Or is there some sort of taboo I don't know about?
Glaring at my phone, I finally decide to text Caroline back. To make it easier, I open a WhatsApp group with just the three of us and start typing.
# Hi, I just want to say that I appreciate your concern for me. It's a good feeling to know that I can always count on you both.
# Yes, Alexander and I are both in love and we will be getting married. I know it's all spontaneous but love doesn't have a timeline. Once again, thank you for the heartfelt messages and I can't wait to see you at the wedding.
# Xo, Diana
After dropping the text, I turn my phone off and try to go back to sleep with just one resolution.
Alexander is a devil, a devil that I know and this facade and sham of a marriage, I will go through with it. I will be the perfect wife and have my baby. I will put up with his nonsense knowing that in the end, I will elope with my child.
I can't have someone like him raise my baby.
I just have to explain to my foster parents so they don't get the wrong idea of my immoral decision. They didn't raise me that way.
