Chapter 14 Chapter 14

Myla's POV

I held his gaze for a second. Then nodded once and we moved carefully through the crowd, making sure no one noticed us or followed.

Kyle led the way.

“I’ve been here before,” he muttered quietly as we turned down a less crowded hallway. “Not supposed to be, but…”

“You still came,” I said.

He glanced back briefly. “Curiosity.”

We stopped in front of a plain and unmarked door.

“This is it,” he said. “The records room.”

He pushed it open slowly and no alarm or sound followed, then we stepped inside.

The room was filled with rows and rows of files with shelves stretching across the room, neatly organized.

Everything looked… normal.

Kyle shut the door carefully behind us and moved first, pulling out a file. “These are student logs from now and past years,” he said while I grabbed another.

Records. Names. Dates. Progress reports. Everything was cleanly arranged, structured with nothing out of place.

We went through more. And more. And more.

“See?” Kyle said after a while. “Nothing.”

I shook my head slowly. “No… this is too clean.”

“What do you mean?”

“This place—everything—it doesn’t feel like this,” I said. “There has to be more.”

“Or maybe there isn’t,” he countered and I didn’t respond.

I kept looking, pulling more files out and flipping through pages faster now, searching and scanning everything my hand touched.
Till my hand stopped on a particular file, it was different from the rest, thicker with no clear label on the front.

I opened it slowly and froze.

The words staring back at me didn't make sense, they didn't add up.

It was my name, at least it was supposed to be.

Myla.

But it didn’t stop there, there was more. A second name attached to it, a surname.

And it wasn't Carter. Not anything I had ever known.

My fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the file as the letters stared back at me.

It was unfamiliar and looked every bit wrong. And yet—

It was mine.

My fingers tightened around the file as the letters didn’t move an inch, didn’t blur.

They stayed exactly where they were, staring back at me like they had always been there—like I was the one who had just been too blind to see them.

Myla.

And beneath it—

Ford.

My breath hitched slightly.

Ford.

The name sank deeply to the wrong edges of my chest. It didn’t belong to me and yet… it somehow was mine.

It flowed too well, sounded too natural,.too… right.

I flipped through the pages, reading each line and feeling my heart drop further at each page.

“What is it?” Kyle asked, stepping closer, and I didn’t answer immediately.

I just turned the file slightly towards him and his eyes dropped to it.

He read it once. Then again. And he pulled his brows together. “Okay?”

I looked at him now, widening my eyes. “But that’s not my name.”

He blinked. “What?”

“That’s not my name,” I repeated, my voice lower this time. “That’s not my surname.”

Kyle exhaled lightly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Myla, there are probably hundreds of people with the same first name—”

“This isn’t just a name,” I cut in, flipping the page open and shoved the file closer to him.

“Look.”

He hesitated, then took it with his eyes scanning the page.

I watched his expression change slowly as piece by piece, it all fell into place..

“Age,” he muttered under his breath. “You’re 17?” He asked with a raised brow and I rolled my eyes.

“Turning 18 in a few months, but that's not the point, Kyle,” I huffed.

He chuckled, then his eyes moved lower.

“Physical description,” he muttered, then looked up at me. “I guess these actually match you.”

The details were too specific. Too precise. Like whoever had written it had been looking directly at me.

Kyle went quiet. Then looked up at me. “Okay,” he admitted slowly. “That’s weird.”

“Weird?” I repeated, my voice tightening. “Kyle, this is me.”

“It could still be a coincidence—”

“How?” I snapped.

He flinched slightly at my tone.

“How is that a coincidence?” I continued, pointing at the page. “Same age. Same description. Same everything—and then this name just appears out of nowhere?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

I stepped closer. “You need to be realistic for once.”

His jaw tightened slightly. “And you need to calm down.”

“No,” I said immediately. “No, don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Don’t stand there and act like this is normal,” I said. “Because it’s not.”

Silence followed as the tension between us stretched thin.

Then he exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. “Okay—fine. Let’s say it’s not normal. What do you want to do about it?”

I didn’t hesitate. “We keep looking.”

His head snapped towards me. “No.”

“Yes.”

“No,” he repeated firmly. “We’ve already done too much. We’re not even supposed to be here.”

“There’s more,” I said, glancing at the shelves. “There has to be more.”

“And if there is?” He challenged. “What if we find something we’re not supposed to, what do we do?”

“Then we deal with it.”

“That’s not how this works,” he said, his voice lowering. “There are rules for a reason.”

“Or control,” I shot back and that made him pause.

He held it for a second, but that did it for me.

I stepped back slightly. “You can go if you want.”

He pulled his brows together. “What?”

“I said you can go,” I repeated. “I’m not stopping you.”

“You’re serious right now?”

I didn’t answer, cause it was clear I was.

He stared at me for a long second. Then scoffed lightly, shaking his head. “Unbelievable.”

“Yeah—”

“No,” he cut in. “You do whatever you want.”

His tone wasn’t loud, but it was sharp enough to pass the message.

“I’m not getting dragged into this any further,” he added, and with that, he turned and walked out.

The door closed behind him with a soft click, and just like that, I was left alone.

For a moment, I didn’t move as the silence pressed in slightly.

Then I looked back down at the file in my hands.

Myla Ford.

The name still didn’t make sense. But it didn’t feel like a mistake either.

It felt well placed, intentional, like I was the one just finding out now.

My grip tightened around the file again before I set it aside.

If there was one file like this, there had to be more.

I moved through the shelves faster now, pulling files out and opening them fast, scanning through each and every one of them for any description or note that stood out.

Mos
t of them were the same, just looking normal with normal back stories and casual remarks.

Everything looked well structured and nothing out of place.

Until, I paused as another name caught my eye.
