Chapter 20: An Alpha's Echo
Chapter 20: An Alpha's Echo
Silver-tipped death hissed towards me from multiple directions. The Hierophant gathered the unstable, sickly yellow-green energy of the wounded ritual, his dark cowl radiating pure, focused malevolence. There was no escape. No time to think. Only instinct remained.
Shadows exploded outwards from me, not as a shield this time, but as grasping, semi-solid tendrils. They met the incoming crossbow bolts mid-air. Some bolts punched through, but others were deflected, spinning harmlessly off course. One grazed my thigh, a searing line of agony that sent jolts up my leg, but it wasn't a killing blow. I threw myself sideways, rolling behind another cluster of jagged rocks just as the Hierophant unleashed his fury.
A wave of pure chaos slammed into the rocks where I'd been. It wasn't the focused beam of before, but a roiling tide of volatile green-yellow energy, spitting sparks, tearing at the very fabric of reality. The stone screamed, cracking and spitting fragments. The ground buckled. Even meters away, hiding desperately behind my new cover, the heat was intense, the chaotic energy making my teeth vibrate and my vision swim. It felt like standing too close to a star going supernova.
He was toying with me no longer. This was raw, unrestrained power, amplified by the ritual and fueled by his rage at my interference. Another blast like that, even a near miss, and I wouldn't survive. The guards were advancing steadily now, fanning out, their silver-tipped weapons glinting, ready to pincushion me the moment I showed myself.
Trapped. Injured. Drained. Cornered. This was the end. My desperate gamble had bought the ritual mere moments, had perhaps further destabilized it, but it had sealed my own fate. Grief for Anya, sharp and suffocating, mingled with defiant fury. No. I will not die cowering.
As the Hierophant raised his hands again, gathering another wave of that terrifying, chaotic energy, preparing the final, overwhelming blow, something shifted.
It wasn't external. It was deep within me, where the broken bond with Rhys had echoed his pain earlier. But this was different. This wasn't pain. It was… power. Fierce, untamed, blazing with protective fury and absolute command. It surged through the frayed thread of the bond, an utterly unexpected reinforcement. It wasn't my power; it felt distinctly other, primal, stamped with the undeniable signature of an Alpha King roused to territorial rage.
Rhys.
It was an echo, a resonance, perhaps triggered by my earlier pulse sent to him, or perhaps by the sheer life-threatening peril I now faced, somehow bridging the gap once more. It flooded my senses – not his thoughts, not his presence, but the raw intent behind his power: Mine. Protect. Defend.
The surge wasn't directed at me, but flowed through me, radiating outwards for a split second like an invisible shield, slamming into the Hierophant's own concentration.
On the platform, the Hierophant actually recoiled. His gathered energy flickered violently. He staggered back a step, his head snapping up as if struck by an unseen force. His focus, absolute moments before, was shattered. He seemed momentarily stunned, confused, trying to pinpoint the source of this interfering Alpha energy that had seemingly erupted from nowhere, challenging his dominance within his own ritual.
It was only an instant. A heartbeat. But in battle, an instant can be everything.
The guards faltered, sensing the shift in their master's power. My opening.
Ignoring the fire in my leg, the ache in my body, the sheer impossibility of it all, I acted. All the pain, the fear, the grief, the fury, the echo of Rhys’s protective rage – I channeled it all into one final, desperate act.
I didn't target the Hierophant's hand this time. I targeted the ritual's heart.
Gathering every remaining shred of shadow, augmented by the residual Alpha energy thrumming through me, I flung it not as a blade, but as a concentrated spear of pure disruptive force aimed directly at the spire-like rock formation at the very center of the circle – the focal point drawing and presumably intended to channel the ritual's energy.
The spear of darkness crossed the distance in a silent rush. It struck the base of the spire with an impact that shook the entire valley.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, hairline cracks spiderwebbed outwards from the point of impact. The green light of the circle flared blindingly bright, then sputtered, turning an angry, unstable red. The humming drone of the ritual became a discordant shriek. The ground beneath the spire groaned, protesting the abuse.
The Hierophant roared, a sound of pure fury and frustration, realizing what I had done. He abandoned his attack on me, turning his full attention to stabilizing the rapidly destabilizing ritual, his hands moving in frantic, complex patterns, trying to regain control of the chaotic forces I had unleashed.
I had struck a critical blow. The ritual was failing, spiraling out of control.
But the effort had taken everything I had left. Channeling my own power, plus the unexpected surge of Rhys's echo, left me utterly depleted. My vision blurred. The strength went out of my legs. I collapsed behind the rocks, my injured leg screaming in protest, my body trembling uncontrollably.
Through swimming vision, I saw the guards recovering from their confusion, now advancing on my position with renewed determination, their faces grim. I saw the Hierophant fighting desperately to contain the chaotic energies threatening to tear his ritual apart, his attention momentarily diverted but his power still immense.
I was alive. The ritual was failing. But I was injured, drained, and helpless as enemies closed in. My desperate act had changed the battlefield, but victory – or even survival – felt impossibly far away.
