Chapter 68 The Luna Ceremony
Chapter 68 The Luna Ceremony
The full moon rose slowly above Silverpine.
Its light spilled across the clearing in pale silver, catching on frost-covered branches and the dark stone circle where generations of Alpha ceremonies had been held.
Tonight the entire territory was awake.
Torches burned along the outer paths. Wolves filled the clearing shoulder to shoulder, their voices low with anticipation.
Even the air felt different. Lighter somehow. Like the pack itself had finally exhaled after holding its breath for years.
A stillness that felt almost sacred… and dangerous in its own right.
Freda stood inside the preparation room beside Evelyn while another woman adjusted the sleeves of her dark silver ceremonial dress.
The fabric was simple. No heavy jewels. No excessive embroidery.
Freda preferred it that way.
She stared at her reflection for a long moment without speaking.
Five years ago, she had left Silverpine carrying a child and enough fear to choke on.
Tonight she was about to walk back into the center of the territory with every wolf watching her.
Evelyn stepped beside her quietly. "You still have time to run."
Freda snorted softly. "That sounds like terrible advice from the Alpha's mother."
"It's just honesty." Evelyn smiled faintly. "Big moments make people nervous."
Freda looked down at her hands. "I don't think I've stopped being nervous since I got here."
"Good. Means you’re not losing yourself.."
A knock sounded at the door before Freda could answer.
Thomas leaned inside carefully. "We're ready."
His eyes landed on Freda and stayed there for a second.
Then he smiled. "You look terrifyingly official."
"That bad?"
"Worse. Lucian hasn't spoken a full sentence in twenty minutes."
That finally pulled a laugh out of her.
Thomas looked relieved by the sound of it.
Outside, distant drums began to echo through the clearing.
The rhythm of the pack shifting into ceremony.
The ceremony was starting.
Lucian waited near the center stone beneath the full moon.
He wore traditional black ceremonial clothing trimmed with silver at the collar and wrists. The Alpha markings painted across his shoulders looked sharp against his skin.
But his attention stayed fixed on the entrance path.
Nervous energy rolled off him in waves.
"You look sick," Tobias muttered beside him.
"I may actually be sick."
"Good. Builds resilience."
Lucian shot him a look.
Tobias folded his arms. "Relax. She already came back once. That's usually a promising sign."
Before Lucian could answer, the drums changed rhythm.
The crowd shifted.
Then Freda stepped into the clearing.
Silence spread almost instantly. Not quiet, something deeper. Reverent stillness.
Lucian forgot every prepared word he had planned to say.
Moonlight caught in Freda's dark hair as she walked slowly down the stone path. Liam walked beside her in formal black clothing that he clearly hated wearing. He kept tugging at the collar while Evelyn held his hand.
The sight of them together hit Lucian harder than he expected.
His family.Not hidden.Not forbidden.
Openly standing before the entire pack.
Around the clearing, wolves straightened as Freda passed. Some lowered their heads respectfully. Others simply stared.
Several visiting delegates from neighboring packs exchanged quiet murmurs.
An omega Luna.
Most of them had never imagined seeing one.
Freda reached the center stone and stopped in front of Lucian.
For a second neither of them spoke.
Then Liam looked between them impatiently. "Are you both going to just stare at each other all night?"
A ripple of laughter moved through the crowd.
Lucian huffed a quiet laugh. “Apparently not.”
Even Freda smiled at that.
The tension eased slightly.
Diana Cross stepped forward carrying the ceremonial binding knife. The silver blade gleamed beneath the moonlight.
Her voice carried clearly across the clearing. Steady. Absolute. Like law given voice.
"Five years ago, a bond formed beneath this moon in secrecy and fear. Tonight that same bond stands before Silverpine acknowledged by law, by blood, and by the will of this pack."
The clearing remained completely still.
"No rank stands above a fated bond," Diana continued. "No law shall divide what the moon itself has chosen."
Freda felt her throat tighten unexpectedly.
Beside her, Lucian's hand brushed hers briefly. Steady. Warm.
Diana turned toward them. "Do you both come willingly?"
Lucian answered first. "I do."
Freda looked out across the clearing.
She saw Tobias standing near the front beside Thomas.
Victoria Nash watching with quiet satisfaction.
Evelyn holding Liam's shoulder gently.
Wolves who once would not even meet her eyes now standing silently beneath the moon waiting for her answer.
Not because they were forced to.
Because they chose to be here.
Freda looked back at Lucian.
"I do."
The words settled deep in the clearing.
Diana handed Lucian the blade first.
"Blood freely given."
Lucian took Freda's hand carefully. His fingers trembled once before he steadied them.
The blade sliced lightly across his palm first.
Then hers.
Their joined hands closed together immediately.
The reaction was instant.
Golden light burst between their palms so suddenly several wolves gasped aloud.
The light spread upward in slow streams, curling around their arms like living fire.
Several wolves lowered their heads as someone whispered a prayer.
Liam stared with his mouth open.
The bond pulsed once.Twice.Then the entire clearing flooded with gold.
Freda felt the force of it move through her chest like a twin pulse. Warmth crashed through her body so hard her knees almost gave out.
Lucian caught her instantly.
The golden threads surrounding them thickened, brighter than anything she remembered from five years ago in the forest.
Because this time nothing restrained it, fear, secrecy, and shame had all fallen away.
The light rose high enough to illuminate the trees surrounding the clearing. Wolves shielded their eyes. Others simply stared openly in disbelief.
One of the visiting Alphas muttered, stunned, "I've never seen a bond manifest like that."
Neither had anyone else.
Freda looked at Lucian through the gold surrounding them.
His eyes never left hers.
"You all right?" he asked quietly.
She let out a laugh through sudden tears. "Ask me again when I can feel my legs."
His mouth broke into a real smile then. Unrestrained. Young enough for her to briefly see the man he might have been without years of pressure crushing him.
Diana raised her voice over the light.
"Before the full moon and before Silverpine, I recognize Freda Langford as Luna of this pack."
The clearing erupted.
Howls shattered into the night from every direction at once. The sound rolled across the territory like thunder.
Liam jumped violently at the noise before grinning so hard his entire face hurt. He immediately joined in with an uneven young howl that made Tobias laugh outright beside him.
Lucian rested his forehead briefly against Freda's.
"Luna," he said softly, almost like he was still trying to believe it himself.
Freda closed her eyes for one second.
Not because she felt overwhelmed.
Because for the first time in years, she didn't feel like she was bracing for something terrible to happen next.
The golden light slowly faded around them.
But something else remained.
