Chapter 46 The Pack That Turns on Itself
Chapter 46 The Pack That Turns on Itself
Elara POV
The shouting outside turned into chanting my name mixed with fear and superstition. “Elara is marked and cursed, send her back to the North before the magic destroys us all.” My stomach twisted painfully and tears pricked my eyes.
“Caius they hate me.” Selena stepped forward, gripping my shoulders firmly. “They fear you. That is different. Fear can be changed.”
Kaelan turned me toward him, lifting my chin with gentle fingers. “You are not cursed,” he said.
“You are the last of a royal bloodline. The one meant to restore what was lost and I swear, Elara” His forehead touched mine, breath warm against my lips. “I will burn the North to ash before I let them take you.”
My heart fluttered violently, then the door rattle fists pounding. Caius cursed under his breath.
“They’re demanding we bring her out.” Kaelan stepped between me and the door, his entire body radiating lethal intent. “Let them try.”
And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid of the mark on my chest. I was afraid of what the world would do to stop me from uncovering the legacy it tried so hard to destroy.
My shattered legacy, is now rising again.
KAELAN POV
The pounding on the door grew louder, angrier and more desperate. “Elara! Elara must be surrendered now!”
“She’s cursed!” “She’ll doom us all!” Each shout was a claw raking against my control.
I stepped fully in front of her, blocking her from the door, my body already shifting bones tightening, senses sharpening, vision tinged with wolf.gold.
Rhylen moved beside me, hands flexing. “They’re losing it. If this gets out of hand”
“It won’t,” Caius snapped, though his voice carried the strain of someone who knew the situation teetered on a blade’s edge.
Selena pressed her hand on the Alpha’s shoulder, grounding him. “Caius, they’re frightened. Speak to them before fear turns into bloodshed.”
“You stay behind me,” he said to her. “No matter what happens.” Elara swallowed hard but nodded. The mark pulsed through her palm into mine like a heartbeat trying to anchor itself to me. “I’m not leaving your side,” I told her.
She looked up at me then eyes wide and frightene but full of trust. Selena pushed the door open. The roar of voices struck us like a physical wave.
Dozens no, hundreds of wolves filled the courtyard. Torches lit their faces in flickering orange, shadows twisting their fear into something monstrous.
Some clutched their children, some held weapon, some stood frozen and trembling.
Others eyes wild and were ready for war.
“It’s her!” a man shouted, pointing. “The marked girl!” A woman screamed, “She’ll bring ruin!” Another man stepped forward. “Alpha Caius! Give her to the North before the prophecy destroys us! The words hit Elara like a blow, I felt her flinch behind me.
Caius raised his hands for silence but the crowd only grew louder, pushing forward, shouting, pleading, demanding. “She is the Second Key!” “Kill her before the North claims her!” “Send her away!” Don’t doom us.
"ENOUGH!”
Every wolf froze, even the flames stilled. The Alpha stepped forward, his presence vast, powerful, oppressive in the air.
“You stand here,” he growled, “and dare to demand the sacrifice of a child your Council hunted? A girl who carries the bloodline our ancestors vowed to protect?”
Shame rippled through the crow but fear remained. A man in the front shook his head. “Alpha she’s marked. She’s the heir of the Ashborne clan. The prophecy says her awakening brings ruin”
“No,” Caius snarled. “It says her awakening brings change.” “Change is ruin!” someone yelled.
Selena stepped forward, voice cutting and sharp. “ Change is the end of your blind obedience to a Council that murders children!”
The crowd murmured some recoiled, some listened while some doubted for the first time but then the worst voice of all rose from the center of the crowd a voice dripping with old superstition and hatred.
“She is a cursed heir! The last Ashborne!”
An old sentinel glared, pointing straight at Elara. “Her blood carries the rituals that once bound the wild magic. Her clan was wiped out for a reason!”
And the crowd gasped. Elara’s breath hitched behind me. My wolf slammed against my skin, desperate to break out, to kill whoever dared speak that way. I turned on the sentinel, voice a dangerous growl. “You know nothing of her clan.”
“I know enough,” he spat. “The Ashborne wielded magic no Alpha could command. They threatened the balance of power. The North destroyed them to protect us!” “You call slaughter protection?” I roared.
“She is the last of them!” he shouted. “And the moment the Second Key awakens, the North will come for all of us!”
Another wolf shouted, “Give her to them. Let them take their curse back!” The chanting rose again and my control snapped. Then I shouted
“ANYONE WHO TOUCHES HER DIES.” The courtyard fell silent. Elara’s hand trembled in mine but she didn’t let go and then the air shifted.
It wasn’t wind and It wasn’t magic, It was her.
Elara stepped from behind me, her fingers still laced with mine. Her mark glowed through her shirt, bright enough to light the stones beneath our feet.
Gasps rippled through the crowd, she wasn’t trembling anymore and she wasn’t hiding. Her voice, when she spoke, carried a brokenness and strength that pierced straight through every wolf present.
“I never asked to be born with this mark,” she said softly. “I never asked for power. I never asked for death or prophecy or a legacy soaked in blood.” The glow brightened. “But I won’t run from it anymore.” Silence.
Even the flames on the torches bowed toward her, as if listening.
“I am Ashborne,” she whispered. “But I am also something my clan never had time to become. I am the proof that the Council failed to erase us.”
Then something happened something none of us expected. Her mark pulsed outward a wave of energy invisible yet felt in the bones.
Every wolf in the courtyard dropped to their knees. Rhylen gasped, Selena’s hand flew to her mouth. Even Caius staggered, grabbing a pillar for support.
My wolf bowed inside my chest, the crowd trembled before her, the last heir. The First Key awakened and Elarabreathing harder now, magic burning beneath her skin looked up at me.
“Kaelan,” she whispered, terrified. “What’s happening to me?”
I caught her before she fell, her body shook violently, energy tearing through her vein like lightning. Caius stepped forward, eyes wide with shock. “The Second Key” he breathed. “It’s responding to her fear.”
Rhylen cursed. “We need to get her inside now.” Selena nodded. “Before the mark draws more than just our wolves’ attention.”
Because from the distant northern borders a howl answered.
The North had heard the call, they were coming and for the first time since she entered this pack, I realized the truth with painful clarity, Elara wasn’t just the heir of a shattered legacy.
She was the storm that would force every kingdom to its knees.
