Chapter 24

Chapter 24
The Shadows Grow Stronger

I felt like the air around me had turned to lead, and the amount of weight of the shadows pushing down on me was oppressive. I could sense he was near. The ancient power that had been tugging the threads behind everything was called the Father. The thing that had distorted Kieran's thoughts ate him up. I was no longer even able to distinguish between Kieran and the darkness.

I was having trouble breathing. I was unable to think.

My body trembled with the sheer strength that now enveloped me, and my hands shook. However, I couldn't give up. I wouldn't. I wouldn't allow it to prevail. Not after everything.

I looked around, looking for any weakness, any way out. It felt like the world was skewed and distorted by something too big and strong to understand. Once solid beneath me, the ground now moved like liquid. The surrounding forest was no longer there. Everything was dark. A huge, unending space that goes on forever.

Then again, I saw him. Kieran. His eyes were wild with dread as the darkness continued to engulf him, and his expression was a mask of agony.

I whispered, "No, Kieran," but the wind was so loud that I was unable to perceive myself. I followed my instincts and moved before my head could follow. "I will not allow you to be taken."

Coiling approximately him like chains of icy night, the shadows tightened their hold. I was being smothered from all sides by the Father's presence, but I had trouble concentrating on that right now. I couldn't let my fear stop me. Not when Kieran was sinking into the abyss and lost himself.

I made my feet move, rushing in his direction while the ground shook under me. They were always there, always closing in, always reaching for me with their cold fingers, but the shadows separated as I forced my way through them.

Kieran's body jerked violently as if he were being torn apart from the inside out, and his eyes briefly met mine before the darkness swallowed him once again. He fought, but it didn't help. The Father was too powerful, too powerful. His voice cut through the confusion like a whisper in the wind.

"Lily, you can't save him. I now own him.

The sound of it made my heart tighten; it was deep, frigid, and ancient as if it had existed before everything I knew. My will was crushed by the weight of the words as they reverberated in my head.

But I had no intention of stopping. Not right now.

I felt an unexpected but unavoidable burst of power. The world itself seemed to be drawing on me from deep within, from a place that I had never known existed but had always been there. My wolf. The Shadow That Whispers. My bond with the darkness was alive and just awaited my acceptance.

Despite the suffocating weight of the shadows, I reached out to Kieran. However, the darkness twisted as I approached, drawing him further away and into a chasm that I was unable to follow. Like a reflection in broken glass, the world beneath us started to warp, and I lost my footing and stumbled.

With despair shivering up my spine, I thought, He's slipping away.

But suddenly, I sensed someone, something dragging me ahead in the shadows. Not Kieran. Not the father. But another thing. A familiar feeling

The shadows moved. Out of the emptiness, a shape appeared a silhouette, a person, cloaked in the same eerie quality as everything else. I sensed the eyes on me even though I couldn't see the face. Observing me.

The real master of the shadows I understood as the concept hit me like a lightning bolt.

Everything I believed to be true about Kieran, the shadow magic, and the darkness was destroyed in one instant.

The Father wasn't the only one in charge. Something older, darker than him, was hiding in the backdrop. And it was headed my way. For us all.

My instincts told me to run, to get away from this new, unknown peril, and I instinctively backed away. However, the truth could no longer be avoided. There was no escaping what was going on.

In the dim light, the figure's shape began to take shape as it approached. It was something between a human and a beast, familiar and alien all at once. The blackness was so profound that it appeared to engulf all surrounding light, leaving nothing but emptiness in its wake. I felt my knees tremble as it made another step toward me; its presence was oppressive and stifling.

I recognized him.  The initial one. Where the shadows came from.  The creator of the Father

My heart almost stopped at the thought. Everything seemed to have fallen into pandemonium as if the planet had swung on its axis. The shadows were expanding, becoming something greater than I could have ever dreamed, not merely increasing. And I was solely to blame.

The shadows swirled around the fingers of the hand that the figure held up. It was radiating strength, and I could feel it soaking like poison into my skin. However, I refused to back down. I had to. Before it swallowed us all, I had to figure out how to put an end to this.

However, the figure wasn't coming to murder me. No. It came here to give me an option.

"You are the key,"  the voice said, echoing in my head like the whisper of a faraway memory, but not out loud. "You possess the ability to put an end to this. There has always been an option for you. Make a decision now.

Confusion obscuring my thoughts, I shook my head. "What option?" I muttered, but I wasn't sure why. I had the answer beforehand. I was already aware that I had always made the decision. Since the beginning, this had been building to this point.

The figure's voice was like the crackling of thunder as it murmured, "Join us, Lily." Accept the power. Join the shadows as one. We shall change this world together. You already belong to our group. You were born with it.

My heart pounded. I couldn't seem to resist accepting the request for study participation, yet the phrases felt like a seduction. A part of me yearned for that strength, for the power that accompanied the darkness. The assurance of competence. Everything is promised.

However, a deeper aspect of me, something that had always existed but was concealed beneath the surface, knew the truth. I was unable to accept this. Not like this. Not this corruption.

However, a part of me worried that it was already too late even as I made that decision.

Waves of dark energy rippled through the air as the figure took another stride and the ground underneath it broke. As though the entire universe was being wrenched apart, the sky above us twisted, split between light and shadow.

Then I heard Kieran's voice again, broken and desperate, coming from behind me.

"Lily... Avoid... You have no idea what you're doing!

I spun around, but he was cut short by the barrier of shadows that had already developed between us. For a minute, I was unable to breathe as he vanished once more, engulfed by the darkness.

I was immobile.

What did I do? Panic rising in my chest, I thought.

And everything turned black as soon as I realized the full cost of my choice.
