Chapter 168: Ominous Feeling.
Chapter 168: Ominous Feeling.
Ruelle’s POV
“Are you sure no one saw you coming and going?” I ask the guard that I sent to monitor today’s brawl for the umpteenth time. It is the third day of the brawl and just like our routine, he hides beneath foreign clothing and goes to bring me news of how the brawl is going.
“No my lady. I have made sure to be careful coming in and out.”
So far, both the brawls and my undercover operations have been successful, but for some reason, I just can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong.
Carlos had sent word earlier to inform that he might be stopping by tomorrow, and while that should add to the ominous feeling that I get concerning being caught watching the brawl through a guard— I simply sent him back a message to try to convince Thorne to come as well.
I imagined he must have snorted out one of those humorless laughs upon receiving my message. But I cannot find it in me to care. I excuse the guard, who eventually departs from kneeling at my feet. Morra is the next to offer me her company. I have not missed how overly present she has been lately, as though she doesn’t want me to be alone.
“My lady, you haven’t touched your food yet”. She scolds softly, giving me an incredulous look.
Even I am impressed and amazed by myself. Surviving on only one meal a day and less than tiny hours of sleep, I still have so much energy and barely any appetite.
“I’m not hungry.” I tell her and she hangs her head, walking towards me with her shoulders sagging.
“My lady, I have been pouring my heart out into the meals I have been cooking for you with the chef lately. And also, if you are not hungry then your baby might be.”
She walks into the dining room and grabs the tray of food, bringing it into the sitting room and placing it beside me on the couch, the look in her eyes is pleading, filling me with guilt. “Just a few bites, my lady. Please.”
I oblige, forcing myself to chew on the bites of food that do not appeal to me in any way because I would hate to make Morra waste her precious time and skills. But even as I swallow the tiny bites of food that I entice myself with, a thought repeatedly pops into my head.
My father is seemingly trying everything possible to bring the Ironclaw clan down, knowing fully well that this is my clan now.
It is proving more and more difficult by the second to just sit and do nothing. Both the letter that Thorne had told me about, and now this, sending another army to finish him off. It is getting increasingly hard to not do anything about it.
My father may not be the best person today, but there has to still be an atom of the man who loved and preserved me all these years inside of him.
“Morra?” I call, my hand resting against my face. “How possible is it to sneak out of here and be back in one day?”
Her eyes are wide. The spoon in her hand hanging mid air. She blinks herself out of the trance her shock sent her to, looking around. “Uh… here— I’m not sure, my lady. Why… I’m not sure that is a very good idea.” She stammers.
“Good idea or not. Is it possible?”
She holds my gaze, pleading with her eyes. When she sees my seriousness, she finally nods her head. “Yes, my lady. It is.” She drops the spoon. “Where would you want to go?”
“I need to see my father.”
