Chapter 118 CHAPTER 118
Evelyn’s POV
I rolled to my side as my nose was tingled by the scent of something warm and sweet. I opened my eyes and the door leading to the terrace was open. The long white curtain blew gently and behind it was Alpha Michael, dressed in shorts alone with a small towel flung over his shoulder. I watched him as he moved, glad to be woken up to such a view.
After watching him for a few minutes, I leaned up. “You cook?” I asked.
He turned around, then wiped his hands with the towel. “On some good days,” he replied, a glint in his eyes. “For special people.”
I pushed myself out of the bed, and my feet hit cold tiles. I walked towards him and laced my hand through his arm. He was making some barbeque. It looked like something I wanted to eat.
“Smells really nice,” I remarked.
He cut a piece and slipped it inside my mouth. It tasted perfect. “Wow,” I said. “I’ve never tasted anything as tasteful as this.”
We had breakfast in bed together and we tried to talk about things without steering into sensitive matters. He had slept on the couch like he mentioned and I was craving to have his arms around me when I slept alone on the bed.
“Rosaleen is getting discharged today,” he said, squeezing my hand and the food in my mouth suddenly lost its taste. We had recieved the notification from her lawyer. There were charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder.
“She’ll lose the case,” he said.
But I imagined the jury looking at me like a killer because of my identity. I doubted that I would be able to walk away from this without scars.
“The nurse?” I asked.
The subjects we had hoped to avoid were now being discussed, and I was gradually losing my appetite and excitement.
“I’m sorry, Evelyn,” he said.
I looked at him. “Why? Why are you sorry?”
He squeezed my hand again. “It was Alpha Raymond,” he said.
My body tensed. I had suspected him but perhaps I had hoped that he wouldn’t stoop that low.
“Your father was trying to kill my baby?” I asked.
“Alpha Raymond is … He’s out of control.”
I frowned. “So are you going to take it up?”
He stared at me. "What do you mean?”
“Aren’t you going to charge him? He tried to kill my child. That should attract some fine at least. Or a couple of months. Or is he too powerful for justice?”
“Evelyn …”
“Micahel.”
“I can’t possibly do that to my father. This is something that would be settled within the four corners of this mansion,” he said.
I moved away from him. “Of course, you would pick your family over me. What if I was hurt? I could have been killed. The media is always silent when an injustice is done against me, but very quick to spread lies about me and my family.”
“Evelyn, you are a part of this family.”
“Will I receive this same grace if I tried to kill Alpha Raymond? Would we all sit in the living room and discuss my motive? Settle it within the four corners of this mansion?”
He was silent.
“I thought so too,” I said, pushing myself out of the bed. “I’ve lost my appetite.”
I picked a robe and wrapped it around my body. Then I walked out of the room. I wasn’t sure where I was going, but I just wanted to be away from him.
How could someone hurt you and make you so damn happy at the same time?
I sat in the kitchen, sipping some hot coffee. I had endured enough public shaming because I got associated with the Greywoods. I couldn’t fathom how Rosaleen’s case was able to make it to court. There was no evidence at all that I was in the building. I hated everything about these manipulative people.
“Fucking bastards,” I cursed.
“Are you angry at a cup of coffee?”
I turned around and saw Jasper standing in the doorway. I shrugged my shoulders and turned away. He wasn’t a favourite either. He was just as bad.
He walked in. “You are in a bad mood.”
I sipped my coffee slowly to avoid answering him. Maybe he would see that I was not in the mood and let me be.
He didn’t.
“I was wrong about you,” he continued.
I arched my brows.
“You don’t look polished on the surface,” he said. “But you are more noble than anyone in this household.”
“Are you trying to get on my nerves too?” I asked.
“No,” he said. “I’m just saying the truth. I messed up a lot because I was quick to judge everyone by popular opinion. You. Rosaleen. Tamara.” He sighed. “I’m learning the hard way not to judge anyone who you don’t really know.”
I softened a bit. “I’m happy you can learn things from this, Jasper. I’m sure if you have another chance with Tamara, you’ll treat her better.”
I dropped the empty cup and rose up, pushing the chair backwards. “I have to be on my way. Thanks for making today less shitty.”
When I returned to the room, alpha Michael was gone. I grumbled and reached for my phone. There was a notification on it. I was due for my antenatal appointment.
I tossed the phone on the bed. Today couldn't just get any shittier. I took a quick shower and changed into new clothes. Alpha Micahel was back.
“Are you ready?” he asked.
I was still annoyed. “For what?"
“Your appointment,” he replied.
“I…” I stopped. “I’ll be with you soon.”
“I’ll be downstairs,” he said and kissed me genlty on the forehead.
I hated the way it made me feel.
Minutes later, I was ready and a call came into my phone. I accepted it and pressed the phone against my ear as I walked out of the room.
“Hello?”
“It’s been a while,” the caller said, and I recognised her voice immediately.
