Chapter 24: The Mountain Bleeds
Chapter 24: The Mountain Bleeds
The Hierophant’s shriek of desperate fury was nearly lost in the groan of tortured rock. His final, spiteful attack slammed into the base of the great spire. Cracks exploded outwards, racing up the monolithic structure like black veins. The ground beneath us bucked and roared. The entire spire, the focal point of the ritual, the anchor for the volatile energies gathered there, began to fall.
Instinct took over. There was no time for conscious thought, only reaction honed by Anya’s training and sheer survival desperation. Even as the colossal spire tilted, casting a terrifying, world-ending shadow over the basin, Anya slammed the butt of her glowing staff onto the trembling ground at her feet. "Elara! Shield!" she yelled, her voice barely audible over the cacophony.
A bubble of shimmering white light flared outwards from the staff, enveloping Anya just as I threw my last dregs of power into creating a ragged dome of shadow over myself, instinctively tucking my head down, bracing for impact.
The spire came down with a noise that defied description – a deafening, grinding roar that shook the very foundations of the mountains. It didn’t just fall; it shattered, exploding into boulders the size of huts and countless smaller fragments. A shockwave ripped through the valley, carrying a hurricane of dust, rock shrapnel, and raw, untamed magic.
My shadow shield evaporated instantly, offering pitifully little protection. I felt impacts like hammer blows against my back and limbs as debris rained down. Anya’s light shield flickered violently, holding against the initial onslaught but visibly straining. The ground split open nearby, venting steam and spitting arcs of multicoloured energy. The raw magic of the Serpent's Tooth, wounded and enraged by the Hierophant's meddling and the ritual's catastrophic collapse, was lashing out blindly.
And the Hierophant?
Caught near the base of the collapsing spire, directly in the path of the structure's disintegration and the eruption of primal power from the shattered nexus point, he didn't stand a chance. I caught a final glimpse of his ancient, lich-like face, contorted not just in fury but in terror, as a wave of pure, incandescent chaos – the raw blood-magic of the mountain itself – surged up from the fractured earth and engulfed him.
There was no explosion, no final defiant cry. He simply… ceased to be. Consumed, unmade, disintegrated by the very power he had sought to command. A fitting, terrifying end for a creature fueled by stolen life and parasitic magic. His chilling aura vanished from the world, leaving behind only the raging chaos of the mountain's unleashed power.
Then, as suddenly as it began, the most violent phase of the collapse subsided. The ground still trembled, residual magic still sparked erratically, and dust choked the air, but the immediate, overwhelming cataclysm passed.
Coughing, bruised, bleeding from a dozen minor cuts and the reopened wound on my leg, I pushed myself up from the rubble. My body screamed in protest. Every muscle felt torn, every bone jarred. My shadow power was a faint, flickering ember deep inside, almost extinguished.
Through the thick haze of dust, I saw Anya’s light shield fade. She stood leaning heavily on her staff, her breathing ragged, her face pale with exhaustion and pain, but alive. Alive.
Relief, potent and overwhelming, washed through me, making my knees weak. We stumbled towards each other through the settling dust and debris, meeting halfway. She gripped my arm, her hand surprisingly strong, offering support even as she swayed on her feet.
"You're alive," I choked out, the words thick with dust and emotion.
"As are you, little shadow," she replied, her voice raspy. She looked towards the place where the Hierophant had vanished. "He is gone. Consumed by the forces he tried to enslave." A grim satisfaction touched her features. "The mountain always demands its price."
We stood there for a moment, leaning on each other, surveying the utter devastation. The valley floor was a ruin of shattered rock, smoking fissures, and crackling residual energy. The ritual circle was obliterated. The spire was gone, replaced by a jagged crater still spitting chaotic magic. Most of the Purist soldiers and acolytes were either dead or buried. The immediate threat from the Hierophant and his forces was well and truly over.
But the cost had been immense. Anya was injured, her light visibly dimmer now. I felt shattered, physically and magically depleted. And the valley itself felt… poisoned. The wild magic, though less explosive now, still writhed in the air, making the place feel unstable and deeply dangerous.
"We need to leave," Anya stated, echoing my thoughts. "Now. Before the mountain settles, or before whatever remains of the Purists outside this valley realizes what happened here."
Nodding, wincing as pain shot up my leg, I agreed. We needed safety, healing, time to recover. And time to figure out what came next. The Hierophant was gone, but were his Purists truly scattered? What had happened at Blackstone Citadel? Was Rhys…?
As that thought surfaced, something faint flickered within me. Not pain this time. Not a cry for help. Just… a steady, quiet pulse. An awareness. Distant, weak, but undeniably there. It felt like the faintest echo of a stable heartbeat across the miles.
Rhys.
He was alive. The knowledge settled into my weary mind, not with joy or relief, but with a profound, complicated exhaustion. He had survived the Purists' trap. Perhaps my desperate pulse of energy had helped, perhaps not. It didn't change what he'd done, how he'd rejected me. But he was alive. The broken bond, it seemed, still held echoes of life as well as pain.
It was another complication I didn't have the strength to process right now. Survival came first.
"Help me," I murmured to Anya, gesturing towards the easiest slope leading out of the devastated basin.
Together, supporting each other, two battered survivors against a backdrop of apocalyptic destruction, we began the slow, agonizing climb out of the Serpent's Tooth valley. We left behind the remnants of a shattered ritual, the unmade dust of the Hierophant, and the volatile, bleeding magic of the wounded mountain. Ahead lay an unknown path, unanswered questions, and the daunting task of navigating a world irrevocably changed by the events of this night. The climax was over, but the fallout was just beginning.
