Chapter 46 The Weight Of The Crown

Chapter 46 The Weight Of The Crown
The air in the old mine shaft was thin and tasted of wet stone. Far above them, they could hear the muffled thud-thud-thud of SOC helicopters circling the mountain like hungry birds. But down here, in the deep dark, there was only the sound of two people breathing.

Kieran sat against the jagged wall, his chest heaving. His body felt like a lead weight. For years, his wolf had given him endless energy and a heart that never tired. Now, he felt every bruise, every scrape, and the bone-deep exhaustion of a normal man.

He looked at Lila. She was sitting five feet away from him, but in the darkness, she looked like a star. Her skin was still humming with a soft, violet light. It was beautiful, but it was terrifying. It was the light that had killed the bond.

Kieran closed his eyes and tried one more time. He reached into the back of his mind, searching for that warm, golden thread that always connected him to Lila.

Nothing. Just a cold, empty hole.

"Stop trying, Kieran," Lila said. Her voice didn't echo; it seemed to vibrate through the rocks. "I can hear your heart beating, but I can't feel your soul. It’s gone."

Kieran opened his eyes. "It’s not gone, Lila. I’m right here. I’m not leaving you."

"But you’re human," she whispered. She looked at her hands. Small sparks of purple electricity jumped between her fingers. "And I... I don't know what I am. When I blocked the tunnel, I didn't even think about it. I just felt the mountain wanted to help me. I felt the roots waiting for my command."

Kieran leaned his head back against the stone.

"You saved me. The SOC would have burned my heart out if you hadn't taken the power."

"And now they'll burn the whole world to get to me," Lila said. She stood up, and as she moved, the shadows on the walls seemed to bow to her.

"Kieran, the Lead Auditor... he didn't want a peace treaty. He wanted a weapon. And now I’m the biggest weapon on earth."

Suddenly, footsteps echoed from further down the tunnel. Kieran scrambled to his feet, his hand instinctively reaching for a claw that was no longer there. He picked up a heavy piece of timber instead, standing in front of Lila.

"It's just us, Alpha," a voice called out.

Ronan and Selena stepped into the small circle of Lila’s light. They looked terrible. Ronan’s arm was bandaged, and Selena was clutching her old books as if they were shields. Behind them were a few young warriors and Mara.

"The others?" Kieran asked, his voice cracking.

"Scattered," Ronan said, his head low. "The SOC took the manor. They’ve set up a perimeter.

Anyone who tries to shift gets hit with the frequency hum. Half the pack is trapped in the service tunnels, and the other half... the SOC took them in the black trucks."

A heavy silence fell over the group. The Shadow Moon pack the most powerful pack in the north had been broken in a single night.

"They’re looking for the girl," one of the young warriors muttered, looking at Lila with eyes full of fear. "The humans said if we gave her up, they’d turn off the noise. They said she’s the reason the forest turned white."

Kieran stepped forward, dropping the timber and using his height to look the warrior in the eye. He didn't have his Alpha glow, but he still had the presence of a king.

"She is your Luna," Kieran said, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl. "And she is the only reason I am still breathing. If any of you think about handing her over, you’ll have to go through me first."

"You're human, Kieran!" the warrior shouted back. "Look at you! You’re shaking! You can't even protect yourself, let alone her!"

Ronan moved like lightning, pinning the warrior against the wall. "Watch your tongue. He is still your Alpha."

"Is he?" the warrior hissed. "An Alpha without a wolf is just a man. And a Luna with purple eyes is just a curse”.

Lila felt the anger building again. It wasn't just her anger; it was the mountain's anger. She felt the heavy weight of the rocks above them, the deep roots of the trees, and the ancient hunger of the Thorne line.

"Enough!" Lila said.

She didn't shout, but the word hit the room like a physical blow. The violet light in her eyes flared so bright that everyone had to shield their eyes. The ground beneath the warrior’s feet began to crack, and small, white thorns pushed up through the dirt, circling his boots.

"I didn't ask for this," Lila said, her voice sounding cold and ancient. "But I have it. And I am using it to keep you alive. If you want to leave, leave. But if you stay, you follow Kieran. Because he’s the only one here who still knows what it means to be a wolf, even if he can't shift."

The warrior looked at the thorns at his feet and turned pale. He nodded quickly, backing away.

Lila’s light dimmed, and she slumped against Kieran. The power was draining her. She wasn't used to the weight of it.

Kieran caught her, holding her close. He could feel the heat coming off her skin a feverish, magical heat.

"We can't stay here," Selena whispered, looking at a map in her book. "The SOC will start using ground-penetrating radar soon. But there is a place... the Deep Well. It’s where the first Thorne was born. The humans can't see it, and the frequency hum can't reach it."

"How far?" Kieran asked.

"Six miles through the old shafts," Selena said.

"But Kieran... It's in the 'Dead Zone.' No wolf has been there in a hundred years because the air itself is full of the curse."

Kieran looked at Lila, then at his broken pack. He had no wolf, no bond, and no army. All he had was a girl who was turning into a god and a key in his pocket that he didn't know how to use.

"Lead the way," Kieran said.

As they begin the long walk into the dark, Lila realises she can "see" through the stone. She sees the SOC soldiers above them, and she sees the Lead Auditor holding a device that is tracking her violet energy like a compass. But she also sees something else a shadow moving in the deep tunnels ahead of them.

Something that has been waiting for a
Thorne to return to the Deep Well.
