Chapter 14 The Journey Home

Chapter 14 The Journey Home
"DUCK!"
I threw my healing power into overdrive as Malachar's claws barely missed Damon's head. The ancient vampire moved like liquid shadow, striking from angles that shouldn't exist.
"Left side!" Damon's voice echoed in my mind through our soul-bond, and I spun without thinking, putting up a protective barrier just as another Ancient creature dove at Luna.
"This is impossible," I gasped, my power draining fast. "We can't fight them all!"
The cottage had burst into chaos when Malachar arrived with three other Ancients. Now we were running through a forest that kept changing around us as Luna's Reality Shifter abilities responded to her fear.
"Stop running and face us!" Malachar's sound was like breaking glass. "Your power will taste so much sweeter if you fight back!"
"Keep moving," Damon ordered, but through our mental link, I felt his urgency. He was just as scared as I was.
That's when something weird happened. As we ran side by side, our soul-bond suddenly flared stronger than ever before. I could feel Damon's thoughts mixing with mine, and instead of being confused, it felt... right.
Behind you, his voice whispered in my mind.
I spun and caught an Ancient shadow-creature with my bare hands, my mending power somehow burning it like acid. At the same moment, Damon tackled another thing that had been diving at me from above.
We were fighting like we shared the same body.
"How are you doing that?" Luna called out as she carried Aria while the impossible baby boy ran beside them, somehow keeping up despite being, well, a baby.
"We're not sure," Damon and I said at exactly the same time.
Malachar laughed from somewhere above us. "Adorable! The soul-bond is making you stronger. Too bad it won't matter when I tear it out of your hearts!"
He dropped from the woods like a nightmare, but this time we were ready. Without even talking about it, Damon grabbed my arm and I directed my healing power through him. His Alpha strength tripled, and when he punched Malachar, the ancient vampire actually stumbled backward.
"Impossible," Malachar hissed. "Healing magic can't enhance physical abilities!"
"It can when it's channeled through a soul-bond," Elder Moonwhisper called out. She was running behind us, moving incredibly fast for someone her age. "The bond is letting them share more than just thoughts!"
"Share what?" I asked, dodging another attack.
"Everything," she panted. "Damon, try accessing Marcus's healing abilities!"
"I'm not a healer—" Damon started, then stopped. He held out his hand toward a damaged tree, and green light flowed from his fingers, healing the damage instantly. "What the hell?"
"Language," Luna called out, covering Aria's ears.
"Marcus, try using Damon's Alpha command," Elder Moonwhisper recommended.
I'd never been able to use an Alpha voice - I didn't have that kind of authority. But when I opened my mouth and ordered "STOP!" in Damon's direction, every Ancient creature in the forest froze for three seconds.
"We're sharing abilities," I breathed.
"Which means," Damon said, understanding dawning in his voice and mine simultaneously, "we're twice as strong as either of us alone."
Malachar growled with frustration. "Clever tricks won't save you when I drain your bond dry!"
But he sounded less sure now. Through our shared consciousness, Damon and I created a plan without even talking about it.
"Luna," we said together, "we need you to get to the car."
"What car?" she asked.
"The one that's about to exist," we answered, and Luna's Reality Shifter power responded to our certainty. A heavy-duty truck appeared in the middle of the forest path.
"Everyone in!" Damon shouted.
As we piled into the impossible truck, the Ancients regrouped for another charge. But something had changed. The soul-bond wasn't just connecting Damon and me anymore - it was including Luna, forming a triangle of shared power that made everything clearer.
"I can see their weaknesses," Luna said in wonder as she started the truck with keys that hadn't existed five seconds earlier.
"I can feel their fears," I added, my empathic healing skills expanded through the bond.
"And I can command them to feel those fears," Damon finished, his Alpha power enhanced by our connection.
We drove out of the forest with Ancient creatures chasing us, but for the first time since this whole mess started, we felt like we might actually have a chance.
"How long to reach the pack territory?" Luna asked.
"Two hours," Damon answered. "But Luna, when we get there—"
"I know," she interrupted. "It's going to be a trap. Seraphina will have every edge."
"That's not what worries me," I said quietly. Through the soul-bond, I was feeling something that made my stomach twist with fear.
"What is it?" Damon asked.
"The pack members Seraphina has," I stated. "I can feel them through the bond now. They're not just criminals, Damon."
"What do you mean?"
I closed my eyes and reached out with my enhanced empathic skills, touching the edges of familiar minds. Jake, Sarah, Tom, and thousands of others.
What I felt made me sick.
"She's not planning to kill them," I said slowly. "She's planning to turn them into Ancients."
"That's impossible," Elder Moonwhisper argued from the back seat. "Humans can't become Ancients."
"Werewolves can," I said sadly. "If you pump them full of Ancient blood and use soul-bond magic to bind them to an Ancient master."
Luna's hands tightened on the driving wheel. "So when we get there..."
"We won't be fighting Seraphina and some Ancient allies," Damon finished. "We'll be fighting our own pack, turned into creatures that want to destroy us."
The truck fell quiet except for the sound of the engine and Aria humming softly to her baby brother.
"There's more," I said grudgingly. "Through the bond, I can feel what Seraphina is planning for the ritual."
"What ritual?" Luna asked, though her voice suggested she didn't want to know.
"The Soul Harvesting," I stated. "She's not just trying to steal our power. She's planning to use our transformed pack members as couriers."
"Conduits for what?"
I shared what I was feeling through our enhanced connection, and felt both Luna and Damon's horror as they understood.
"She's going to force us to kill our own people," Damon whispered. "And every pack member we're forced to hurt or kill will feed more power into the harvesting ritual."
"It's perfect," Luna said sadly. "We can't fight our friends without hurting them. But if we don't fight them, they'll kill us. Either way, Seraphina wins."
That's when the impossible baby spoke up from his car seat.
"Actually," he said in his cheerful little voice, "there is a third option."
"What's that?" I asked.
"We let them kill us," he said plainly. "And then we come back as something they can't control."
"Come back as what?" Damon demanded.
The baby smiled with way too much knowledge for something that shouldn't exist yet.
"As the thing that Ancient vampires have nightmares about," he stated. "A Tri-Soul bond that's already died and been reborn."
"Is that even possible?" Luna asked.
"Only one way to find out," Aria said, suddenly looking much older than her three years. "But Mommy, if we do this, we might not come back as the same people."
"What do you mean?" I asked, fearing the answer.
"I mean," Aria said seriously, "when people die and come back through soul-magic, sometimes they come back as the thing the world needs most. Not the thing they used to be."
Through our shared bond, I felt Luna, Damon, and my own fear mixing together. We were talking about deliberately dying and hoping we'd resurrect as something strong enough to stop an ancient evil.
"There has to be another way," Damon said desperately.
That's when Luna's phone rang. She put it on speaker, and Seraphina's voice filled the truck.
"I hope you're enjoying your last few hours of life," Seraphina said sweetly. "Because I have a surprise waiting for you."
"What kind of surprise?" Luna asked.
"The kind where I'm not at the pack territory anymore," Seraphina laughed. "I'm at your old place in Whisper Pines. You know, the place where you and Marcus built your little fake family?"
My blood turned to ice. "There's nothing there."
"Oh, but there is," Seraphina amended. "There are memories. Three years of shared events, of love, of hope. And memories, dear Marcus, are exactly what I need to finish the Soul Harvesting ritual."
"Memories aren't physical," Luna argued.
"They are when they're attached to a Reality Shifter's power," Seraphina explained. "Every place you've lived, every moment you've been happy, every second you've felt safe - it's all filled with your energy. And now I'm going to drain every drop of it."
The line went dead, leaving us staring at each other in fear.
"She's not just stealing our power," I realized. "She's erasing every good thing that ever happened to us."
"Which means," the impossible baby said sadly, "we're not just going to die. We're going to be forgotten."
