Chapter 39 Impossible Rescue

Chapter 39 Impossible Rescue
Turns out we weren't just running from Helix anymore but from everything that wanted to own us.

I kept moving, one hand brushing the wall to support my stamina. The alarm didn't stop. It didn't fade into the background like it used to in Helix. These were different, they were fast and loud.

That alone told me everything I needed to know. It wasn't part of their plan. Whatever had just happened was expected according to their plans.

I stood in the center of the room, my breath was uneven, my body has gone through so much ever since the bond started. Zane stayed close to me. Closer than before, more protective now.

His hands stayed on my back, not touching me constantly, but never far. It was like he was ready to catch me if I fell.

“What’s wrong?” he asked me quietly.

I swallowed. “I can hear things,” I said.

Ruby looked at me immediately. “What are you hearing.?”

I shook my head slightly. “Not voices. Not exactly. It sounds like movement. Like something is coming outside this room.”

“That’s not normal,” Garrett's expression changed.

“No,” I said. “It’s not.”

Across from us, the man from Apex watched me with a completely different expression now.

He looked more interested in me. And to me, that was worse.

“Your response is quite amusing,” He said.

Zane flicked. “You don't get to study her.”

The man ignored him.

“You are trying to break your suppression level without full transformation? That’s unbelievable.” He smiled. “You are adapting faster than we anticipated.”

I let out my long compressed breath. “You keep saying things I don't understand,” I said. “Like I am something you discovered.

“Yes, you are.” The man's gaze sharpened.

Those words landed hard. Zane stepped forward again, slower this time. “Say that again.”

Weapons lifted instantly. This time, there was no hesitation. “Stay down.” The man ordered without looking away from me. No one lowered their weapons. That told me that he wasn't in control fully anymore.

Then I asked suddenly. “Who else is here?” He didn't expect the question. That made him tense. He hesitated just for a second but that was enough for me.

“You're not the only group watching us.” I continued. My voice became steady despite the tension. “You said that before, so tell me who else is coming?”

Another alarm rang. Closer this time but the tone was different from the previous one. The man turned slightly and went back to me.

“You will see them when they arrive.” He said.

Zane’s eyes narrowed. “Who.?”

The man didn't answer.

Ruby stepped closer to me. Whispering “We need to move. Whatever’s happening. We don't want to be here when it starts.”

“I agree.” Garrett nodded.

Zane didn't move. Not yet. His eyes were still locked on the man. “You said we weren't rescued, what is this then.?” Zane asked.

“A transfer of custody.” The man held his gaze.

The world hit like a punch. My stomach dropped. “Custody?” Ruby snapped. She could believe her eyes. I looked at Zane. His expression went cold. “Can you explain?”

“You were leaving one controlled environment,” he said. “Now you’re entering another,” he explained.

“That is not going to happen again.” Zane snapped.

“It’s already happening.”

The light flickered again. It was harder this time.

I felt it again. That pull, it went stronger now. Not from Zane but from someone else. My head turned slightly, my eyes narrowing.

“There,” I whispered.

Zane followed my gaze. “What.?”

“I don't know what it is but it is getting closer,” I said.

A sharp crack echoed through the chamber. Not from inside, but from above. Everyone froze. Then another came again, louder and closer this time. The ceiling shook. Dust falling from it. The armed security focus shifted from me to the ceiling, with their weapons aimed up.

“Report.” the man snapped.

A voice came in through his intercom hurriedly. “We have multiple breaches and we are losing control.”

The man’s jaw tightened. “How many?” he asked.

“It’s unknown sir. They aren't entering through the standard procedure.”

Zane’s lips shifted to the side slightly. “Good.”

My pulse raced fast because whatever was coming wasn't Helix nor the Apex. It was something else. And somehow I could feel it.

“Fall back to plan B.” the man ordered.

“No,” I shouted.

He looked at me. “You don't get to move me again.” I continued.

“You don't have a choice.” He said.

Zane stepped in beside me. “She does.”

The man's expression hardened. “You don't understand what’s coming.”

I shot back. “Then explain it.”

Another crack above us. Stronger. A visible split came across the ceiling.”

It occurred to me that time was running out.

“They are not here to contain you.” the man said finally.

I froze.

“They are here to take you,” he continued. “And they won't negotiate.”

Zane’s voice dropped. “Who are they?”

The man hesitated.

“A group that believes hybrids shouldn't exist,” he said.

Everywhere went silent.

Ruby’s breath caught. “Elimination group?”

Garrett's face hardened. “This is really serious.”

Zane couldn't speak.

“Then we leave,” I said.

“You won't make it in time.” The man shook his head.

Zane gave a dangerous smile. “Watch us.”

The ceiling fell. not completely but enough. A section collapsed inward, metal and concrete tearing apart as something forced its way through it. It wasn't careful, nor controlled but brutal. Weapons raised and firing before it even fully landed. Everything explodes into motion.

Zane moved first, he didn't think nor hesitate. He didn't fully shift but his claws, speed, and power. He was in control. He tore through the closest attacker before the second could adjust his aim. Blood hit the floor. The smell changed everything.

Garrett joined in,he was slow but precise. His experience guided his moves. Ruby pulled me back “Move!” but I didn't move. Not immediately.

My eyes were locked on the attackers. On the way they moved but my body was reacting not with fear but recognition. And that scared me even more.

“Nyla!” Zane shouted. That snapped me out of my thought.

I turned and asked Ruby. “Where is mum?”

But before she could answer, we heard gunfire. It was the Apex fighting back. But they were losing.

“We must move fast, they aren't here to capture, they're targeting you,” Ruby said, panic rising.

“I know,” I replied.

Zane caught up with us in seconds, there were traces of blood around his arms. He was trying to control his breath. “Let’s move,” he said. No one argued.

We ran through corridors that no longer felt controlled. Through rooms that were already breaking down. Behind us, the fight intensified. And ahead of us was uncertainty.

I felt it again. That pull is very close.

“Wait,” I said suddenly.

Zane grabbed my hands. “We can't stop now.”

“It’s something else, it’s not them,” I said.

“We don't have time Nyla.” Ruby snapped.

“Yes, we do,” I said.

Zane stopped not because he agreed but because something in my tone made him too.

“What is it?” He asked.

Then I turned slowly. Looking at the path that has collapsed. I feel something hidden.

“I think,” I said, my voice lowered and almost uncertain.

“I think it’s calling me.”

Another explosion shook the building.

Too close that forced Zane to make a decision. “ Then we find it.” He said.

“Are you serious?” Ruby stared at him.

“No, do you have any option?”

Garrett nodded once. “Then we move fast.”

We turned. Not towards the exit but towards the unknown.

Behind us, the building continued to fall and ahead of us something waited. Something that had felt me, even before I knew it existed.

And whatever it was, it wasn't done with me yet.
