Chapter 26

Chapter 26
Jimmy dropped the call and kept looking at his phone. What was this? Why didn't Captain Carter want him to go after this Damon and why did it seem like he knew the name?
"Well, what did the Captain say?" Thompson asked making Jimmy jump out of his thoughts. He had completely forgotten that he was in the car with Thompson.
"Are you okay?" Thompson asked seeing the strange look in his eyes.
"Yeah, I am fine... It's just that the captain doesn't want us chasing after this Damon guy. He wants us to go back to the roads for Miss Danvers," Jimmy explained in a distant voice. He still could not understand why Captain Carter was refusing to let them go after a potential lead.
"But this Damon guy might know where Danvers is. Why can't we go after him, it's our case, right?" Thompson was even more confused. He stopped the car and they pulled over to the shoulder of the road.
"It is but he said he will assign another team for this job. You and I have to return to the roads," Jimmy said feeling dejected. For the first time they were seeing a good lead in this case and Carter decided to take it away.
Thompson was much younger in the force so he didn't understand the politics involved. "It's our case, we should be the ones to chase after the guy, not some new team. Listen," Thompson said turning to face Jimmy, "let us assume the new guys he wants to assign catch him, what questions will they ask him? They don't even know how we knew about him or what we are chasing him for?"
At that moment Jimmy's phone rang out again and he picked it up. "Hello, sir!" He responded.
"How did you find out about Damon?" Captain Carter asked.
Jimmy knew Carter was going to ask him this question but he expected him to ask how the guy was connected to the case and not how he knew. Did the captain know more about this case than they did?
"I got a card from the receptionist back at that motel you came to meet us at," Jimmy said and Thompson signaled to him to put the phone on speaker, the wait and suspense were killing him.
"Why didn't you tell me about it then?" Carter snapped.
Jimmy frowned. This was not the major crisis here. They were wasting time going over useless formalities when Damon and his guys could be halfway across New Orleans by now.
"I am sorry sir but at the time I felt it wasn't important," Jimmy replied instead
"You felt It wasn't important for a simple receptionist to have the complimentary card of an Alpha!" He screeched.
"Alpha?" Jimmy asked. Was that supposed to be his code name or were they dealing with fictional characters from a book now?
"Forget I said that. I need you to go back and apprehend that receptionist," Carter ordered.
"Based on what grounds sir?" Thompson blurted out before he could stop himself. The whole thing was becoming absurd! Now they had to arrest an innocent civilian because she gave them a fucking comp. Card?
Carter heaved a heavy sigh through the phone before his sharp voice came back on the line. "Thompson, that lady is also a suspect. She needs to be questioned."
"But she is already traumatized by your last officer and you want us to go back and apprehend her for taking the complimentary card of a person who claims to be saving his sister from a kidnap? In criminal law, we would be considered the criminals here!" Thompson snorted.
"This isn't the Academy boy! This is a real-life situation. Zip your tongue and do as you are told or stop telling me about criminal laws!" Carter's voice echoed violently through the phone and Jimmy was grateful it was on speaker.
"Well, what is going to happen now, are we going to turn around?" Thompson asked when the call had stopped.
"Mike was right," Jimmy whispered to himself completely oblivious to the world and his partner beside him.
"Mike was right about what?" Thompson asked wondering if Jummy was also starting to lose his mind like his friend, Mike.
"This case is more than we are seeing. It's deeper. Miss Laila Danvers isn't an ordinary suspect. The story isn't complete, we need to find out the truth. I need the truth. Who exactly killed Elena?"
"Well, I won't dispute you, you are right about that. This case is a lot of layers of shit," Thompson said with a sly grin on his face. "So what's it going to be?"
"We are not returning to that motel, let's go find Damon!" Jimmy said and Thompson's grin increased.
It was time they took this case into their own hands. They need to find this Damon and find out what he knew about Laila Danvers and the death of her friend, Elena.

Carter dropped his phone and jumped to his feet. This matter had to be taken to the lord supremo as soon as possible. He couldn't waste a second longer. He took out his phone and called him.
"My lord, I need to see you. Are you around?" He demanded.
"Yes, I am sorting some nonsense complaints in the conference room," Dearkson replied in a tired voice.
"Okay, I'll be right there, " Carter said, pulling on his shoes.
"Aren't you in your office?" Dearkson wondered.
"I am but I need to come to you."
"I will be waiting then!" Clarkson said ending the call.
Carter didn't have time to take his car because his silly human machine was packed in a tight corner of the parking lot. He would love to shift and just run there but he couldn't do that.
Outside, he started running. Only shifted slightly when he felt nobody watching. For the rest of the vacation
There was a sharp knock on the conference room's door and Dearkson's husky voice spoke up asking whoever it was to step in.
"The door is opened," he said, returning his focus to the pile of papers in front of him.
Carter emerges from the door. He was sweating profusely and his breathing was like that of a racing horse. His uniform had large stain patches and Dearkson wondered how the man got to New Orleans from Southern California so fast. They spoke just a few minutes ago and he was in his office in Southern California then.
"Carter, did you run from the big city or what?" Clarkson said raising his eyes from the papers to the man in front of him.
"I had to get here as quickly as possible. This isn't a matter to discuss on the phone my lord, "Carter breathed.
"Alright, let's hear it," Clarkson said pushing his papers aside. "What is the matter, Carter?" He asked him.
"I have just been informed that Damon is back in New Orleans as we speak." He rushed out.
"Sit down Carter," Clarkson said, realizing how important the discussion was. "Damon is back? Are you sure?"
"Yes, my Lord. Two of my officers the ones I left in charge of Laila, found him heading back to town. He is here with his men as we speak," Carter said, catching his breath.
"We have to inform the guards right away. Get spies to watch their every move. We need to know why they are back here, before summoning them, " Clarkson said.
"My officers believe he is here with Laila. What if he brought her back my lord? Shouldn't we attack? I know that bastard won't let us have her just like that! "
Dearkson stared at something on his table. He was deep in thought. To catch the enemy you need to start thinking like them.
"What do you think my lord?" Carter insisted seeing that Dearkson wasn't paying attention to him.
"Relax Carter," Dearkson muttered, raising his head to Carter. "Damon isn't stupid. If he has Laila, he would not come here unless he wants to hand her over, and right now, seeing as things have unfolded, he wouldn't do that. That means he wouldn't bring Laila here either. So if he is here, he came for something else and we need to find out what that thing is," Clarkson said moving to his feet.
Carter nodded his head in agreement. It was true Damon was a smart guy. He wouldn't come all the way here if he had Laila. It's either he had abandoned the mission ” which was very unlikely" or he came for something entirely different.
"How are the boys doing with Jonathan Martin?" Dearkson asked as he started pacing the room.
"What does that old fool have to do with any of this?" Carter asked. Jonathan Martin was the last thing on Carter's mind. He was just an old fool they had to kill as soon as this Laila situation was over. He had a large amount of the population supporting him but he didn't have as much power as they had.
"Damon has returned for a reason which I am betting, is homework," Dearkson stated and Carter got even more confused. First, it was Jonathan Martin now he was talking about Homework.
"What homework?" Carter asked.
Dearkson sent him a cold glare, then he clicked his tongue. "Remind me how you became a police officer again?"
Carter drooped his head to his stained shoes unable to meet Dearkson's eyes.
"Homework Is information. Damon had returned to get information. I am guessing that is what that boy of his was supposed to come for. Fortunately for us, Kyle had handled that situation."
"Now, the only way Damon can get the information is through a member of the council. And our loose end is Jonathan. We need to silence him before he speaks," Clarkson said.
Carter's eyes brightened up as he finally understood what Dearkson was trying to do. He was connecting the dots
"I will personally see It done, my lord," Carter said.
