Chapter 120 CHAPTER 120
Michael’s POV
Jasper collapsed on the couch, sighing deeply. He was still not his usual self, but he looked a bit cheerful.
“You look happy,” I said, scrolling through the report the company’s secretary had sent. I had decided to work from home. Then I would pick up Evelyn from her mum’s place by evening.
“I got a baggage off my chest. I feel lighter and happier,” he replied.
I cocked my brows, still not looking at him. “What is it about?”
“I spoke to Evelyn Moon,” he said and I looked at him this time. “I apologised for misjudging her. She’s special, Alpha Michael. I guess I couldn't see it. But you did.”
I watched him. “What made you change your mind?”
He scratched his scalp, ruffling his head. “It was everything that happened when she was taken to Barcelona by that psycho. You kept your faith in her, despite everything. She also… She was there for you even when we didn’t deserve her forgiveness. It taught me a lot, Alpha Michael. Unfortunately, the scoundrel has broken away from jail. Heard he escaped last week.”
“Xavier escaped?” I asked.
He nodded, as though it was just a casual news on a sunday evening.
“Why am I just hearing about this? How could he have gotten out?”
“There was a prison break,” he said, and then realized why I was panicking. “Shit! He may go after Evelyn again.”
I rose up, picking my coat.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“I’m not about to give Xavier another opportunity to get to my wife. And if he is in this city, I must make sure he’s caught,” I replied. “He must pay for his crimes.”
I was already at the door when it hit me. “Did you say he was out since last week?” I asked.
“Yes,” Jasper replied, rising up and walking towards me.
I realised immediately that he had been the one in Evelyn’s office. He was likely there to attack her and Rosaleen ran into him.
I pulled the door open and hurried out of the house. I called Evelyn.
“Where are you?” I asked. “Did you get there?”
“Yes… yes,” she replied. “Is there a problem?”
“No,” I answered sharply. “Don’t go anywhere. I’ll be picking you up soon. I’ll tell you when we see.”
“Michael -”
“I’ll talk to you when I come,” I said. “Don’t leave the house.”
I hurried to the car and the driver started it. I instructed him to drive to the hospital. Jasper sat beside me, speechless. He didn’t need to ask me, he knew what I was thinking and why I was going to see Rosaleen.
—
When I turned the door handle and walked in, she was sitting up in bed. Her back was to the door, so she turned to see who was coming in. Her eyes met mine and they lit up in excitement.
“Alpha Michael," she said. “It’s good to see you here. Although, I'm quite annoyed that you are just visiting for the first time.”
She glanced at Jasper only briefly.
I ignored her statement. “It was Xavier, wasn’t it?” I asked.
I saw the flicker in her eyes. She knew I was telling the truth. “What do you mean?” she asked.
“Xavier did this to you, and instead of telling the truth, you decided to implicate Evelyn in this.”
Her face dropped in disappointment. I wasn’t sure why she expected that I had come to see her because I wanted to be friendly.
“I let everything you did to Evelyn Moon go scot free because of the relationship we had before, Rosaleen. But you have stretched my patience thin. You will receive a letter from the legal team at Greywood, as well as from Evelyn Moon. I hope you recover fast, because you will be spending a long time in court.”
I turned around.
“Wait until you hear what her mother did to your mother,” she said, her voice low and rough. “You wouldn’t be here acting all so noble.”
I stopped. I didn't know why. The mention of my mother’s name was not something I had expected from Rosaleen.
“Enough of your lies,” Jasper spat out. “You’ve ruined our lives because of your greed.”
“At least I didn't kill anyone,” she fired back. “Ask Evelyn Moon. She knows the story. Tell her to tell you how her bloodthirsty mother went into hiding because she killed the pregnant wife of Alpha Raymond Greywood.”
I felt blood rush to my head and for a moment, it felt as though the room was spinning. The smell of the burnt food hit my nose and the image of my mother lying dead in a pool of blood flooded my vision. I crossed the room towards her, filled with rage. I grabbed her by the throat before I could stop myself and my chest burnt with an anger I didn't know I still had.
“Don’t you dare speak of my mother, you filthy lying -”
She didn’t struggle out of my grip. She just smiled and it irritated me. Jasper reached me and pulled me from her.
“She isn’t worth this, Alpha Michael. She is a liar and she’ll live a lonely life away from us all.”
She coughed a little. “I might have lied many times,” she said. “But this isn't a lie. Ask Evelyn.”
I pulled the door and walked out of the room. Jasper walked beside me. I was troubled. Rosaleen spoke with so much confidence. She wouldn’t make up a story that way if she didn’t know something about it.
“You don’t believe her, do you?” he asked.
“I’m trying not to believe her, Jasper," I said. “I don’t want a world where what she said is true. The possibility of it being true is making me lose my mind already.”
“Do you think Evelyn would keep this away from you if she knew?” he asked.
I wanted to say no, but I thought of her statement that afternoon in the closet. Perhaps, Rosaleen was not lying this time.
