Chapter 21 Bonding Ritual Preparation
Chapter 21 Bonding Ritual Preparation
Reality was bending around Aria like broken glass, and Luna's grandma was screaming. After two thousand years of guarding old secrets, I knew this was the moment everything would change forever.
"Stop her!" the grandma shrieked, pointing at little Aria. "Don't let her complete the awakening!"
But it was too late. Golden light poured from the three-year-old as she finally accessed her full Reality Shifter inheritance. The power rolling off her made the Hunger Lords step back nervously.
"Elder Moonwhisper," Luna called desperately. "What's happening to my daughter?"
I wanted to comfort her, but there wasn't time for gentle answers. The truth was too dangerous and too important.
"She's not just awakening her powers," I said quickly. "She's waking yours. Luna, you've been suppressing your true abilities your entire life because your grandmother put mental blocks on you as a child."
"What blocks?"
"The kind that make you think you're weak when you're actually the most powerful Reality Shifter in existence."
Through their soul-bond, I felt Damon and Marcus's shock mixed with Luna's confusion. They had no idea what they were really dealing with.
"That's impossible," Luna said. "I can barely heal people. Grandmother can change entire realities."
"Your grandmother can manipulate what already exists," I corrected urgently. "But you, Luna - you can make entirely new realities from nothing. That's why she's afraid of you completing the tri-bond."
The grandmother's screaming stopped abruptly, and she started chanting in words that made my ancient bones ache.
"She's starting a reality lock," I gasped. "If she completes it, none of you will be able to access your true powers ever again."
"How do we stop her?" Damon demanded.
"You finish the bonding ritual. Right now. Before she can finish the lock."
All three of them stared at me like I'd lost my mind.
"Elder," Marcus said carefully, "didn't you once tell me that bonding practices take days of preparation? That one mistake could kill everyone involved?"
"Under normal circumstances, yes," I admitted. "But these aren't normal circumstances."
I looked at the chaos around us - Hunger Lords waiting hungrily, Void Beings circling like vultures, the grandmother's reality lock getting stronger by the second, and little Aria glowing with power that was reshaping the landscape.
"The emergency bonding ritual is different," I explained quickly. "Faster, but infinitely more dangerous. Instead of days of careful planning, you have minutes of pure instinct."
"What does that mean?" Luna asked, still holding her beautiful daughter.
"It means you have to trust each other completely," I said. "No questions, no fears, no holding back. If any of you hesitate for even a second during the ritual, the magical backlash will either kill you quickly or leave you insane for the rest of your lives."
Through their bond, I felt their fear spike.
"There's something else," I continued, hating that I had to make this worse. "The emergency ritual requires a blood sacrifice from each participant."
"What kind of blood sacrifice?" Damon asked sadly.
"You each have to give up something that keeps you alive."
They stared at me in fear.
"I don't mean cutting your finger," I explained quickly. "I mean forever sacrificing a piece of your life force. Damon, you'd give up ten years of your normal lifespan. Marcus, you'd give up your ability to heal yourself. Luna, you'd give up your emotional link to fear."
"That doesn't sound so bad," Luna said hopefully.
"Luna," I said kindly, "never feeling fear again means never being able to protect yourself from danger. Fear keeps us going. Without it, you'll make choices that could get everyone killed."
The weight of what I was asking hit all three of them at once.
"And if we don't do the ritual?" Marcus asked quietly.
I gestured at the grandmother, whose reality lock was now causing visible cracks in the air around us.
"She finishes her spell, locks away your powers forever, and the Hunger Lords eat everything in existence because we can't stop them."
That's when Aria spoke up, her voice still echoing with old power.
"There's another way," she said sadly.
Everyone turned to look at the bright three-year-old.
"What way, sweetheart?" Luna asked.
"I can do the bonding ritual for you," Aria said. "My power is strong enough to force the connection without the blood sacrifice."
My heart stopped. "Child, no. That would—"
"That would kill me," Aria finished quietly. "But it would save everyone else."
"Absolutely not," Luna, Damon, and Marcus said at exactly the same time.
"But Mommy—"
"No," Luna said strongly. "We're not sacrificing children to solve adult problems."
"Then you have to do the emergency ritual," I said desperately. The grandmother's reality lock was almost complete, and the Hunger Lords were getting antsy.
"All right," Damon said suddenly. "We'll do it."
"Damon—" Marcus started.
"We'll do it," Damon repeated, looking at Luna and Marcus with absolute purpose. "Ten years of my life, Marcus's self-healing, and Luna's fear reaction. That's a price we can pay to save everyone."
Through their bond, I felt Luna and Marcus's love and fear warring with each other.
"Are you sure?" Luna whispered.
"I'm sure," Damon answered.
"Me too," Marcus added quietly.
Luna looked at her bright daughter, then at the chaos around them, then back at her soul-bonded mates.
"Okay," she said. "Let's do this."
"The ritual requires a circle of power," I explained quickly. "Stand together, join hands, and—"
"Wait," stopped a new voice that made everyone freeze.
From the shadows stepped a figure I'd hoped never to see again - the original Alpha Spirit that had created the werewolf species thousands of years ago.
"You cannot perform the emergency bonding," it said in a voice like thunder. "Because one of them is already bonded to something else."
We all stared in shock.
"What do you mean?" Luna asked.
The ancient Alpha Spirit looked straight at Marcus with glowing eyes that held infinite sadness.
"Marcus Silvermane," it said gravely, "you are already soul-bonded to Death itself. You have been since the day you became a healer."
Marcus went white. "That's impossible."
"Every time you save a life, you make a deal with Death," the Spirit stated. "Every mending comes at the cost of a piece of your soul. You are more Death's thing than you are alive."
Through their bond, I felt Luna and Damon's horror as they understood what this meant.
"So the tri-bond can't be completed?" Luna whispered.
"Oh, it can be completed," the Alpha Spirit said with terrible certainty. "But it will require Marcus to choose between his bond with you... or his bond with Death."
It paused, letting the weight of that decision settle over everyone.
"And if he picks wrong, Death will claim not just him, but everyone he's ever healed. Including little Aria, whom he saved during her tough birth."
