Chapter 30

Chapter 30
Becoming the Nightmare

Whispers and invisible eyes filled the air whenever I hovered within the shadow world. Darkness pressed against my flesh, soaked into my pores, and became part of me. Each breath that I took seemed to be breathing in long-buried truths. I was encircled by the sounds of lost souls, but I was alone.

As I advanced, the earth beneath me changed, exposing a trail lit by a dim, unsettling light. Every stride evoked memories that were not mine, glimpses of struggles that had been fought and lost. I sensed their anguish, their anger, and their hopelessness. I was unable to stop, even though it was overwhelming.

From the shadows in front of them, a figure appeared, its shape constantly shifting. It communicated with me verbally, sending feelings and facts immediately into my head. I caught glimmers of my history, of times I had either forgotten or chosen to ignore. The deception, the manipulation, the treachery.

The person reached out and gave me an option. Either accept the darkness and become unmatched in power, or turn away and stay exposed. It was a huge temptation. I paused, caught between my potential and my current self.

I felt a sudden rush of energy that ignited every nerve ending in my body. My body trembled, changing in ways I couldn't explain. Sensations increased, muscles grew, and bones moved. I was evolving into a new, powerful entity.

After the change was complete, I felt unstoppable. I was no longer threatened by the shadows; they were under my control. Their horror, their queen, was me. However, this authority also brought with it a hunger, an unquenchable thirst for power.

I came out of the shadows and into the center of the Shadowfang property, bringing me back to the actual world. Warriors were fighting invisible enemies in a state of chaos. With a mixture of amazement and fear on their faces, they stopped when they saw me. The shadows obeyed my command to bring them down without question.

Jake's eyes met me as he stood in the middle of the chaos. He came carefully closer, feeling my transformation. As I extended my hand to touch his face, I saw the shaky connection between us. I was on the verge of being consumed by the evil inside me.

Dark magic warped Selena's shape as she emerged from the rubble of an explosion that rocked the property. She let out a wild laugh and said that the real nightmare had only just started. The shadows paused, unsure, but I was ready to face her. Doubt struck me for the first time.

I had been pushed back by the energy that Selena released, and as I fought to get back up, I became aware that I did not have complete authority over the darkness within me. It stoked my fears, sounded doubts, and threatened to make me turn against the people I loved. At what price had I become the nightmare? The distinction between savior and destroyer became hazy, and I began to doubt my future course.

The room shook and the darkness flinched, sensing my turmoil. I stood in the middle of the mayhem, my heart racing with a mixture of terror and resolve. Both a blessing and a curse, the power I had accepted threatened to consume me completely. It was time for me to be back in control.

I shut my eyes and concentrated my attention inward, searching for the light that was still inside of me. As the darkness grew, memories of friendship, love, and hope came to the surface. I rooted myself with every breath, not allowing the dreadful experience to describe who I was. Sensing my change in resolve, the shadows paused.

I opened my eyes as well and turned to Selena, who looked at me with a mix of intrigue and contempt. She moved forward, a throb of evil force coursing through her aura. I looked her in the eyes, unwavering, prepared to face the personification of my anxieties. This fight was against the shadowy recess inside of me as much as it was against her.

The chamber burst into a whirlpool of light and gloom as we collided. Every blow put my determination to the test in addition to driving me closer to the edge. But I refused to be engulfed, reaffirming who I was with each hit. I felt a surge of power that was a ray of hope rather than a nightmare.

I let out one more, scream, and a surge of energy swept over Selena, driving the darkness out of her body. She fell unconscious, the evil energy vanishing into thin air. Silence descended upon the chamber as the shadows withdrew into the corners of the realm. The war inside of me was far from ended, but I stood triumphant.

I was completely chilled as I started to go when I heard a whisper reverberating throughout the room. "The true nightmare has yet to begin." I hesitated, the words' weight pressing down on me. There was a fresh danger approaching that would put my entire being to the test.
