Chapter 53 The First Howl
Chapter 53 The First Howl
KAELAN POV
The night is alive with whispers but not the gentle kind rather the kind that crawl under your skin, make your heart hammer, make every nerve scream.
Rhylen’s warning had been precise. The North doesn’t come quietly and now, their shadows are moving, slinking over the ridges, brushing through the trees, pressing closer with a deadly patience.
I tighten my grip on Elara’s hand. She stands beside me on the battlements, eyes wide, silver light faintly pulsing beneath her skin. I can feel her heartbeat in sync with mine, quick and determined.
“You can do this,” I murmur, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “We do this together.”
Her lips quirk into a small, tense smile. “Together,” she repeats, almost like a vow and there it is the promise that cuts deeper than any sword, steadier than any shield.
I press my forehead to hers, letting the storm in my chest find calm in her presence. The Northern winds whip around us, but here, up on the wall, it’s ours, our bubble, a moment that refuses to be stolen by war.
I wish I could hold her forever. But war is impatient. Below, Liora and Darius are readying the archers near the eastern tower. He adjusts the strap on her shoulder armor, fingers lingering far longer than necessary. She pretends to be annoyed, but her hand finds his, squeezing it. “You’ll survive this,” he murmurs, eyes locking with hers.
“I won’t just survive,” she replies, voice low. “I’ll come back to you.” He leans down, pressing a chaste kiss to her lips, a spark in the cold night. “I’ll be waiting.”
A low growl rumbles through the valley the North has begun its advance. Wolves appear in the moonlight, black and silver, their eyes like coals, movement precise and deadly. Rhylen’s voice cuts through the tension. “They’re splitting into three squads. One through the valley, one along the cliffside, and one” He swallows hard. “right at the wall.”
My jaw tightens. “Then we split too. Hold the walls, protect the civilians, and let them see what happens when they challenge the southern Wolves.” He nods, though his expression shows what we all feel, fear, excitement, and adrenaline coiling together.
Elara steps closer, hands brushing my chest, eyes fierce. “I can help,” she says, her voice calm despite the chaos around us. “You already have,” I whisper, brushing my lips against hers quickly more than a kiss, less than a vow, but heavy with meaning. “And you’ll keep helping. By my side.”
Her hands tighten, pressing against me. “Always.” The words make the weight of the coming battle lighter or at least, manageable.
The first clash comes fast. I lead the charge at the northern gate with Rhylen flanking me, and the wall erupts in light as Elara steps forward. The energy from her mark burns brighter than ever, silver streams licking the ground like liquid moonlight. Wolves hesitate, confused by the sudden surge, giving our defenders just enough space to hold.
Liora fires arrow after arrow, Darius by her side, each shot finding its mark with deadly precision. When she glances at him, their eyes meet across the chaos, and I see that spark the small flame that keeps hope alive.
Elara’s power surges again stronger than anything before and I feel it resonate in me. The bond we share hums, loud and fierce, and it gives me control, focus, the sense that we are unbreakable together. I brush her hair back, pressing a kiss to her temple mid-battle, a promise in the midst of war. “You’re incredible,” I shout, just loud enough for her to hear.
She smiles, though her hands glow with energy. “And you’re reckless.” “Only for you,” I call back, grinning despite the carnage. The Northern squads are relentless, but the southern Wolves fight with precision, discipline, and heart. Rhylen intercepts one of the flankers, moving with a predator’s grace. I hear his roar cut through the night a Beta claiming his ground. He glances at me briefly, pride flashing in his eyes.
We’re not just fighting; we’re showing them what unity means. The momentary lull gives me a chance to check on Elara. Her breathing is fast, but controlled, eyes glowing with her mark’s energy. I take her hand, squeezing tightly.
“Every pulse, every breath don’t let go,” I say.
She leans against me, letting the rush of power and adrenaline blend with a softer, more intimate thrill the knowledge that we’re alive, together, and bound beyond the fight. “I won’t,” she whispers.
By the wall, Liora and Darius fend off a group of Northern scouts that have tried to flank us. In the heat of battle, she’s fearless; he’s unyielding. And in that fleeting pause, their fingers brush again, a reminder of the life waiting for them beyond the war. Liora grins through the tension. “You keep saving my life. How am I supposed to survive this without you?”
Darius laughs, though his eyes stay sharp. “You’ll manage,” he says. “Because I’m not going anywhere.” A brief, fleeting kiss follows, stolen amidst shouts and the clashing of swords, a tiny island of hope in the river of chaos.
The North recoils under Elara’s surge, faltering, unable to comprehend the force of her power combined with our pack. I press my lips to her cheek, inhaling the scent of sweat, rain, and moonlight, letting the moment anchor me amidst the chaos.
“This is only the beginning,” I murmur, brushing my hands over her face. “But we’ll face it… together.” Her lips find mine soft at first, then insistent. Our kiss is a tether, a promise of survival, of love, of a bond that war cannot sever.
And as the first howl rises across the battlefield, carrying fury and defiance, I know this: No enemy, no prophecy, no darkness can touch us while we fight side by side not while we choose each other.
