Chapter 108 — Healed at last

DEVYN’S POV.

Amidst the overwhelming pain flowing through me, poisoning my veins, and killing my heart, Gina’s voice coming from outside the door was the most unbearable agony. I could hear how she desperately pounded on the door, imagining how wounded her fists were.

Yet, I couldn’t allow her in. She would try to take the pain away from me, not even caring how much it hurt; that was just how selfless she was.

I didn’t want her to suffer for me, because I believed this was what I deserved.

Gritting my teeth against the surging pain, I forced myself to open my eyes. The palms on my chest radiated warmth and I figured they were trying to heal me. My vision blurred as I slipped in and out of consciousness, but I could make out the blonde woman standing in front of me, her eyes reflecting sadness as she gazed at me.

“You sent her out because you don’t want her to suffer,” she muttered, “You’re a good man.”

I would've responded but I couldn’t speak.

If only she knew.

Maybe there was really some good in me like Gina said, but the bad overshadowed the good.

I thought of my mother, maybe because I was on the verge of death. I hoped she would forgive me, because deep down, if I had known killing my father would make her lose her insanity, that wouldn't have stopped me.

Gina didn’t know that, and I never bothered to tell her. That was something I would keep to myself till I die.

And if things didn't go well today would be the die I'd die.

I couldn’t let Gina see me like this.

I needed the healing to go faster so I could meet Gina, and apologize for sending her out like that. I longed to see her beautiful face light up as she beamed at me, to kiss those enchanting lips, and run my fingers through her luscious hair,

I was dying and all I could think of was her.

My eyes tried to close, but I fought to keep them open. I feared death would take me if I did, and that would mean leaving Gina behind. I needed to live for her.

Gina stopped pounding on the door and a sense of tension gripped me as I heard her cries. My jaw clenched and I shot a glare at one of the women, hoping they could read the message in my eyes; How long was this going to take?

Gradually, the pain began to subside, though it lingered, still intense. It was an improvement from moments before.

Time passed, and I wasn't sure how long it took.

“We’re almost done. All traces of the poison in your body are almost gone,” the blonde said as if reading my impatience.

I could feel my wounds gradually closing.

The pain started to fade away and I could open my eyes wider. I needed to see if I could move my body, as I tried to raise my left hand. One of the women healing me flinched when my hand shot up slowly, and I didn’t understand why.

My hand trembled as I moved it, but as it got into my line of vision, I could see the darkness had already left my hand, revealing my skin with blood pulsing through my veins.

When it was finally over, exhaustion swept over me, and sleep tugged at my eyelids. I resisted it because I had a lingering need.

The healers looked just as exhausted as I was, and I could tell healing me had been a difficult task for them.

Despite my sore muscles and fatigue, I could move better as I turned to the blonde woman.

in a hoarse voice, I uttered, “Gina, I need her,” my throat was parched but my words were clear.

She nodded, “I’ll bring her in now.”

my focus remained on her, watching as she moved to open the door, as my heart quickened with anticipation. As the door opened, a wave of emotions hit me at the sight of Gina. She was seated on the floor, her eyes red and swollen from crying. When our gazes locked, my heart leaped to my throat, a mix of emotions flooding through me.

My chest heaved rapidly as my heart raced, causing a dull ache in my ribcage.

I was eager to get off the bed and pull her Gina off the ground, with my arms wrapped around her protectively. But she got to me first.

She looked tired, but her relief dominated her fatigued expression.

“Let’s leave them alone,” the blonde woman got the hint and everyone else followed after her.

When the door shut, Gina looked down at me, caressing my face as her eyes glistened with tears.

Impatient, I propelled myself forward with as much strength as I could muster and sat up straight on the bed till my legs touched the ground. The fabric wrapped around me dropped to my waist, barely covering anything upward.

“Are you sure you’re strong enough--” I cut her off as I wrapped my arms around her slim waist, pulling her close to my chest. The sudden movement made her yelp, and I almost chuckled.

She didn't struggle as I lifted her into my arms my muscles burning, till we were both lying on the bed. I made sure we faced each other, so her face would be the last thing I’d see before I drifted off to sleep.

My hands never let go of her waist as I gazed into her enchanting eyes.

“You don't need me anymore, Devyn. You threw me out.”

I froze, and the fragility in her tone made my heart shatter more than I thought it would.

Trailing her face, I spoke, “I need you more than the air I breathe, Gina. Don’t ever doubt that. I'm sorry I threw you out but the pain was agonizing. I couldn’t let you take it all for me. I can’t punish you like that.”

Her features softened and a tear slid down her eyes. I wiped it away.

“I'm glad you're alive. I don't know what I would have done if I lost you.”

Leaning in, I pressed a kiss on her forehead and pulled her closer till I could feel every part of her delicate skin on mine. I placed my throbbing head on her bosom, relishing in her warmth and sweet scent.

As she ran her fingers through my hair, I went to sleep.
