Has he changed his mind
Has he changed his mind
SERENA’S POV
“This came in for you, ma’am.”
A female domestic worker clothed in the usual uniform stood in front of me some seconds ago. Her head was bowed and her hand stretched forth in my direction.
I took a brown envelope from her and stared at it for a moment. Shaun used to send me letters in a brown envelope. Could it be that this was from him?
“Look at me,” I ordered. I had questions for her, and I preferred that she looked me in the eye.
“Are you new here?”
“Yes ma’am,” she responded.
After I caught a glimpse of her face, I knew she was new. I had never seen her before, and it had been months since I had been in the mansion.
“I resumed work two days ago,” she cooed. I had not asked for extra information.
“Who brought this?”
“A young man. I did not see what he looked like because he wore a cap and did not look at my face while we spoke,” she responded.
“Where did you both meet? I mean, where did he give it to you?”
“Somewhere around the training ground. It seemed he had been waiting for you to show up there for some time, so when he saw me, he did not…”
“How tall was he?” I interrupted. I liked that she was giving me full details, but I had grown impatient.
“One hundred and ninety eight centimeters. I said that because my brother is one hundred and ninety eight centimeters tall and they are of the same height.”
What I was thinking might be true, but I could not be certain yet. If the domestic worker in front of me had seen his face, things would have been different.
“What can you tell me about his appearance?”
“Wild red curls and warm brown eyes,” she mentioned immediately after I asked. She had a steady smile on her face while she spoke.
I could tell from her expression that she was quite interested in talking about him.
All of these could not be coincidences. The height, the appearance and the brown envelope all reminded me of Shaun. Did this mean he came into the pack just for me?
Shaun had warm brown eyes and wild red curls. He was also one hundred and ninety eight centimeters tall, and he always sent letters in brown envelopes.
“Did you not say you did not see his face?”
“Yes, but I was able to catch a glimpse of his eyes,” she cooed.
“Did he have a change of mind?” I asked my wolf, Aria.
She had not been speaking to me for some time now, and I could not be sure it was nothing to worry about. I was scared she might have gone dormant again.
Years ago, she went dormant after the twins made me leave the pack by rejecting me. My wolf going dormant was the last thing I wanted for myself at the moment.
“What can you say about his scent?”
The domestic worker must have been fed up with my numerous questions already, but she did not have a choice other than to provide answers every single time.
“What direction did he go after handing you the letter? What words did he say to you?” She had not responded to my earlier question when I rushed her with more.
“About his scent, I cannot say much because I did not pay attention to my nostrils while he was around me.”
Everyone in Shaun’s pack complimented his scent, and if she had done that too, I would have concluded that it was Shaun.
“What is going on here?” Alpha Bernard appeared.
He did not ask the maid to leave, but she left after he showed up. It had always been like that. They were not meant to stay near them because they were domestic workers.
“What are you holding?” he asked.
“None of your business,” I spat.
Thanks to him, the maid would not be able to answer the rest of my questions. I had forgotten for a moment that I was still holding the letter.
The last time I checked, Shaun did not want anything to do with me, and now he had decided to bring me a letter from his pack himself.
I thought about going after him but ended up discarding the thought. I did not know where he was at the moment, and if I decided to go after him, I might end up wandering aimlessly.
“I am not even sure it is him,” I muttered after stepping a foot into the penthouse.
“Why would he come by himself if he did not want to see me? He could have branched here, but he did not.”
A series of thoughts crossed my mind, and I had gotten myself worked up. I did not even have what it took to open the letter and read its content.
What if he wrote things that would hurt me again? The last time I received one of his letters, he had said horrible things to me.
“I suggest you open the letter when we are done having this conversation.”
I looked back and found that the speaker was Alpha Basil. A lot had been happening in the mansion, but it had not bothered me much. One example was how Alpha Bernard and Alpha Basil switched personalities.
To me, it felt as though they gave each other roles to play when I arrived at the mansion, and now they had switched again because they got bored and wanted to explore.
I was about to open the letter when he showed up. I placed it behind my back because it seemed he was here to talk about something serious.
“I found out something, and I am afraid we have a problem,” he said after taking a seat. His twin appeared the moment he sat.
“Does this have to do with what the head of security and I found out?” curiosity made me ask.
“No. What you both found out is nothing like this one. It does not have to do with the rogues,” Alpha Basil said.
I could not comprehend why Alpha Bernard decided to sit next to me minutes after sitting beside his brother. Alpha Basil used to be the one who did things like that.
“We found out that all this while, we have been targeting the wrong people. It is a big shame on us because it feels like we have failed the people,” Alpha Basil remarked. It seemed he was the spokesman for the day.
He had my attention with those words. All this while, we had been targeting the rogues if I was right. It could be that he was not talking about them, though.
I was not in support of him pausing after making such a statement, but I was not willing to tell him to continue. I did not want him thinking I loved to hear him speak.
“The witches.”
“They have been the ones tormenting the pack and its members, the witches coven.”
Alpha Bernard and Alpha Basil spoke respectively. Judging by the looks on their faces, they meant every word they said.
“How is that even possible? The rogues have been attacking us all this while, and we have been doing the same thing.”
“The only reason they have been attacking us is because we attacked them first. And we did because we thought they were responsible for the attack launched on the pack, the one that cost lives and properties, and the one that also made you return home,” Alpha Bernard explained.
All I could do was stare at their faces. I had a problem with the fact that Alpha Bernard called this pack my home, but I would not address it now.
“How did you both find out?”
“They decided to own up to what they did, so they made it clear that it was their handiwork,” Alpha Basil said.
I gulped and adjusted myself on the couch. There was a huge problem, and I did not think they were both aware. Battling the witches was nothing like battling the rogues.
The witches did not necessarily have to use strength but dark magic, and I did not think we stood a chance unless they also possessed dark magic.
I was not sure they both knew that I was going to return to where I came from. I had been on my way there already, but I returned because Gigi wanted to help me out.
This was not me being a coward, but I needed to go save my relationship. Shaun meant the entire world to me.
“You both do not need my help. I am sure you have got this,” I said.
“I do not think you know, but the witches killed your parents, not the rogues. You swore to take revenge on their killers, and that means you are waging war against the witches,” Alpha Basil said.
