I’m rooted in my place.
I can't believe what just happened. My wolf has refused to shift!
Tears appear in my eyes. My father walks up to me and takes me in his arms. “What happened, Mercedes? Why didn't your wolf want to shift?" he asks concerned. I hide my face in his chest. “Era said we can't shift for the time being. There's something else going on that won't allow us to shift for a while," I cry out loud. Despair has gripped me completely now.
“Dad! What will happen to me now that Era won't shift? I want to go to Zane! He is my mate, I don't want to stay here”, I sob heartbreakingly. Behind me, I hear some shifts. A tumult arises, everyone starts talking at once. The atmosphere becomes menacing.
Alpha Rainer steps forward. “Mercedes, now that your wolf has not stated who your mate actually is, you will have to stay here until your first shift. That is what has been agreed. There is still no clarity in this impasse. And I maintain that you are my fated mate.” He tries to grab me by the arm to pull me away from my father. I turn to him aggressively. “I'm not your mate! That's Zane and my wolf confirmed it. My place is in Midnight Moon”.
Alpha Rainer shakes his head in denial.
“No, Mercedes. Agreements have been made with the Council. Your wolf would determine who your mate is. And that hasn't happened now, for unknown reasons," he explains as if talking to a pup. “We have treated you well all these days, you lacked nothing. Shadow Moon is happy to host you until your wolf speaks out”.
The rest are now joining. Alpha King Remus holds up his hands to silence Alpha Rainer. “What you're saying is only partially correct, Alpha,” he corrects the man. “It has also been determined that she can decide where she wants to go when she is eighteen. Mercedes is now an adult, she decides where she goes and stands.”
“Not only that, Alpha King. Mercedes is a member of our pack, Silver Moon”, Glary triumphantly joins the conversation. “So, she comes back with me and then decides how she wants to organize her life in our pack. We will leave immediately.” He walks toward me, but my father shields me from him.
“Mercedes, speak up. Where do you want to go now?” my father bellows now, sick of the tossing and turning between the Alphas. The Alpha King also shows that he has had enough of this childish behavior of the high rankings. I walk to Jace and see him watching all concentrated. He is most likely with Zane in the mind link.
“My place is with my mate in Midnight Moon. And that's where I'm going with my parents now."
Hardly have I finished speaking to a group of warriors running toward us in human form. They are heavily armed, their eyes spitting fire. Kenry and Zane are in the lead. When my eyes met my mate's, an electric shock flared up my body. I’ve never been so happy to see him.
“Zane!” I exclaim breathlessly.
My canines elongate, now they are from an adult wolf. Although Era has not shown herself, she is totally present in me. White fur appears on my arms, my sharp white canines sparkle against the dark.
With a few firm jumps, I'm with Zane.
I throw myself into his arms, wrap my legs around his waist. And before I know it, I've slid the band around his neck aside. As if other forces are controlling my actions, I grab his head and bend it to one side. In one fluid motion, I bury my fangs deep into his skin, growling like mad. I feel the same shock that went through me, is now ravishing him. He roared in ecstasy, grabbed me by the shoulders and fiercely pressed my body against his.
‘MATE!’ Jax growls authoritatively. 'MINE'
His claim is clearly audible to the group that has now gathered around us and the others waiting at the packhouse. A cloud is moving away from the moon, which now shines a beam of light over us. I'm reluctant to let go of Zane still fearing he'll leave again.
I bow my head and let my neck bare for him.
“No!” it sounds simultaneous. Glary and Alpha Rainer's voices coincide, but that doesn't stop me.
"Mark me. Make me yours too, Zane". He won't let that be said twice. I immediately feel his warm fangs on my neck. I let out a cry of pain before a hot shot runs in me, from my heart straight to my cunt. I press harder against him.
“Please, find a room before you continue”, a voice suddenly reproaches behind us. "There are still a few unmated wolves here who feel awkward about your display."
I open my eyes and see no one standing there but Jasmina. She seems different, her aura has improved a lot since I last saw her. She walks forward and stands beside us. When she sees Glary she pretends to throw up, making a lot of nasty noises. But then she looks carefully around again and I see her eyes widen like saucers.
"MATE"
Jasmina runs forward in delight and is caught in the arms of Alpha Rainer. The couple kisses as if their lives depended on it. Everyone is surprised at first to see this all happening. In Zane's arms, I look at the feisty warrior who has now turned into a love-sick pup. Glary is staring open-mouthed at the couple. "Wouldn't you rent a room yourself, Jasmina?" Zane reminds her dryly. He then turns to Alpha Rainer who stares adoringly at his mate.
“With this mating, the impending war between our packs is off and your head is saved, Alpha,” he declares sternly to his colleague. “You have seriously violated our agreement. We will have to review it. Stealing my mate was not an act of heroism. This must not happen again,” he says, his face starting to get furious again.
“No!”
Glary is flushed to see what is happening. Everyone is now turning their attention to him.
“I can't stay empty-handed. To own Mercedes, I rejected my mate and now she also finds her second chance. I want Mercedes back!”
"And that's the golden phrase I've been waiting for so long, baby."
Gamma Kenry holds up his traditional sword and off goes Glary’s head in one sway...
