Chapter 45 The Shattered Legacy
Chapter 45 The Shattered Legacy
ELARA POV
The words on the parchment did not simply glow they breathed, pulsing like a heartbeat trapped beneath the surface. THE FIRST KEY HAS AWAKENED.
My chest tightened, my mark answering with a flash of burning heat beneath my skin. The sensation crawled like fire up my throat, flooding my head with a pressure that made the air wobble around me.
Kaelan’s arm wrapped around my waist instantly. “Elara? Stay with me.” I could feel him, his warmth, his scent and his steady presence holding me together while the ground threatened to rip open beneath my feet.
Caius stepped closer, his expression dark, calculating and heavy with something more than concern.
Guil, regret and old nightmares. “You all need to hear this,” he said quietly. “Especially you, Elara.”
Selena closed the door behind us, sealing the room from prying eyes and hungry ears. The faint scent of dust, old wood and forgotten secrets clung to Corin’s quarters the very place the traitor had hidden his truths while pretending to serve the pack.
I swallowed hard. “What does the message mean? What key?” No one answered immediately.
That silence terrified me more than anything else. Finally, Caius exhaled. “This symbol” he pointed to the mark glowing on the parchment, “is the sigil of a lost bloodline. One the Northern Council spent time trying to erase.”
My pulse spiked painfully. Kaelan stiffened beside me, rage rolling off him in sharp waves.
“Why don’t I know this sigil?”
“Because it was forbidden knowledge,” Caius replied, his gaze dropping. “The Council outlawed even speaking of it.”bSelena crossed her arms, eyes glinting with anger. “They didn’t merely outlaw it. They purged every text, every scroll, every whisper. Only a handful of Alphas ever knew the truth.”
“And you’re one of them,” Kaelan said, voice tightening. Caius didn’t deny it, my throat went dry. “So what does that have to do with my pack?”
Caius looked at me then, really looked and I realized he already knew the answer. He’d known for years. “Elara,” he began slowly, “your birth pack the Ashborne Clan did not fall to rogues as you suspected or Kaelen Pack.”
“My parents and brother” My voice cracked. “Everyone said they were killed”. “That’s what the Council wanted the world to believe.”
Caius’s jaw clenched. “The truth is the a pack from theorth massacred them.”
A cold numbness swept through my body. Kaelan growled so deeply the floorboards trembled. “They murdered her people and blamed rogues to hide their involvement?”
Selena placed a steadying hand on my back.
“We were forbidden from interfering. Forbidden from questioning the Council’s orders.” Forbidden, the word struck like a blade.
My breathing hitched. Suddenly I wasn’t in the room anymore. I was now there as a child now. The flames, the screaming and the glowing mark on my broy chest as plead with me to esct
“Run, Elara. Run and don’t look back.” I blinked hard, but the memory clung like smoke. Kaelan cupped the sides of my face. “Elara. Look at me, focus.”
His voice pulled me back, his presence anchored me. I nodded shakily. Caius stepped toward the table, touching the edge of the parchment with careful fingers.
“Your people were guardians of an ancient magic,” he continued. “Not dark magic or cursed magic but ritual magic older than the packs themselves.”
Selena added, “Magic the Council feared because they couldn’t control it.”Caius nodded.
“They feared your bloodline the ashborne Lineage because prophecy foretold one child would be born bearing the First Seal.”
My stomach twisted, “The seal on my chest,” I whispered. “Yes.” Caius’s voice softened. “You weren’t cursed, Elara. You were chosen, born with a power the Council wanted destroyed.”
Kaelan cursed under his breath. “So they really annihilated her clan.” “They tried,” Caius said. “But they missed one.” Me.
Selena’s gaze gentled. " We hid you here knowingly, even though you thought you were rescued. She stepped aside, allowing Caius to continue.
“The fall of your pack,” Caius said, “was not a simple attack. It was coordinated, premeditated. They had a list of names targeted leaders and elders. It was every member with the mark.” My voice trembled.
“How do you know all this?”
Caius’s expression darkened. “Because I was a young sentinel stationed near your territory at the time. I wasn’t supposed to witness anything. The Council forced us to stand down but I heard everything. The orders, the lies and the slaughter.”
My heart stopped. “You saw what happened?”
“Not everything,” Caius said quietly. “But enough to know the truth was buried and enough to know that someone in the Council wanted the last heir alive.”
Kaelan’s eyes narrowed. "Why?” “For control,” Caius answered. “And because the prophecy wasn’t only about destruction. It was also about restoration.” My breath stuttered.
“What is prophecy exactly?”
Selena stepped forward, lifting the parchment so we could see the faded lines beneath the glowing words.
There was more text hidden until now. The symbols rearranged, forming a sentence in ancient script. Kaelan translated it aloud, voice low, “When the First Key awakens, the Shattered Legacy shall rise.”
A tremor ran through me. Shattered Legacy, my legacy. The story of my people, my past and my blood. Everything I lost before I even had a chance to remember.
Kaelan’s hand found mine, fingers threading through gently, grounding me against the storm inside.
“Elara,” he murmured, “this prophecy it isn’t about your destruction. It’s about your rebirth.”
I felt tears burn behind my eyes. “But why keep it hidden? Why erase an entire pack? Why”
“Because the Council feared a truth greater than their authority,” Caius said. “And because the prophecy mentions a second part.” The air tightened. Kaelan straightened. “What second part?”
Instead of answering, Caius tapped the parchment. A new line of runes began to glow as if reacting to my proximity, Selena gasped softly.
Rhylen, standing at the doorway, went pale. Kaelan pulled me closer instinctively. “What does it say?” I whispered. Caius read it slowly, each word heavy:
“The Second Key stirs when the heir is threatened and the North shall seek to claim what it once broke.” My blood froze.
Kaelan’s grip tightened into something fierce and urgent. “They’re really coming for her.”
Caius nodded grimly. “They’re already on their way again.” Before I could process anything, shouts erupted outside angry, rising, swelling like a storm. Selena’s eyes widened. “That didn’t take long.”
“What’s happening?” I asked, voice trembling.
“The southern pack just learned the Northern Council demanded your transfer,” Selena said.
“They want you escorted immediately.” Kaelan snarled. “They want her dead.”
Caius’s expression hardened. “They won’t get her not while I stand as Alpha.”
