Chapter Thirty-Six: Miracles

I fell asleep in Demetri’s arms and when I woke up in the morning… he was in my bed.

I got out of bed and opened the door to Gabriel’s room. He was sound asleep in his bed. I walked to my bed and got back in. It was still early so I had some extra time before work. Demetri instantly pulled me against him, wrapping his heavy body around mine. My entire body felt a submissive pleasure. I chose to enjoy it instead of fighting myself.

This would be how my mornings would start if we were together…

I was so relaxed I nearly fell back to sleep but thanks to my alarm, I was wide awake. I reached for my phone on my nightstand and turned the alarm off. Demetri raised his head as he woke up. “How long have you been awake?” he asked, his sleepy deep voice was sexy.

“My alarm woke me up,” I said, pushing myself away from him. “You’re in my bed because…?”

He didn’t buy my lie but let it go and chuckled at my question. “When I brought you to bed last night you wouldn’t let go so I just got in with you,” he answered as he sat up. “Is that okay with you?”

“Mm-hm.” I sat up and scooted to the edge of the bed. “Thanks for being there for me last night. Adam got my hopes up when he said my dad should wake up during the next full moon.” I paused and looked at Demetri, pain in my eyes. “What if he never wakes up?”

“He’ll wake up Frey,” Demetri said, putting his hand on mine. “I can bring in a mage who specializes in healing magic.”

A lot of magic elixirs and enchanted equipment were already being used, not sure if direct sorcery could do much more. My father was extremely close to death in the beginning, magic and medicine have already done so much. My ability was supposed to be the icing on the cake to bring him out of this.

I didn’t want to take my hand away from Demetri’s but I had to get up and get ready for work. “You can go now,” I said. “I need to take a shower.”

Demetri left and I forced myself into starting my day.

“Mommy I’m ready,” Gabriel said when he came into my room and I was ready for the day. He managed to get himself dressed, his shirt and shorts weren’t the best match but I let him keep on the clothes he chose. At least his shirt wasn’t on backward like last time.

When I left the room with Gabriel Rose was waiting right outside of it. “Hey,” she said and looked at Gabriel. “Hi, we haven’t officially met yet, I’m your mommy’s sister.” I wish she hadn’t said that because it left me with a million questions I’d have to answer from Gabriel later on.

“You were at that party last night,” Gabriel said.

Rose nodded and looked at me. “Where are you headed?”

“I’m taking him to daycare before I go to work.”

“I’ll take him for you and hang around for a little while so I can spend some time with my nephew.” She was really leaning into this family thing.

Gabriel looked up at me and I nodded, giving him a little push. Rose smiled and I watched them go down the stairs.

On my way to work, I received a lot of smiles and greetings. Everyone must have been associating me with the way I made them feel during the full moon. It was nice to be appreciated and by a pack that used to hate me. I checked my phone and saw Mom called me about fifteen times in the last hour but I didn’t bother calling her back. I was ready to talk to her but in person.

When I walked into the infirmary Adam’s new nurse Tony greeted me. “You should go see your father before you start your shift.” I couldn’t, I was too disappointed that nothing happened last night. “He’s been asking for you.”

Asking for me???

I perked up and asked, “Wait, he’s awake??”

Tony nodded. “You didn’t know? Your father made a miraculous recovery, no doubt thanks to your power.” Dad was awake. I moved as fast as I could.

I opened the door and it was true, he was really awake.

“Freya,” Dad said with a smile.

I ran to him, practically diving into his hospital bed, hugging him as tightly as I could. “Thank you for fighting for me but please promise me you won't do something like that again.”

Dad shook his head and said, “Can’t promise that baby girl.”

Doctor Hoffer gave me as much time as I needed with Dad. The whole time I had to act like everything was okay between me and Mom. It wasn’t easy because I wanted to yell at her and there were so many questions I wanted to ask. At moments I think Dad picked up on my animosity and the strain between us. It was just like him to stay out of it and act like he didn’t notice anything.

When Dad was discharged he went to his and mom’s room with her. I started working in a great mood. Was everything actually going good for me again? Aside from the truth about my adoption of course.

After work, I changed into casual clothes and went on a nice long run. At the end of the trail, I came across Caleb who was napping by the lake. I walked to him and nudged his head with mine. Caleb raised his head as he woke up and got up to gently push me down with him. My wolf howled and he howled along. We were lying there together for a while and Caleb licked my furr every now and then.

It was serene.

Demetri shifted into his human form as I did and he watched me intently as I took my shirt and skirt off. I tossed my clothes against the trunk of the tree we were under and smiled at Demetri before jumping into the cold lake like a canon ball.

When I came back up to the surface and wiped my face I looked at Demetri who was amused. He shook his head and I pouted, wanting him to join me. It only took a few seconds for him to give in to me.

After taking his shirt and jeans off he got in and swam to me. “I like seeing you this happy,” he said.

My smile only brightened. “Sorry, you’ve mostly seen me angry and sad since I’ve been back.”

Demetri shrugged. “That’s fine, it was mostly my fault but I’m hoping to only put smiles on your face from now on.” I could tell he was holding back from saying something else that wasn’t completely appropriate. “You were dealing with a lot with your father before so I was waiting to mention our kiss. You didn’t completely shut me down. Am I any closer to making you my luna?”

I was still wrapping my head around the love thing…

I floated around him as I spoke. “What if I don’t want to be Luna?” I asked. “I love working in the infirmary and you said you wouldn’t want me to be pressured to be Luna if I didn’t want to be. That’s why things happened the way they did.” Was it all for nothing?

Demetri’s eyes drifted off to the side thoughtfully. “I assumed things were different since you made it seem like you wanted to be Alpha’s Fallon’s Luna.”

I stopped in front of him. “That was when it was my only option,” I explained. “When you brought me back you gave me more choices Demetri.”

Demetri’s eyes made their way back to mine and they were more focused than before. The way he looked at me made me feel frail yet significant. “That was my intention, I want you to have choices. We can still be together, you don’t have to be Luna, we don’t even have to mate. You said yourself we could have figured this out, let's figure it out now.”

I got out of the lake and Demetri followed, waiting for my answer.

“I need some time to think about it,” I said without looking at him because it was hard enough to say no but I had to think about how much I could trust him.

We dried off before putting our clothes back on. Demetri suggested that we go get Gabriel and have dinner together in the dining hall. I wanted to check on Rose first and Demetri stayed with me.

Rose wasn’t in her room so we looked around for her.

When I looked into one of the lounges my eyes set on Rose who was sitting with Noah’s brother Cameron. She waved when she saw me and gestured for me to come over. Demetri stayed by the door for me.

Cameron was already getting up and walking, gone by the time I sat down next to her on one of the couches. “Hey, what’s up?”

Rose smiled at me and pulled her phone out. “I found something.” She showed me a picture of a woman holding a baby. “That’s you with Mom,” she said and stared at me, expecting me to react. “And this is Dad,” she said as she swiped to the right.

I didn’t know how she wanted me to react, those pictures made me feel… bad if anything. I felt bad that they had their daughter taken from them and that felt more connected to my adopted family. “Do you miss your Dad?” I asked.

Rose shrugged. “It doesn’t matter, he’s not who I thought he was. Right now I just want to be with you.”

We looked up at Demetri has he came up to us with a serious look on his face. “The Cold Lightning Pack is on their way to retrieve Rose,” he announced.

Rose shook her head vigorously. “I’m not going,” she said quickly. “I Rose Walker, Resign from the Cold Lightning Pack.”
