Chapter 132: The Ambush
Chapter 132: The Ambush
The morning of the plan dawned grey and cold, the kind of day that seeped into your bones and reminded you that winter was waiting just around the corner. I stood at the edge of the tree line, hidden among the ancient oaks, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. Beside me, Lily pressed close, her warmth a small comfort against the chill and the fear.
"He's going to be okay," she whispered. "Kaelen's stronger than he looks."
"I know." I kept my eyes fixed on the clearing below, where a young figure waited alone. "I just wish there was another way."
"There isn't. You know that."
I did know. We had debated for days, considered every alternative, weighed every risk. In the end, this was the only option that made sense. Kaelen would allow himself to be captured, drawing the cult into the open. Xavier and his warriors would be hidden nearby, ready to strike. Simple. Clean. Terrifying.
Through the bond, I felt Xavier. He was positioned on the far side of the clearing, hidden among the rocks. His focus was absolute, a blade honed to lethal sharpness. Beneath it, I felt his fear, the same fear that was clawing at my own chest. Fear for Kaelen. Fear for the pack. Fear that something would go wrong and the boy who had finally found a home would be lost forever.
‘He'll be fine,’ I sent down the bond. ‘You'll make sure of it.’
‘Always.’
The minutes crawled past. Kaelen stood in the center of the clearing, his posture deliberately vulnerable, his shoulders hunched. He looked small from here, young, fragile. A boy alone in a world that had never wanted him.
Then the shadows moved.
They emerged from the trees like ghosts, silent and sudden. Wolves, a dozen of them, their eyes gleaming with fanatical light. They surrounded Kaelen before he could react, cutting off any chance of escape. He stumbled back, his hands raised, his face the picture of terror.
He was good. Even knowing it was an act, my heart clenched.
The cult leader stepped forward. She was a woman, tall and gaunt, her face twisted with a devotion that bordered on madness. Her eyes when they landed on Kaelen held something that made my skin crawl. Hunger. Worship. Possession.
"The son of our god," she breathed. Her voice carried through the clearing, cold and reverent. "At last. The blood of Viktor, returned to us."
Kaelen's voice shook. "Please. I don't want any part of this. I never knew him. He was nothing to me."
"His blood is everything." The woman gestured, and the cultists closed in. "You will bring him back to us. Your life for his. A fair trade."
Kaelen stumbled back, but there was nowhere to go. The cultists surrounded him, their hands reaching, their eyes burning. He looked small among them, helpless, a lamb surrounded by wolves.
I felt Xavier's focus sharpen through the bond. Waiting. Watching. Timing.
The cult leader raised her hand, dark magic gathering at her fingertips. The same sickening energy I remembered from Viktor, pulsing with stolen life. She reached for Kaelen's face, her touch just inches away—
Xavier struck.
He erupted from the rocks like a force of nature, his massive wolf form a blur of fury and fang. The cultists barely had time to scream before he was among them, tearing through their ranks with lethal precision. Behind him, the warriors surged from hiding, Tristan and Seraphine leading the charge.
The clearing exploded into chaos.
I watched from the tree line, my hand pressed to my chest, my breath caught in my throat. Through the bond, I felt Xavier's fury, his focus, his absolute determination. He moved through the cultists like death incarnate, each strike precise, each movement calculated. He wasn't the monster of his past, lost to bloodlust. He was the Alpha, protecting his own.
The cultists were fanatics, but they weren't warriors. They fell before the onslaught, their dark magic useless against wolves who had faced worse. Within minutes, half of them were dead, the rest captured and bound.
The leader, cornered, tried to summon her magic one last time. Dark energy gathered at her fingertips, aimed directly at Xavier's back.
Seraphine was faster.
She moved with a speed I hadn't known she possessed, her blade slicing through the air. The magic dissipated, the woman's spell broken before it could land. Seraphine stood over her, her expression cold, her blade at the woman's throat.
"Viktor taught me all his tricks," Seraphine said quietly. "You think you know dark magic? I lived in it for years. I know how to break it."
The woman's face twisted with hatred, but she didn't move. She couldn't. Seraphine had her, and she knew it.
In the center of the clearing, Kaelen stood frozen, untouched. His face was pale, his body trembling, but he was alive. He was whole. He had played his part perfectly.
Xavier shifted back to human form, crossing to the boy in three long strides. His hands gripped Kaelen's shoulders, checking for injuries, his eyes scanning for any sign of harm.
"I'm okay," Kaelen breathed. "I'm okay."
Xavier pulled him into a rough embrace, the kind that held all the fear and relief he couldn't put into words. Kaelen clung to him, his body shaking, tears streaming down his face.
I was moving before I realized it, running down the slope toward them. Lily followed, her presence a warm shadow at my back. By the time I reached the clearing, the cultists were being led away, the dead being gathered, the chaos settling into order.
Xavier looked up as I approached. His eyes met mine, and through the bond, I felt everything. The fear, the relief, the desperate love that drove him. He opened his arms, and I walked into them without hesitation.
"You did it," I whispered against his chest. "You saved him."
"We did it." His lips pressed to my hair. "All of us."
I pulled back just enough to look at him. His face was streaked with blood, his eyes bright with unshed tears. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
I kissed him, in the middle of the clearing, surrounded by the aftermath of battle. I kissed him with everything I had, pouring my love, my relief, my gratitude into that single point of contact. He kissed me back just as fiercely, his hands fisting in my hair, pulling me closer.
When we finally broke apart, both breathless, he rested his forehead against mine.
"It's over," he whispered. "For now."
"For now." I traced the line of his jaw, feeling the strength beneath the softness. "But we're ready for whatever comes next."
He smiled, that rare, beautiful smile that was only for me.
Around us, the pack began the work of recovery. The captured cultists were taken for questioning. The wounded were tended. And Kaelen, the lost heir who had faced his father's legacy and won, was wrapped in blankets and led toward the village.
The ambush had worked. The cult was broken. And for one precious moment, the world was at peace.
