Chapter 119 CHAPTER 119
Evelyn’s POV
I felt something snap in my head. I moved away, towards the room again.
“I’ll make sure you pay for all these you’ve done to me, Rosaleen. You may have the public pity for now, but the truth will come out soon.”
She laughed, a dry and confident laughter. “You are a fly to me, Evelyn. Something I will swat on the wall. I just wanted to give you a heads up.”
I felt my stomach coil. “Just leave me alone, Rosaleen. Get the fuck away from my life. It isn’t my fault that Alpha Michael doesn’t love you -”
“Wait until he finds out what your mother did to his mother.”
I froze.
She laughed again. “Perhaps you thought you had won a ticket to a life of eternal luxury, posing as the wife of Alpha Michael Greywood. You just watch how fast he switches when he finds out what your family did to his.”
My blood ran cold and I felt my lips go dry. I leaned against the wall. How did she know? I couldn’t even muster the words to deny it. I just parted my lips and remained frozen.
“Still in shock?” she asked, her voice ringing with excitement. “Don’t stay for too long. It’s time to witness the final fall of the Moons.”
The line went dead.
My heart was beating wildly. I felt something burning in my eyes. I stumbled back into the room and rushed into the closet. I had to call my mum and warn them. They had to leave immediately.
My hands trembled as I flipped the phone open and I tapped on the screen. The call tried to connect and I waited in fright. It rang without connecting.
“Pick up, mum.”
I tried her again. No answer.
Aunt Maya was also not responding.
My head felt dizzy. I leaned against the wall and slid down to the floor. I typed a text to both of them hurriedly. They had to leave town tonight. If they would have any chance of surviving this new scandal, they had to be out of town.
“Evelyn?”
His voice shook me to my bones. The phone in my hand dropped in fright. “You frightened me,” I said, avoiding his eyes.
“What is wrong?” he asked.
I leaned against my bent knees and tried to get up. He bent close to me and pulled me up. I averted my eyes from his.
“You are sweating,” he said. “What is the matter?”
I looked up at him, parted my lips to speak and tears rolled down my eyes. How could I tell him what was making my heart beat so fast and my body tremble?
He pulled me closer to him, wrapping his arms around me. “Evelyn, I’m sorry about this morning and what my father did. I promise you, nothing will happen to you. I’ll protect you always.”
I let my body relax against him as his hug tightened.
“I’ll deal with this," he said again. His hand rubbed gently over my back. “Are you still up to go to the hospital?”
I shook my head. I needed to do a couple of things as soon as possible. Then I had to make sure Alpha Michael signed that contract before the news arrived.
“No,” I whispered. “I’ll cancel the appointment. Reschedule.”
His fingers grazed through my hair. “We should spend some time together today. I’ll cancel all my appointments at the office.”
“No,” I said too quickly. “No, you don't have to. I want to visit my mum. I just remembered that we were supposed to spend some time together today.”
He frowned. “Is this punishment?”
“No. No,” I replied.
He cupped my chin and lifted my face. I could only maintain eye contact for a few seconds. “I hate it when you can’t stand me, Evelyn. And I know you can’t stand me right now. What can I do to make you forgive me?”
I thought about mentioning the contract, but I realised it would sound too hasty. I forced a smile. “A lot will come to test us, Alpha Michael. I want you to remember this promise you have made to me.”
I pulled myself from his embrace and began to walk away. He caught my hand. “Why don’t you trust me when I say I will protect you, Evelyn? Even when no one believed you, I did. I…” His breath hitched. “I would give my life for you. Easily.”
He meant it. After all, he had risked everything he owned by announcing our marriage days before his father’s election.
“I trust you,” I whispered.
I drove as soon as I could to mum’s house. I called her again and she picked up this time. I sighed in relief.
“I’ve been calling all day,” I said, stepping on the gas. “Where have you been?”
“Maya,” she said. “We got a call from Calderon.”
“What did he want?” I asked, hoping there wasn’t more trouble.
“Let’s talk at home,” she replied.
“I’m on the way,” I said.
When I arrived, mum was pacing in the room while aunt Maya was sitting listlessly on one of the dining chairs. They looked like they had just heard the news of the death of a loved one.
“What happened?” I asked, dropping my bag on the couch and walking towards them.
“Viktor called,” mum said.
I looked at aunt Maya. “What did he want?”
“He wants to make a deal,” Maya answered, looking at me. “He’ll protect us. In exchange we have to give him the Greywoods on a platter.”
I stared at her, then at mum.
“What do you mean?”
Mum walked towards me. “Viktor Calderon was able to intercept a broadcast about our involvement in Alpha Raymond’s wife’s death,” she said and my heart dropped. “He has promised to keep us safe, only if we ensure that he becomes Mayor and give him damning information about the Greywoods.”
I blinked.
“He wants information that can ruin their public image and send any of them to jail,” Maya added.
