The Cruel Offer

The Cruel Offer
Elowen

The taste of blood filled my mouth—metallic and warm. My cheek burned where Kieran had struck me, the pain radiating outward in pulsing waves. The cold stone floor beneath my knees had numbed my legs hours ago, but I barely noticed it now. All I could focus on was the hatred in Kieran's eyes as he towered over me, a stranger wearing the face of someone I once trusted.

The heavy door creaked open, and Thalia glided in, her presence filling the damp cell with a suffocating energy. She looked between us, a smile playing at her lips as she noticed the fresh blood on my face.

"Your mate is here. Just as I had said, feelings make us weak, and that was his downfall."

Her words hit me like a physical blow. Kaius—here? My heart thundered in my chest, fear unlike anything I'd ever known coursing through my veins.

"Don't you dare harm him." The words came out hoarse, my throat raw from hours of screaming that no one had heard.

Thalia circled me slowly, her footsteps echoing against the stone walls. "I guess you would want to see him, right?" Her voice was honey-sweet with malice.

Hope and dread warred within me. To see Kaius—to know he was alive—was all I wanted. But what condition would he be in? What had they done to him?

"Let me out." I pulled against the restraints cutting into my wrists, feeling fresh blood trickle down my fingers. My wings strained against my back, unable to fully emerge in my weakened state.

"I'll do that, but first, we need to make things clear." Thalia crouched before me, her ageless face inches from mine. "In whatever you do, you will not try to escape this place. Got it?"

Her voice took on that resonant quality that bypassed all resistance. I felt the command sink into my bones like a poison, my body acknowledging the order even as my mind screamed in rebellion. A cold sensation spread from my wrist—the mark she'd left on me burning anew as her control solidified.

"Got it," I replied mechanically, hating myself for the weakness.

She nodded, satisfied, and unlocked my restraints. My arms fell limply to my sides, shoulders screaming in protest after being bound for so long. I struggled to my feet, knees buckling beneath me. I caught myself against the wall, refusing to collapse in front of her. I would not show weakness. Not now.

The corridors she led me through seemed endless—dark, twisting passages that descended deeper underground. The air grew colder, damper, carrying a scent that made my heart race. Kaius's scent—his familiar pine and winter smell that I'd know anywhere—but tainted with something wrong, something sickly that made my stomach turn.

"There is your mate," Thalia announced, stopping before a heavy metal door reinforced with silver.

My heart hammered against my ribs as she turned the key. "Let me in," I demanded, pushing past her the moment the lock clicked.

The scene beyond the door would haunt me forever.

Kaius sat strapped to a metal chair in the center of the room, his magnificent body reduced to a shadow of itself. His skin had a gray undertone, black veins visible beneath the surface like a dark web spreading across his body. Tubes ran from his arms to machines that pumped a viscous black liquid directly into his bloodstream.

"Kaius! Kaius, look at me!" I rushed to him, falling to my knees before his chair.

His amber eyes, once so bright and fierce, now looked dull and distant. He turned toward me, but there was no recognition in his gaze—only pain and confusion. His lips, cracked and pale, moved without sound.

The scent of wolf's bane hung heavy in the air, mixing with the metallic tang of blood and the sharp chemical smell of the machines keeping him alive. The sight of him—broken, weakened, tortured—tore a hole through my chest.

I whirled on Thalia, rage overcoming fear. "What did you do to him?"

"Me? No, this time it hadn't been me behind this." She examined her nails casually, as if we were discussing the weather rather than the systematic torture of a man. "This is all Soren and Caleb's doing. The boys have been busy, and they believe they've found something that could affect the Lycan—how wolf's bane affects wolves, and from the looks of things, it worked."

Horror washed through me as I realized what she meant. The wolf's bane extract—the same poison she'd tried to make me use on Kaius—was now being pumped directly into his system in concentrated form.

I turned back to Kaius, gently placing my palm against his clammy cheek. His skin felt wrong—too cold, too human. The wolf that had always burned beneath his surface was fading, being systematically destroyed by the poison flowing through his veins.

"Please stop this; you could kill him." I couldn't keep the desperation from my voice, the panic rising like a tide in my chest.

"I don't want him dead either; I want a worse faith for him." Thalia moved to stand beside me, her cold fingers trailing along Kaius's shoulder possessively. "I want to take away his wolf side and let him live the rest of his life as a human, but to convince the others to go with that choice, it would take some serious... effort."

My worst nightmares were manifesting before me. Every chilling detail from my dreams – Kaius taken, broken, reduced to something less than himself – was no longer just a terrifying vision. It was happening now, a horrifying truth slamming into me.

I looked at the tubes feeding the black poison into his body.

"The weapon won't kill him; it would only take away his wolf."

I clung to this realization, desperate for any sliver of hope. I could handle Kaius losing his powers—but not his life. Never his life.

"What do I have to give in exchange?"

Thalia's smile widened, satisfaction gleaming in her ancient eyes. "Now you seem to understand me better. You will give your life for his. To appease Soren and Caleb, I would have to grant them something in exchange for Kaius's life."

A strange calm settled over me. My life for his. The choice was immediate, instinctive. I'd give myself a thousand times over to save him.

But even as I opened my mouth to agree, something in her expression told me it wouldn't be that simple.

"You don't need my consent to kill me, Thalia, and we all know that, so tell me what exactly do you want."

"Fine." She circled around Kaius's chair like a predator savoring its kill. "I want you to go up to Kaius and tell him everything. Tell him how you killed those soldiers and the little girl; tell him how you hate him; and better make it real."

Understanding dawned, cold and terrible.

"This is not about appeasing Soren and Caleb, is it? This is about you and appeasing your own selfish desires." I stared at her, disgust and rage burning through me.

"Well, once again, you've got me." She didn't even try to deny it. "You are the one person Kaius loves with all his heart and soul; I want him broken, and I fear taking his wolf wouldn't do that, but you..." Her voice dropped to a near-whisper. "You are the key to making him miserable. I want him to hate you, even in your death, he would be filled with hate at your memory; but in exchange I'll spare his life and he would get to live his days BUT as a human. This is my offer, so it's up to you to make the choice."
