Chapter 29 Marcus's Offer

Chapter 29 Marcus's Offer
Clara's POV

"Clara, breathe. Just breathe."
Emma's voice comes through my phone as I hide behind the archive shelves, listening to Helena and her companion descend the stairs. My sister doesn't know about wolves or curses, but she knows panic when she hears it.
"I can't… there's no way out…"
"There's always a way out. You're a doctor. You've handled worse than this." Emma's practical voice cuts through my terror. "What's around you?"
I force myself to look. Old shelves. Boxes. A ventilation grate near the ceiling.
"Vent," I whisper. "But it's too high…"
"Stack boxes. Move. Now."
I shove my phone in my pocket and start moving boxes as quietly as possible. The footsteps pause on the stairs.
"Did you hear something?" Helena asks.
"Old building. Probably rats."
I climb the makeshift tower of boxes, Margaret's journal tucked in my jacket. The vent cover is rusted but comes loose after precious seconds of pulling. I'm squeezing into the narrow space when my phone buzzes.
Too loud. Way too loud.
"Someone's here!" The male voice shouts.
I don't wait. I pull myself into the vent shaft and crawl frantically through darkness. Behind me, I hear boxes crashing as they search.
The vent leads me through walls, over rooms, until I find another grate. I kick it loose and tumble out into a hallway I don't recognize. The fall knocks the wind from my lungs.
My phone lights up with texts from Emma demanding to know if I'm alive. I'm typing a response when footsteps echo behind me.
I run.
The mansion is a maze when you're panicking. I take random turns, trying to get back to areas I know. Finally burst through a side door into the gardens.
Right into Damon.
"Clara? What the hell… you're covered in dust and bleeding…"
"The archives. Helena was there. They were going to kill me." The words tumble out. "I found Margaret Chen's journal. She figured it out seventy years ago. Elara's been poisoning the mates, sabotaging the transformations…"
"Slow down." He grabs my shoulders. "You're not making sense."
I show him the journal. His face goes pale as he reads Margaret's words.
"This can't be real. The Thorne family wouldn't…"
"Read it. All of it. She documented everything." My hands won't stop shaking. "How many more pieces of evidence have been destroyed over the years? How many women died because someone in the Thorne bloodline made sure the cure never worked?"
Damon pulls out his phone. "I'm calling Kael…"
"No!" I grab his arm. "We don't know who else is involved. Helena has allies we don't know about. The male voice I heard, I didn't recognize it. Could be anyone."
"Then what do you suggest?"
Before I can answer, my phone rings. Unknown number.
I almost don't answer, but something makes me pick up.
"Clara Veyron?" The voice is smooth, controlled. Male. "This is Marcus Bloodfang. I know this is unexpected, but I have a proposition for you."
"How did you get this number?"
"I have resources. More importantly, I have information about what you just found in those archives." He pauses. "And about who's currently hunting you through the Shadowclaw mansion."
My blood runs cold. "You have people inside watching?"
"I have people inside warning me when one side is about to do something catastrophically stupid. Like murder an innocent woman for discovering uncomfortable truths." His voice carries no emotion. "I'm extending an invitation. Meet me at the abandoned church on the border between our territories. Neutral ground. I guarantee your safety."
"Why would I trust you?"
"Because the alternative is going back inside that mansion where at least three wolves want you dead. Because I actually have answers about what your friend Margaret discovered. And because, Clara, I'm not the villain in this story. I'm just the one willing to tell you the truth."
I look at Damon. He's shaking his head violently.
"I need time to think…"
"You have until sunset. After that, Helena's people will have locked down the mansion. You'll be trapped, and I won't be able to help." Marcus's voice softens slightly. "I know Kael has painted me as the enemy. But ask yourself: who's actually tried to kill you? Bloodfang wolves who wanted leverage, or Shadowclaw wolves who want you permanently gone?"
He hangs up before I can respond.
"Absolutely not," Damon says immediately. "You are not meeting with Marcus Bloodfang. It's obviously a trap."
"Is it?" I clutch Margaret's journal tighter. "He knew about the archives. Knew I was in danger. If he wanted me dead, why warn me?"
"Because he wants you alive as his prisoner. To steal the curse-breaking power."
"Or maybe he has information I need." I start walking toward the garage. "I'm going."
"Clara, stop. Think about this."
"I have been thinking. Samuel betrayed us to end the curse. Helena tried to murder me to protect Thorne secrets. Elara's been poisoning me for weeks." I spin to face him. "Everyone keeps saying they're protecting me, but all they're doing is controlling me. Maybe it's time I get some actual answers instead of more people telling me what's best."
"Kael will lose his mind if you go to Marcus…"
"Then don't tell him until I'm already there." I reach the garage and grab keys to one of the SUVs. "I'm taking guards. Four of them. Marcus promised neutral ground and safe passage. If he breaks that promise, you'll know exactly where to find my body."
Damon looks torn between tackling me and letting me go.
"Four guards. Armed. And you wear a tracker." He pulls a small device from his pocket. "If anything goes wrong, we'll have a strike team there in five minutes."
The abandoned church sits exactly on the border between territories. It's old, maybe a century, with broken stained glass windows and ivy crawling up stone walls. Beautiful in a haunted way.
Marcus waits on the front steps, alone. He's not what I expected, older than Kael, maybe early forties, with salt-and-pepper hair and the kind of face that belongs in boardrooms, not battles. He wears an expensive suit like he's come from a business meeting.
"Ms. Veyron." He doesn't approach, keeping distance between us. "Thank you for coming. I know this took considerable courage."
"Let's skip the pleasantries. You said you have information."
"Straight to business. I respect that." He gestures to the church. "Shall we speak inside? I have documents to show you."
My guards tense, but I nod. We follow Marcus into the church.
Inside, he's set up a table with papers, photographs, and old books spread across it.
"I've been investigating the Thorne family for three years," he says, sorting through documents. "Ever since I realized they were manipulating multiple packs, not just Shadowclaw. What you found in those archives is just the tip of a very deep conspiracy."
He shows me photographs, old ones, some dating back to the 1800s. They show the same woman in different time periods, barely aging.
"Elara's not just descended from Lydia Thorne. She is Lydia Thorne's daughter. She's over two hundred years old, sustained by the magical power she drains from failed bonding attempts."
My legs feel weak. "That's impossible."
"Is it? You're currently transforming from human to wolf because of a magical bond. Is an ancient witch sustained by death magic really that much harder to believe?" He pulls out more documents. "Every generation, the Thornes ensure Arden Alphas attempt to break the curse. Every generation, they make sure those attempts fail in specific ways that generate maximum suffering. Elara feeds on that suffering. Literally."
I think about the medicine Elara's been giving me. How tired I've felt. How the transformation seems to hurt more than it should.
"She's been poisoning me."
"Yes. Slowly, carefully, ensuring you suffer for weeks before the inevitable failure. She did the same to Margaret Chen, to Elizabeth Thornwood, to all of them." Marcus's expression is genuinely sympathetic. "I'm not a good man, Clara. I've done terrible things to maintain my power. But even I won't feed on grief like the Thornes do."
He opens one of the old books to a marked page.
"This is a copy of Lydia Thorne's original curse. Samuel had it wrong, she didn't curse the Ardens out of heartbreak. She cursed them because their bloodline had the potential to create something she feared: human-wolf hybrids with the power to break supernatural hierarchies. Arden wolves who bonded with humans would create a new species that answered to no ancient powers, no old rules."
"So she made sure it could never happen."
"Exactly. And her daughter has been enforcing that curse for two centuries, growing stronger with each failed attempt." He closes the book. "Until you."
"What makes me different?"
"Honestly? Nothing. You're just the first one to figure out the truth before it was too late." Marcus meets my eyes. "Which is why I'm making you an offer."
Here it comes. The real reason for this meeting.
"Join my pack. Break your bond with Kael, yes, I know a way to do it without killing you. Transform under my protection, without Elara's interference. Become what you're meant to be without the Shadowclaw politics and the Thorne sabotage."
"And what do you get out of this?"
"A powerful ally. Proof that the curse can be broken. And the satisfaction of watching the Thorne family lose their primary power source." He smiles slightly. "Also, it would devastate Kael, which I admit has a certain appeal. Our families have been enemies for generations."
I look at the documents spread across the table. Evidence of centuries of manipulation and murder. Proof that everything I've been told is a lie.
"You really think you can break my bond with Kael without killing me?"
"I have a witch… not Elara, obviously… who's been studying the curse independently. She believes if the bond is severed before the transformation completes, you'll survive. You'll lose the connection to Kael, yes. But you'll live. Transform successfully. Be free."
"Free as your pack member. Under your authority."
"Better than dead under Kael's guilt." Marcus's voice is pragmatic, not cruel. "Look, I'm not asking you to love me or trust me. I'm offering you a third option besides transformation in Shadowclaw or death. Kael can't protect you from the Thornes, they're too embedded in his pack. I can."
He's not wrong. Helena, Elder Thorne, probably others I don't know about, they all want me gone. And Elara's been poisoning me for weeks.
But breaking the bond with Kael... just the thought makes my chest ache.
"I need time to think about this."
"You have until the blood moon. Three weeks." Marcus starts gathering his documents. "But Clara, understand: if you stay with Shadowclaw, you're playing into exactly what Elara wants. More suffering. More power for her. And very likely, your death. Kael's fourth failed mate."
"Third," I correct. "Catherine, Maria, Jessica."
"No. Seventh. His father tried four times before him. Check your archives more carefully." Marcus's expression is somber. "Seven women have died trying to break this curse while Elara orchestrated their failures. Don't be the eighth."
He leaves me with the documents and heads for the door. Then pauses.
"For what it's worth, I think you genuinely love him. And I think he loves you. But sometimes love isn't enough when you're fighting powers older than your combined lifetimes. Sometimes survival requires choosing yourself over romance."
After he leaves, I sit in the empty church reading through his evidence. My guards wait outside, probably radioing Damon about every detail.
Everything Marcus showed me corroborates what Margaret wrote. The Thorne family has been murdering Arden mates for generations. Elara is ancient and powerful and feeding on our suffering.
And Marcus is offering me a way out that doesn't involve dying or watching Kael destroy himself.
It should be an easy choice.
But nothing about this has ever been easy.
My phone buzzes. Text from Kael: "Where are you?"
I look at the message, at Margaret's journal in my lap, at the documents proving centuries of conspiracy.
And I have no idea what to tell him.
