Chapter twenty-six
It was only four hours left before the dragons would arrive and already my palms were sweaty.
“It was very nice of Alpha Kurt to send some worriers with us,” I whispered to Lucian who stood, leaning on the hood of the car that had brought us here.
He didn’t say anything and just looked with darting eyes at the grey sky, his arms crossed over his chest.
Under normal circumstances, I would have been scared of the man next to me and trembled with fear.
But I wasn’t afraid of Lucian.
Even though there was over a dozen dragon picking us up, I still didn’t feel the fear that a normal wolf would have experienced.
“If we are not taking the car, and the dragons are flying here, how on earth are we going to get there? Ride their back?” I gave an awkward laugh and Lucian’s head snapped in my direction.
His eyes were yellow, meaning his Wolf/Dragon was fighting for dominance and I swallowed, standing my ground as his eyes snaked over me.
The quiet air was broken by the loud screeching of a Dragon’s roar and everyone looked up at the dragons making their way through the dark clouds.
“They are three and a half hours early,” I whispered, and I heard Lucian mumble something about his father always being on time.
I’d never seen a dragon up close, only read about it in books. These dragons were absolutely beautiful.
The leader was a sapphire blue dragon with scales in a circular motion. I remember reading that no two dragons had the same pattern scales unless, of course, they were born of the same fire.
You see, the dragons in the Dragon Kingdom were immune to fire, even in their human form.
So, to make sure all dragons were strong worriers, the two dragon parents would conceive the child in a special fire that the wizards would prepare for them.
Normally, there is only one dragon baby per pair of parents but in rare cases, two will be born from that same flame. The saddest thing was that the weaker two of the dragon twins were put down and sentenced to death.
I didn’t understand the dragon ways, but the Dragons never understood our werewolf ways either, so I didn’t dwell too much over the loss of dragon babies.
Only four of the dragons landed and I saw they pulled a beautiful silver carriage. A young man, not much older than Lucian opened the door for us.
I looked at Lucian and I knew he saw the fear in my eyes and wrapped his arm around my waist.
“Mate’s wolf says not to worry too much and that everything will be okay,” my wolf said, and I hesitated at the steps to the carriage.
I could feel a sheen of sweat covered my face.
“His highness would like it if you could keep on schedule.” The young man said, with a smile that sent uncomfortable shivers down my spine.
Lucian’s jaw locked and he held my waist from behind me. He pressed himself against me, so I felt more safe and secure.
“Come, Tessa, the quicker we get going the quicker we can get back to living our lives,” he said softly in my ear.
“Okay. I can do this,” I mumbled, trying to convince myself more than anything else.
I closed my eyes and took a big step up into the carriage, with Lucian’s help.
Someone had grabbed our overnight bags and thrown them on one of the dragon’s back.
Poor thing.
I thought to myself as I sat on the red velvet chair and Lucian sat next closely next to me.
“We’ll reach Dragon lands in ten hours so please, get comfortable,” the man said and with the click of his fingers, a table popped up with all kinds of pastries and chocolates alongside some hot and cold beverages.
A wizard. On my god, I’m sitting in the same carriage as a wizard.
I opened my mouth to say something, but Lucian gave my thigh a little squeeze.
His lips moved to my ear.
“These are dangerous people, Tessa. Don’t speak unless spoken to. Understand me?” he said, and his breath blew over my ear, making my body react in different ways.
I nodded slowly and placed my soft hand on his, lacing our fingers together.
“Good,” he whispered and reached over for a small chocolate and held it to my mouth.
I took a bite of the chocolate, never taking my eyes from his, trying to figure out what he was doing because this wasn’t like my Lucian that I knew.
I chewed the chocolate slowly, tasting its smooth flavor. I tasted the faintest of whiskey in the center of the chocolate.
I’d never been a drinker. The only alcohol I’d ever tasted when it had been on Lucian’s lips and even that wasn’t enough to call it a drink.
After a few minutes, I began feeling very happy and my body felt light.
I smiled lazily and looked over to Lucian who was looking somewhere distant with a frown on his face.
“Why you so cwoss?” My voice slurred and instantly my wolf wanted to take over because she could sense something wasn’t right.
“What’s going on?” my wolf asked, and her voice faded somewhere into the distance too far for me to reach.
“Ha ha. My big woofie is so cuute,” I said, poking his nose and bubbled up with laughter. Lucian looked at me with absolute confusion and then his aura changed into a dark red.
“What did your chefs put in the chocolates?” he said, his voice low and dangerous.
The other man smiled, and his eyes flashed a green color for only a split second.
“Goddess. I swear if you don’t—” Lucian began to rise and I knew, behind all the odd feelings, he was serious.
“Lucian,” I said, placing my hand on his tense arm. “It’s not worth it,” I whispered and looked at his eyes through my hazy one.
He sat down again and grabbed my face in his hands and looked at me, searching my eyes for something.
“Sleep, Tessa. The drugs will wear off.” He whispered and pecked my lips softly as I frowned.
“It’s don’t take drugs,” I said in defense.
“I know.” He murmured and spoke a word in a language not familiar to me (and I know a lot).
With that one word, I crashed against him and the world around me got sucked into a black vastness as far as the eyes could see.
The last thing I heard was Lucian’s soft voice in the distance whispering, “Sleep, little mate.”
