Chapter 17 — Nuclear fission
Jane's POV:
I've heard someone say before that people are drawn to each other because their atoms were near each other when the universe was created and over time the atoms keep coming back together.
I don't know if this is a blessing or a curse, and what I'm feeling right now sure didn't help. Maybe Luca and I weren't meant to be together. Maybe his atoms were near Sarah's and mine were near someone else's. But if that's the case, then why does every fiber in me yearn for him? Why does it hurt so much to not be able to see his face or talk to him?
After the warm shower I was forced to take, I've tried calling Luca several times on his phone but he wouldn't answer. I guess he got tired of me calling him since it got turned off later.
My heart broke to pieces as reality sunk in, deep. The thought ran in my head but I didn't want to acknowledge it, however, it was still there.
I think Luca and I just broke up. He claimed that he wanted us to stay apart for my family and I's safety. I don't get though, we are already involved. And does he really think that after I knew about what happens in his house I'd just sit there and do nothing about it?
I splashed cold water on my tear-stained face. I didn't sleep last night at all, didn't even attempt to.
Looking in the mirror, I scared myself for a moment from how I look. My hair was all over the place, tangled to no end. I had dark bags under my eyes and bloodshot red eyes. My lips were whiter than usual and chapped. My cheeks sucked inside and seemed hallow. I looked no better than a zombie.
I guess I'll be needing a cold shower instead.
I stripped out of my clothes and hopped under the cold water. Being a normal human, I, of course, couldn't handle it and quickly turned on the heater.
The water eased my tensed muscles and after a while, I finally, stepped out.
I changed into black jeans and a purple, full-sleeved, dress that had black swirls on one side.
I put a scarf around my neck and a beanie on my head to cover up my messy hair. I wasn't in the mood to fix it today and I didn't bat an eyelash towards my rather small make-up set.
With an emotionless face, I went out of my room, grabbed a granola bar then left the house. I didn't want to talk to anybody and understanding my condition, my parents didn't attempt to talk to me. They know me too well to force me to talk when I emotionally can't.
With a deep breath, I started making my way towards the school.
Today is going to suck.
Entering the school's threshold, I didn't miss the over the usual commotion between the students.
Envy, awe, excitement, confusion and other different emotions swirled around me.
"Hey, what's going on?" I asked a girl as I went to my first class and took a seat. Her seat was next to mine which made it more convenient for us to talk.
"Oh, you don't know? Luca Hemington and Sarah Harding will be having their engagement party this weekend and everyone's invited. They say that there will be a lot of important people there, including celebrities and al—"
The girl kept on talking but I shut her out after the first line.
Luca and Sarah are getting engaged? This weekend?
I knew that his parents will do something but I didn't peg it to be this fast.
I was shocked and couldn't utter a single word.
"Morning class. To your seats please." Our maths teacher said as he entered the class.
No, no. This can't happen. I won't let it happen.
Other than me being in love with Luca and not wanting him to be with someone else, he is a human being. How could they do that to him? Treat him like some toy?
I had to do something, and I know exactly who can help me.
So leaving my seat and ignoring the teacher's calls and leave the classroom, I run towards the only person in the world that can save both Luca and I.
