Chapter 9 — Persistence

Jane's POV:

It's been a whole week since the roof incident. I've tried to talk to Luca a little to find out what's going on, but he would just ignore me and act like I didn't exist. This, of course, increased Sarah's confidence and smugness towards me. I swear, I'll never understand what I did to that girl for her to hate me so much.

It was Monday today and I was in my room getting ready for school. I felt like I was deprived of all my emotions and energy. Luca was the first real friend I had ever since I came here, but it looks like I lost him.

No. No. I won't allow it. I won't lose him without a proper explanation.

I left the house about thirty minutes later and started making my way to school. I was definitely going to get an explanation from Luca today and I won't let him go until I hear it, so with full determination, I surged into history class where I know Luca would be sitting right in front of me.

I folded the note I had for him and when Mr.Gressingham wasn't looking, I let slide down his shoulder. He reached for the paper that fell on his lap, opened it and read the words that I wrote him.

"You owe me an explanation."

He held his pen and proceed to write down a reply. It made me happy that he wasn't ignoring my note. Maybe it's because Sarah wasn't there.

He the paper back at me and I opened it to read his reply.

"I owe you nothing so stop coming after me." His reply pained me but I refused to be let down. I wrote down my reply.

"Yes I do. We were friends but then you suddenly decided that I wasn't worth it? At least tell me why you started hating me so much?" I was going to get that explanation out of him no matter what.

"You're not worthless Jane and I don't hate you."

"Then why tell sudden change?" I threw the paper back to him.

I heard him sigh. He bent down to write his reply.

"I just don't want us to be friends anymore."

"Why?"

"Because I just don't." His replies were frustrating me to no point.

"That's not an answer.

Luca tell me truthfully, did something happen with your parents?" I asked the question that I was dying to know the answer to.

I heard Luca suck in a breath. He didn't attempt to reply as he just crumpled the paper and placed it in his pocket. His actions made me a hundred—no, a hundred and one—percent sure that his parents had something to do with it. Rage was killing me alive when I thought about it.

I swear if I ever get the chance to lay my han—

My thoughts were cut short by the sound of the bell.
