Chapter 181: The Backlash
Chapter 181: The Backlash
Sierra's POV
The guards took Evelyn away. I watched her disappear through the heavy wooden doors. My chest felt tight.
The main hall was so quiet I could hear my own breathing. Then someone coughed. Another person shuffled their feet. The silence broke immediately.
"This is a mistake." The voice came from the left side of the hall. I turned to look. Thomas Gray stood there. He was older. "Our Luna is too soft. Too forgiving. This girl tried to destroy our Alpha family and now we're sending her on vacation?"
Other voices joined him. "She worked with a traitor!" someone shouted. "She deserves exile at the very least!" another person yelled.
My stomach twisted into knots. I looked at Adrian. His jaw was clenched. His eyes were dark with anger but he didn't move. He was waiting for me to handle this myself.
I stepped forward. My legs felt weak but I forced myself to stand tall. "Evelyn is going to a facility where she'll get real help, not a vacation. She'll work every day to fix what's broken inside her."
Thomas Gray laughed. It was a cold sound. "Work to fix herself? While she lives in comfort? While we pay for her care with our pack resources?"
A woman stepped forward. Her name was Patricia Hunt. She had three children and a husband who died defending our borders. "My husband never got a second chance, Luna. He died protecting this pack from people like Marcus who Evelyn helped." Her voice cracked. "Why does she get mercy when good people get graves?"
My throat felt like someone was squeezing it. I understood her pain. "Your husband was a hero, Patricia. Nothing can change that but punishing Evelyn won't bring him back. It won't heal your hurt or honor his memory."
Patricia's eyes filled with tears. "Then what will? Tell me what makes this right."
I walked closer to her. The crowd parted to let me through. "Nothing makes it right. Nothing can but we can choose what kind of pack we want to be. Do we want to be the pack that throws people away? Or do we want to be the pack that fights for healing even when it's hard?"
Patricia looked at me for a long moment. Then she turned and walked away. Other people followed her out of the hall.
Elder Maya cleared her throat. "The Luna has made her decision. Those who disagree may voice their concerns to the council but the matter is settled."
More people left. Some slammed the doors behind them. When the noise finally stopped only about half the pack remained.
Adrian moved to my side. He put his hand on my back. "You did the right thing," he whispered. I wasn't sure.
My decision had split the pack down the middle and created anger where there should have been unity.
"Did I?" I asked quietly. "Look at them. Half of them hate me now."
Ben walked up to us. His face was serious. "They don't hate you, Luna. They're scared. When people are scared they get angry. Give them time."
But I could see it in their eyes. The disappointment, the judgment. Some people thought I was weak. They thought I'd made a terrible mistake.
That night I couldn't sleep. I lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Adrian was next to me. His breathing was slow and steady but I knew he wasn't asleep either.
"Talk to me," he said softly. I rolled over to face him. "What if they're right? What if I'm being too soft?"
Adrian reached out and touched my face. His hand was warm. "You're being exactly who you are. The woman I fell in love with. The woman who sees the good in people even when they don't deserve it."
I closed my eyes. "But what if Evelyn doesn't change? What if she comes back worse than before?"
He pulled me closer. "Then we deal with it. Together like we always do." I wanted to believe him but doubt kept creeping in like shadows under a door.
"Half the pack walked out today Adrian. They don't trust my judgment anymore."
The next three weeks were very hard. Some pack members wouldn't look at me when I walked by. Others whispered when they thought I couldn't hear.
Thomas Gray started holding meetings at his house. Small gatherings of people who thought I'd made a mistake. Ben warned me about it but I told him to let them talk.
Then one morning Dr. Mara came to our house. She was holding an envelope. "This arrived from the facility," she said.
Her eyes were bright. "It's from Evelyn." My hands shook as I took the letter. Adrian stood behind me.
The letter was written in Evelyn's careful handwriting. "Dear Sierra, I don't know if you'll read this but I needed to write it anyway. I've been here for three weeks now. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. Every day I have to talk about my feelings. About why I did what I did. The doctors here say I have something called obsessive love disorder. That my feelings for Adrian were never healthy and never real love. Just obsession and fear of being alone."
I kept reading. My eyes moved faster across the page. "I wasted so many years loving someone who didn't love me back. Hating someone who never did anything wrong to me. You didn't deserve what I did Sierra. Neither did Adrian or Alexander. I'm working every day to understand why I became the person I became. I told Derek about the baby. I don't know if he'll respond but at least he knows the truth now. Thank you for giving me this chance. Thank you for believing I could be better. I won't waste it. I promise."
I looked up at Adrian. His eyes were soft, proud. "You were right," he said quietly.
Dr. Mara smiled. "This is real progress Sierra. The facility director says Evelyn is one of their most engaged patients."
"Can I write back?" I asked.
Dr. Mara nodded. "They encourage it. Support from the outside helps patients stay motivated."
That afternoon I called a pack meeting and held up the letter. "Three weeks ago I made a choice that many of you disagreed with. I chose mercy over punishment. Redemption over revenge." I paused.
"This morning I received this letter from Evelyn. She's working hard, facing her demons and taking real steps toward healing and she told Derek about the baby."
I walked to the center. "I know some of you think I'm weak. That I made the wrong call but I believe people can change. I have to believe it because if I don't then what hope is there for any of us? We've all made mistakes. The question is do we deserve a chance to make it right?"
Elder Maya stood up.
"Our Luna has shown wisdom beyond her years. She has shown us that true strength isn't about crushing our enemies. It's about lifting up those who fall." Slowly some of the people who had walked out three weeks ago started nodding. Not everyone but enough.
